This worked in generation four, but the levels are generated differently in gen V Battle Subway. All participating pokémon will be automatically set to lv. 50, also those that are initially below. So this method is not possible in the subway.

I much preferred the rotation battles, which in my opinion offer a lot of more strategic thinking. Having all the cards laid out on the table, you need to determine which cards to play and how to allow the last half of the game to go to your favour. The whole beauty lies in exactly that...
