Evie McAdams
Chapter 1-2: Kalay Crossing
"It stopped!" Evie picked up the apricorn and let her newly caught Pokémon out of it. The Pokémon lazily appeared before her, yawning widely. "Hello?" Evie said a little awkwardly. "I'm sorry but I'm not familiar with your species." The Pokémon looked up at her and blinked slowly, it seemed rather mild. "You look like a Boris to me, do you agree?" It looked at her lazily and blinked, then it plopped down on its bum, seemingly quite content.
"Okay, so far so good. Shall we go back to my aunt's house now?" She looked at Jolteon, who seemed a little reluctant. "Don't want to go back into your ball again do you?" She asked it and she could see it hit home by the way it hung its head. "Aunt Betty would probably just stuff you back in that desk drawing for who knows how long? She doesn't like Pokémon because it's now
ladylike," Evie said mockingly. "If you want, I might be able to see if I can let her take you with me?" At this the Jolteon perked up significantly. "Sounds good?" Evie asked with a laught, it was like the Pokémon had gotten renewed energy. It spent the walk cheerfully hopping ahead, sniffing trees and chasing wild Pokémon. At one point it tried to paw at a floating Petilil, who hurried away with alarm. At another point it sniffed a Larvesta and got a waft of flame to the face and yet another it chased a flock of Pidgeotto that flew away quickly. All the while Boris walked calmly beside Evie, seemingly having no trouble being caught.
"So you're okay with going on a journey with me?" She asked Boris, who looked up at her with lazy eyes. "I'm sorry for, you know, harassing you like that. You were probably just sleeping or something. But I needed a partner, so I hope you're okay with filling that role." The creature looked up and her and blinked slowly, she could almost see the hint of a smile. With that it skip towards the Jolteon to wreak havoc on Kalay's biome together. Evie just hoped they wouldn't bother any Pokémon with a larger fight than flight response.
"...Her light shall shine and the world shall be cleansed soon..."
"What was that?" Evie froze, which caused her Pokémon to do so as well. Jolteon was immediately on alert and crawled silently closer towards Evie, ready to protect her if necessary. She was his ticket out of the drawer in the crone's house, he wasn't going to let anything happen to her now. Boris followed Jolteon but he was infinitely less quiet as the fox. It seemed like every step he made rustled a plant or snapped a twig.
"Something's there," one of the voices said. Evie held her breath, she really wasn't sure whoever it was but they didn't sound like they had anything good in mind. There came the sound of someone creeping closer, Evie crouched behind a bush hoping whoever it was wouldn't see her. She was out of luck. "You! How much did you overhear?!" a woman in white demanded. To Evie's relief she didn't look Indian, more like the people of the Colthearts.
"I heard nothing!" Evie was quick to supply. "Only something about cleansing, nothing else!"
"What is it?" Another woman's voice came from the bushes.
"Some girl here that has been listening to our conversation," The first supplied. "She heard about the cleansing."
"No really, I didn't hear anything," Evie said quickly. She didn't much care who these strange people were, she just wanted to get back to Kalay.
"No matter, if she heard about the cleansing, then good for her," the second woman supplied, who now came from the bushes. She looked very much like the first, only about ten years older. "She'll know what's coming to her!"
"Jolteon…" Evie stepped back creating a space between her and the two women that was quickly filled by the Pokémon. Boris came too, clumsy as he was.
"Ah, a battle first then? You spoil us," the first woman laughed, then got out her apricorn.
"Don't mind if we do," the second one said, and they both released their Pokémon: a Pidgeotto and a strange Pokémon who resembled a humanoid child somewhat.
Evie gulped, she'd never even seen a double battle before, let alone done one. But it had to be like a normal battle right? Then again, she wasn't exactly an expert on those either. "Ehm, Jolteon, shock the strange one, Boris, what can you do?" There were no words to how much of an amateur she felt right now.
"Kirlia, dodge it, then use magical leaf," the first woman said. The second asked her Pidgeotto to create a gust. Jolteon did as asked, shooting a strong electrical beam at Kirlia- who seemed to disappear completely before reappearing somewhere else, shooting out strange-coloured leaves. Meanwhile Boris shot a sort of seed at Pidgeotto, but the bird flapped its powerful wings and the wind blew the seed away as well as pushed Boris back quite a few feet. Jolteon was able to avoid the wind's main path but Boris was straight in the middle of it. It was a good thing he was so heavy or he'd be blown straight off his feet. The good thing of the gust was that it was poorly coordinated with the other Pokémon's attack, it blew the strange leaves off their paths which had otherwise been straight at both Boris and Jolteon.
