  • Hi! Bunch of stuff. Went to Aus a couple times (conference, then mix of work/easter/postponed graduation ceremony \o/). Now back in Cape Town doing work here again. Also girlfriend is staying for a while here, so that's new :B

How about yourself? Gone to aus yet?
I finished the PhD. =p This is the postdoc. But I am enjoying Cape town, and made a bunch of friends as well. =)

Shame about London being grim for you. Where are you heading afterward?
Conference was fairly decent. My talk meanwhile was weird in that I had microphone issues during it, but I handled it like a boss which made my talk turn out better. So yay there!

Went home for Xmas/NY which was good but busy. Back in Cape Town for work now. It's summer here at least so not dark like your London. =p
I did! Also been on some other trips, e.g. a hike up one of the mountains here, and a trip to a wine farm.

I am, and I even have a talk. Going the following Monday for the working week. No safari options being taken around there this time though. I've got plenty of time for that. :V

Yay, Krakow! Other places sound nice too, hope you enjoy that! And shame about the wallabies. =(
It looks like Sunday is quite possible now for take two of that trip. Just gotta hope nobody gets sick again!

I don't have an official amount of annual leave, it's more up to my supervisor/s and how much work I'm doing otherwise. If I go to an overseas conference I'll certainly look at travelling either side of it, but bit early for me to do that just yet. That said may be going to Port Elizabeth (still SA) for a conference late November; to be confirmed.

At some point I want to go to a safari, so that's being kept in mind.

Innovation and strategy are vague terms there. =p

That's a tough question, both cities are great... Krakow has more of the olden architecture stuff if that matters.
Went to some royal botanical gardens the other week, which were quite nice. Was going this weekend with a few friends to a place called Cape Point, but has been postponed due to other people being sick. :< Maybe next weekend!

I need to buy some more furniture (semi-furnished, but it had all the important things sans a chair which I got), and internet is now installed after some drama (fibre!)

I see. I have never been to the UK. Commuting 4+ hours is terribad, sounds like a good idea to have moved! Good luck with the new job when you start that too, what's involved there?

Skiing sounds fun. Definitely see other places of Europe! including Poland I'm going back to Aus over Christmas to visit family.
It's nice, although there's still a bunch I am yet to see (e.g. various beaches, hiking on the mountains), and I have kept to the nicer suburbs so far. I will certainly see the surroundings, especially once I get/rent a car, and at some point do a safari somewhere. =)

Moved yesterday, now to sort out internet, some furniture and car. :V

Seems you much prefer London, haha. Why was Oxford not to your liking? (Never been to either.) What is your job like? And where are you going in Europe adventures?
    Thanks!

It's nice so far, but still early days. Moving to a longer-term flat next weekend so that will involve further set-up/shopping/etc.

    2+1 year contract.

    And what about yourself?
    Hi Lozz!

Life is different now. Quick rundown:
    - Submitted PhD late last year
    - waited an age for the reports, took about half a year (delays due to stuff like an examiner taking 3 months to withdraw)
    - did the revisions and resubmitted so I'm done with that
    - meanwhile got a postdoc job offer for astro stuff, and as of last week moved to Cape Town!
Yeah, very busy indeed. Thanks for the luck!

What's your current job/what's wrong with it?

I did; it's decent. Obviously more limited than the 3DS title (plus it's in beta - no events like halloween yet! =() but worth trying out.
Mixture of waiting to hear from a bunch and to be sending off a bunch within the next week. I have a 1st round interview for a job in the Netherlands next week, which will require a fair bit of prep (have to present a project I'd work on before the interview even starts over video con). Mix that in with the last bit of thesis and I'm hella busy, haha.

How about yourself? Also I was thinking today of messaging you on if you knew there's an Animal Crossing mobile game only Australia can access yet, so good timing! :p
It varies a lot. For astronomy usual job posting season is September-December though. I have had a couple interviews last couple months too, some unsuccessful and one pending. We'll see!

Warsaw has a good amount of stuff to see too of all sorts. Hard to go wrong there, haha. (Bulk of my family, including my parents, are/came from there.)
It'll be the choice if my first choice of academia falls through. =p And of course would still need to find a job in the field too. But I'll worry about that later if I have to!

Cool! Any particular parts of Poland in mind? There's a lot of good places to go for snow stuff in Poland (note: waaaay colder than the UK in winter, haha). Warsaw is the capital and Krakow is the other major city to check out if you like seeing old architecture and the sort.
Academia, and open to overseas but probably would still like to be in Australia. But we'll see what comes up. If not, data science sort of field.

Goodness, good luck with the move and all!
everyone's old now! harry will be up for a pint as well

I'm enjoying my summer holidays before work, going camping tomorrow. why are you moving
