I think it's a little too soon for me to call it one way or the other...it's better than Deep Space Nine, I know that much. But then, anything is better than that. First impressions are that it'll probably be one of those sci-fi shows I kinda enjoy, and it could be better than Enterprise at least, but it won't come close to touching The Next Generation or Voyager.
Kinda funny to see people comparing Saru to Jar-Jar Binks. I found his neuroticism more amusing than irritating.
I'm watching episode 3 right now. So far it's very well done, but hardly feels like the Star Trek I am used to. A bit more like Battlestar Galactica meets Aliens.
Seeing the third episode now makes me feel like this will be a good series. They've already done a lot of good character stuff, showing how different people react to Michael: Saru is afraid of her, the new captain wants to use her for her skills, her new roommate sort of wants to be friends, and lots of people hate her.
I like the mystery they're adding, the sinister element of the mission that Discovery is on.
Even though this third episode (and the series in general) feels pretty dark, we got ~science~ and ~technobabble~ and the beginnings of people starting to work together to solve problems. Good, core elements to a good Star Trek series. I was sort of on the fence at first, but I've got pretty high hopes for this series now.
