I do love the graphical style of the ranger games. I'd say you've chosen a good image. Outside of Ranger I love the graphical style of the Mystery Dungeon games, and how most Pokemon have a portrait with expressions.
It felt annoying at times when I wanted to go fast only to slow down after a few seconds to a slightly faster speed than running. It was okay overall, and the only trick I knew was the spin. My hands would often sweat a lot so my thumb would slip off the circle pad after holding it for like 3...
I want to say HeartGold and SoulSilver since it took the base of Kanto from gen 2 but heavily expanded upon it. But there's also Black and White 1 and 2 with exploring the second half of the map and providing a decent challenge. Both are genuinely great and fun to explore.
Cycling Road for me. Only once did I go the Lavander Town route because I forgot where to get the bicycle in 1 run. I think it was really cool that Game Freak thought of 2 different routes just incase the player missed the bicycle.
I did with my first playthrough in Emerald, but on repeated playthroughs I do not collect soot. Getting the yellow flute to get rid of confusion was usually the one I ended up using the most because that is my most hated status effect. That and yellow is my favorite color.
Wes has the coolest Pokemon protag design of all time. Why would I not pick the coolest trainer? Though I'll admit I wouldn't be upset if May wins. Both Wes and May represent gen 3 so that is a win for me no matter what.
Swagger prior to the confusion status nerf. The chances of hitting yourself always seemed so high (despite being 50% before the nerf), but taking more damage because your phys. atk. has been buffed made it annoying.
Stealth rock because of how it makes so many Pokémon use the heavy-duty boots...
Gens 2 and 5. This will be a rare occurrence of me praising gen 2 but its sprites were perfect for that early iconic look of Pokémon. Not to mention that some sprites would change depending on the game you're playing. It manages to capture the watercolor look of gen 2 which I really wished came...
I think abilities are very important. As early as gen 3 pick up was one of those abilities that I just needed to have. Especially in Ruby and Sapphire where you have a higher chance getting high tier items like full restores and PP ups. Later gens would interest me with abilities like intimidate...
I played through Fire Red in Japanese once, but that was because I had already beaten that game 4 times prior. I didn't really take the time to go over text and only went by memory. The only road block for me was Blaine's gym because of the riddles being in Japanese and difficult to remember...