"Okay, Jolteon, try to shock the Kirlia" (as she now knew its name) "Again, Boris, wait until it teleports somewhere and then use your seed attack again," Evie ordered. As predicted the Kirlia teleported away right as the electric beam was supposed to hit it, but Boris was prepared and fired his own attack. The little seed sprouted thin vines as soon as it came close to Kirlia and they all latched themselves onto it. It glowed green while Kirlia grimaced and at the same time Boris' cuts from the former battle started to heal. "Ah, so her health goes to you!" Evie proclaimed in a eureka moment.
In Evie's happiness that her move had worked she'd completely forgotten about Pidgeotto, which had just gotten its orders to use a quick attack at Boris. The bird dug its beak into Boris' side who cried out in pain. At the same moment some more health was leeches from Kirlia, but it was by far not enough to repair the damage the Pidgeotto had done. Meanwhile Kirlia had shot its magical leaves at Jolteon causing another ring of pain. Evie was having the hardest time keeping her head with it, every time something happened to Boris she'd pay attention to him only to forget about Jolteon, who'd then get hurt.
"Come on Evie, focus," she told herself. "Okay guys, switch opponents!" She yelled across the make-shift battle field. 'Boris, use that vine-thing you used earlier against Jolteon, try to grab the Kirlia! Jolteon, use that electric tackle as soon as the Pidgeotto gets low to the ground, and it will!"
"Give up girl," the second woman called out from across the path which they were using to battle on. "The power of our lady will see to our assured victory, struggling is futile and will only prolong your destiny! We
will cleanse you1"
The thought of it gave Evie the creeps, she decidedly did NOT like the word cleanse. Boris had run towards the Kirlia, two vines poking from the flower on his back just waiting to wrap around Kirlia. Every time he got close, however, the thing would teleport away again. It let out some strange attack that lifted Boris right off his feet and hurled him into the bushes. "Boris!" Evie called out, the bushes rustled, indicating that her Pokémon was still up and running, and Kirlia's vine was already sapping away another helping to its health. Evie's attention got pulled back from Boris and to Jolteon, who'd been caught in a gust and got slammed hard against a tree trunk. This plan wasn't working either. Kirlia didn't need to be close to attack and whenever Boris did she'd run off again. Same went for the Pidgeotto, he could do away with Jolteon from a distance, no need to risk getting hurt himself. But Pidgeotto couldn't teleport.
"Jolteon, shock the bird!" Evie instructed. "It can't get away! Boris, as soon as Jolteon's shocked it I want you to slam it towards the ground with your vines!" Next try: teaming up on one and dealing with the other when they got to it. This did mean that Kirlia could attack unhindered, but they just had to face that. Jolteon send a thundershock at the bird who couldn't dodge. It started twitching as its body received the shock and couldn't stay in the air, which was something Evie hadn't anticipated. Good thing Boris could improvise, he latched on to one of the bird's wings and pulled it towards the tree, giving it a good slam. "Jolteon, finish it with another shock!" Evie called out. Jolteon was just about to when Kirlia did its strange attack again and lifted Jolteon off its feet. It wasn't about to be hindered that easily though, it was still able to generate his electricity and as Kirlia shot it through the air it hit the Pidgeotto who cried out one last time before slumping against the tree.
"Yes! That was one!" Evie cheered happily. Then she got an idea, one she should have thought of before. She'd noticed, while watching the Kirlia teleport around, that it had a range of teleporting, it could do so for farther than about three meters. "Jolteon, go stand on the other side of the path and go charge your electricity!" Evie instructed and Jolteon, although confused about its trainer's methods, did as asked and moved. "Now Boris, I want to you to use your sleeping powder right there and walk towards Jolteon, keep spreading the powder." The plan was such, one that was basically just herding. You herded livestock by making sure they had no other way to go then the one you wanted them to go in. Teleporting towards Boris would result in falling asleep instantly, it could only go towards Jolteon, who would be read. It worked, the Kirlia couldn't go anywhere else. "Now Jolteon, electric-tackle it!" Jolteon jumped forwards just as the Kirlia materialized from a teleport. The air cackled from the release of Jolteon's build-up and both Pokémon ended up rolling over the floor from the impact. Boris, without orders, reached out to pick up the Kirlia and brought it close to himself. He then sprayed it full in the face with his sleep powder and tossed it into the bushes.
