    In XY, you get a roller skates early in the game. By using the Circle Pad, you automatically use roller skates, which allow you to move faster and in all directions. Some hidden locations were also only accessible by using roller skates to grind on rails.

    There are also 5 tricks you can learn throughout the game that makes riding a little bit more engaging.

    Did you enjoy the roller skates mechanic in XY? How did it compare to previous movement options like the Running Shoes or Bicycle? Would you like to see roller skates return in future titles, perhaps with some tweaks?
     
    I found them a bit difficult to control! I kept crashing into things and just struggling to get around the more windy areas. Did have some training with the Mach Bike in RSE, but I still found these difficult to work with, likely due to the 6th gen games being in 3D. If they do come back I hope they are smoother to use. 💔
     
    It felt annoying at times when I wanted to go fast only to slow down after a few seconds to a slightly faster speed than running. It was okay overall, and the only trick I knew was the spin. My hands would often sweat a lot so my thumb would slip off the circle pad after holding it for like 3 minutes. Running or using the bicycle works better for me.
     
    Preferred them as the medium distance movement option. Trusts the Bicycle for faster movement overall. Activates them smoothly without any menus, unlike the Bicycle (unless you have nothing else registered to Y). Cannot recall having many issues with them after the initial adjustment period. Will say that rail grinding can be finicky, though.
     
    I liked the skates. An upgrade from regular walking is always good, and I appreciated that they gave us a way to speed up your travel that they hadn't tried before, also to me there was something relaxing about the sweeping motions as you glided through Kalos. Another thing that was fun about the skates was being able to do tricks on them like the different flips through the air.

    If I was in a rush and trying to take as many steps as I could asap to hatch an egg, or looking to instantly get to a far away city, then I would hop on my bike, or use fly respectively, but when I was just casually exploring the game I was always on the skates.

    I would be happy to see skates come back. As for ways to improve them, I think the skating tricks could have a function on top of just looking cool, the way the arco bike worked, allowing the player to reach areas you normally couldn't by using the right moves on skates. If they really want to get fancy, give the skates hm capability. Maybe if you reach a certain speed you lift off the ground and soar, or alternatively you could get add-ons for the skates like taillow wings that active fly when they are clipped on.
