Except for balancing my reviews by not being completely negative while not being completely positive, the only other thing I do is make sure my review says something specific to the story, so the author knows that I paid some attention. That's really it, and I'm sure you already mentioned that.

Yes, your comments helped, actually. I've written this whole fic without direction from a third person, and it gets terribly lonely. Having someone at last give me an opinion, whether good or bad, sets me in the right mood to correct some things and improve.
