  • PokéCommunity Daily: ROM Hacks/Fan Games Article Submissions

Want to feature a game you like (or even make) beyond this forum section? What about sharing your tips on using a tool, or worldbuilding? We've set up this thread for you to get involved and showcase such things on PokéCommunity Daily.

    Guidelines
Any fangame or ROM Hack, or related aspect to that, can be written about on PC Daily. You are allowed to write about a game or tool that you have created. That said, all articles must be distinct from the thread made by the original creater. We do not want to merely copy and paste what is already used - instead, something substantially different needs to be offered. This can be an interview, a summary of a playthrough, a review of the game (by someone else), a guide on how to get through the game or some tips about playing it, detailed notes on development, and so forth. Make it something interesting to read for others! We'll also consider listicles (e.g. Top 5 PMD fan games and ROM hacks), according to one writer or via community vote. We also won't have consecutive articles on the same subject, to ensure some variety. Multiple articles on a single game is fine - just not all at once.

To pitch an article, please post in this thread, with a brief summary on the article idea, who will write it, and anticipated length, alongside any other details. As with most Daily articles, two Daily staffers (or one Daily staffer and one RH/FG staffer) needs to approve the idea via a post or like on the pitch post. After writing the draft, the article then needs to be proofread by two Daily staffers before being published. Optionally we can also create a Daily account for you to use and draft within our WordPress site. We can also help with any or all aspects of putting the article on Daily, if you want to draft it somewhere else such as Google Docs.

Want to be interviewed about your work for an article? Make a request and we'll arrange something.

Here's an idea I'd like to pitch. Throughout various fan hacking communities, including this one, I tend to see various copyright questions come up repeatedly: Is rom hacking illegal? Will I avoid a C&D if I do <X> ? Doesn't Fair-Use protect me? Etc, etc. As someone who actually has to work with IP lawyers on a semi-regular basis, these questions tend to reveal a grand misunderstanding of copyright law and how it's applied.

So here's what I'm thinking. I'd like to write a Q&A article that addresses a lot of these questions as they pertain to rom hacks and fan games. I'd like to take questions from staffers, but also non-staff community members as well (like in the discord or a separate forum post). I'll then consolidate all the repeat/related questions down into about 5 to 10 questions (depending on how much response I get). Then I'll write detailed responses to each of them based on the latest U.S. case law and current understanding of U.S. copyright doctrines.

Note that I specify U.S. law, but the existence of numerous international treaties means that this will apply to nearly every country in the western world.

This is meant to be a very frank and informative piece that should hopefully prove useful to my fellow Fan Game Hub denizens.

Hi there! That's a pretty cool idea, and I reckon it would be of interest to many here.

Would these questions be submitted by members in a separate thread, and maybe also allowed on the Discord server's channel for fan games? The latter might be a bit harder to track, but a good chuck of the PC community are on that as well.

I could swing both simultaneously. On discord, I can make a post and people can @ me with their responses.

EDIT: Forum thread for questions here.

I love this! Will look forward to the final. :)

In the meantime, can you please PM me a desired username and email to use to make you a Daily account with? So you can write your article on the WP site we have, as well as have you displayed as the article's author.

Hey Theanimemaster, I have a game I've been working on that is currently trending. 65 downloads so far! It's a boss gauntlet game like the Elite 4 but with a lot more people and you get to make whatever team you want.
Based on a group of people that play games for charity but a lot of people outside of that community have been enjoying the game and find it super fun regardless!
Here is the link if you want to play!

Took me a few months to make and has improved my skills as a game artist and designer.
