No spine damage that we know of; When there are serious accidents neck braces are put on for precaution I believe. As for the swelling... I wouldn't be surprised, His car (here) was upside down, while his head was in contact with the Pavement. From what I understand is that another vehicle collided with his, and well... Pavement makes for a really rough and effective sandpaper...
The long story is that he had been coming home from a concert in Grand Rapids (popular city for concerts, for most of us in SW Michigan area) and he was passing a truck in the left lane, when a Semi cut him off (Michigan State law requires Semis to stay in the right lane(slow lane) though it is always being broken by idiot truck drivers). He tried to find a soft place to crash and flipped the car on a Snowbank, and got hit by another car while he was upside down. Karma was simply on his side I guess. As for safety equipment, everything failed, His seat belt sensor was broken because it didn't lock up correctly, and It's why he was in contact with the ground in the first place; Airbags didn't even deploy, so that didn't help either.
He's doing well, seeing as he doesn't have any serious brain damage.
P.S. I only warned you because I didn't know whether or not you were the type to get squeamish around gore, better safe than sorry.
