No, I mean like the BW difficulty system, where you get the different keys (Easy Mode, Challenge Mode, Black Forest/White City)

Oh.
Well, in very basic terms those are elaborated setflags that make use of an interface formed by tilemaps and animated sprites like the Pokémon Summary Screen for example, so you'd have to come up with something similar code-wise, I'd imagine.
Maybe someone else can give you a more thorough explanation.