The two women were flustered, they couldn't believe they'd lost the match. The second one recovered the quickest. "I suppose our lady must have further plans for you. We cannot cleanse you just yet, but rest assured, it shall happen." With that both retreated into the thicker forest and Evie had no desire to stop them. She moved over to Jolteon, who lay on his side breathing heavily. "Oh I'm sorry buddy, I didn't mean for you to get so hurt. I have to put you back in your apricorn now, aunt Betty will know what to do."
---
"I cannot believe you were so irresponsible!" Evie's aunt snapped at her. "That Pokémon is my property, was my husband's property, you have stepped over your bounds! Not only that, but the dress I have so kindly allowed you to borrow is dirty and tattered beyond repair! And you look nowhere like a lady, you look more like a savage!"
Evie hung her head, taking it all. She wouldn't have if she didn't have the intention of taking Jolteon with her, but she knew that if she had any hope of that she would have to swallow this with well timed "yes, aunt" and "of course aunt".
"And now you tell me that you got Makin hurt too?!"
"Makin?" Evie asked despite herself.
"The Jolteon you stole! You didn't even have the decency to ask for his name!"
"Aunt, if I may-"
"You may certainly not. I want no more word from you!" Aunt Bettysnapped.
"Betty," Annie stepped in. "Let her talk."
"There's a race, I heard about it in Kalay this afternoon," Evie said very quickly, afraid that if she talked too slowly she'd be cut off again. "The price is money, a lot of money! I could start a ranch of my own! I could accomplish my dreams!"
"A young lady's dreams are to be wed to a proper gentleman," Aunt Betty interceded, but she stopped when she got a look from Annie.
"Mine aren't," Evie said stubbornly. "My dreams are to have my own ranch, to get to work there every day, tending the livestock and making a living and a name for myself. Those are my dreams. And I don't care if they're not ladylike. I don't care if I never wed a proper gentleman or never have children or never have to wear a dress again in my life. And I don't care that those dreams aren't supposed to be mine, because they are and that won't be changed. And if this race is a means for me to achieve those, then I shall participate. And I shall win." She jutted her chin out with that and stood as straight and proud as she could.
Annie stepped beside her daughter, putting a hand on her shoulder. "You've been very kind to house us Betty, and I know that this agitates you. But I've been living with this thing for nineteen years and I know that there's nothing you can do once she's got her sights set on something." She smiled at her adoptive daughter. "And I wouldn't have it any other way."
Betty sighed very deeply and very dramatically. "Alright, she's
your daughter after all, and
your responsibility. It won't be on me if she's the disgrace of the family."
'Ehm, aunt?" Evie asked nervously.
"Yes?" Her tone made it very clear that she was wary of whatever Evie had to say, so Evie reverted back to the quick speech.
"When I took Makin out of his ball he seemed so much happier, and he's a very good battler. So I was wondering, would it be okay if I took him with me? You never do anything with him and he only sits in the desk drawer and-"
"Stop talking girl or you'll faint. Yes, you may keep him. I've been thinking of selling him anyway, I just couldn't. At least this way he remains in the family. Follow me, I'll give you some berries to give him. And then I want to show you something."
---
About half an hour later Evie was sitting on her aunt's bed, leafing through and old note-book. She loved the feeling of the old thing paper and the crackling sound it made when you turned the pages. It had belonged to her late uncle, had been started by the father of his father and contributed to by both the other men in the line. It was a book about Pokémon in small diary-form. Each evolution-tree that they had found was documented by a small ink drawing of the Pokémon and information about it as well as what attacks it might have and in some cases what it might eat or how it might behave. The Pokémon the writers had owned were written about in huge detail, including Jolteon, while the ones they had only seen or heard about, such as Ivysaur (as she now knew its species was), had only been documented as much as they knew about it.
Her aunt had given it to her, still in the stand-offish way of hers, saying that it was no use to her anyway and it would be a good thing in her husband's memory to have it be of use to someone. It was heavy, but it fit just about neatly in one of Evie's pouches that hung about her belt and it was useful enough to carry the burden of its weight.
She had also changed clothes as soon as she could. She was now back into her comfortable cowboy gear, the simple blouse and airy skirts together with her familiar pouches, her knife and her lasso. And her hat, which had previously been absolutely banned by her aunt. She was now ready to go, and in time too as it was starting to become evening. She desperately missed a mount now, one with which she could canter straight into Kalay instead of having to walk. She was just going to have to hope she'd meet a Ponyta or Rapidash along the way to carry her. Now she had to make do with Makin an Boris as her escort, which was hardly 'making do' at all.
"Come on guys, let's get ourselves a race."
