Hack Name: Pokémon Red/Blue - Gen. II Graphics Patch

Hack of: Pokémon Red and Pokémon Blue

Pokémon Red/Blue - Gen. II Graphics Repository

The readme pretty much says it all:
Code:
---------------------------------------------------------------
Pokémon Red - Gen. II GFX&Music Patch
Version 2.0
By: Danny-E 33
---------------------------------------------------------------

Intro:
======

This hack includes several graphical improvements over the
original game to give it the quality of a Gen. II game. It
also includes all songs from GSC. There is nothing new
about the storyline. It is for the purpose of getting to play
through the game again with a little more aesthetic appeal.
It is also highly intended to be a base ROM for anyone to
create a hack of this Gen. I game. With the major overhauls
added into this hack, anyone who wants to create their own
hack of Pokémon Red can use this base ROM and have a game that
is beautiful.

For all the custom assembly for this hack, please see:
https://github.com/dannye/pokered-gen-II/compare/pokered...music

No one needs to ask me up front to use this for their hack,
but you MUST give credit to me for the base ROM when your
hack is announced.

Features:
=========

-Customizable sprite banks
-All sprites from GSC
-Individualized sprite palettes (Pokémon and trainers!)
-Gen. II style 6x6 back sprites
-Several palette corrections (The Pokéball tile is always red.
Oak intro in full color!)
-Updated font, and other tiles, to match Gen. II
-Inserted the graphics for the GSC battle HUD
-The "Pokémon owned" Pokéball tile in wild battles
-Fully functional in-battle experience bar!
-All songs GSC!

Version History:

Replaced OW palettes with GSC's Kanto OW palettes (Super
Gameboy mode)
Fixed Leaders' sprites in the Trainer Card
Added three songs from GSC, Trainer Battle, Wild Battle,
Leader Battle (thanks to FroggestSpirit)
-----------------------------------------------------------------
06-17-2013: V1.2 - Repointed the palette table to an empty
bank and expanded the table to include a palette for every
single Pokémon and trainer sprite
Corrected several Pokémons' sprite and palette data so that

-----------------------------------------------------------------
03-03-2014: V1.4 - Restored SGB Border
Added a fully functional experience bar to the battle HUD
-----------------------------------------------------------------
03-05-2014: V1.5 - Fixed an exp bar bug that occurs when the
player uses Transform
-----------------------------------------------------------------
01-30-2015: V2.0 - Fixed the player back sprite in the Hall
Of Fame Room
Ported Crystal's sound engine and all Crystal music

It should be noted that this is not related to my personal hack, Pokémon Prototype (although it includes many of the same features).
Any opinion/preference in Prototype, such as choosing a few sprites from other games, is not put into this hack. Every sprite came directly from GSC, with the exception of a few trainer sprites that did not exist in Gen. II. Those sprites are credited accordingly.
If you find any bugs, please let me know. Also, feel free to give any advice or feedback.

Well that's sort of true. KBM's Brown uses 6x6 backsprites, but that is the only feature that I included that is also in Brown.
Brown has a few additional palettes added for the Pokemon, but this hack includes enough palettes for all Pokemon and trainers.
This hack includes several things in full color, like the Pokeballs in a battle, the PC box list, the Pokedex, or the Oak intro.
Even though his hack included 6x6 back sprites, most of the front sprites still came from Gen I which I do not think look appealing, although I understand why he had to do that, because those were the only sprites that worked with the original palettes, since he did not add enough palettes for all Pokemon.
Also, every single sprite in Brown has the bottom right tile missing. Something that takes away from the visual appeal. I'm pleased to say my hack's sprites work wonderfully.
So it's not exactly like an improved version of the graphics side of Brown. It's just different.
And I'm not trying to bash on Brown at all. It is amazing and it is the most creative, exciting hack I've ever played. It is what got me interested in hacking, and it was my inspiration to create something like this.

This sounds pretty cool! I'm giving it a try right away.
Thanks alot! Let me know what you think of it, please!

It's pretty nice! Gen 1's retarded backsprites always bothered me (& a few front sprites too) :D Ever since Koolboyman fixed this issue in Brown I was hoping someone would do the same for RBY while sticking to the original gameplay. Job well done man!

I'm assuming this patch would also work on Blue.

It hasn't been tested, but I would imagine I've only modified code that is the same between each of the games.

It sounds great, actually. But, most of the Pokémon Sprites in Red suck, so I would advise resizing and devamping some of the newer generation sprites... xD. Then this would be the best Red patch. Or have you already done that...? Anyway, continue this hack, I think its gonna be great!

There are 355 sprites in the original Red game. I have replaced 350 of them with either improved sprites. Have you ever played Red before? Perhaps you don't know what the original game looks like to compare it to my hack:

And there's no continuing this hack! It's done!

This looks awesome :D
Thanks!
It's like DS graphics on a GBA game ^^
Actually it's Gen II GBC graphics in a Gen I GBC game.

Looks great!

Now if only there was a way to edit the "Red Version" part, then the revamp would be as great as it can get.

I'm guessing hex editing might work, but I know nothing about that stuff. Even the idea of that gives me a headache!

(My intended hack wants to be called Scarlet instead of Red Version)

Danny-E 33 made this version as a rom base for others to use. The most likely reason that title screen graphics isn't edited is not because it would have been difficult but the fact that would make it harder to use this patch with other red hacks, especially if those involved some kind of editing to the title screen already.

Other than that, I have said it him already but this is a nice hack already on its own.
