What we named our Rivals

I have no idea what a Wonder Trade even is, but I remember being shocked when I booted up Diamond and was asked to name my rival, as I had only played Emerald before then. I was like "who is this guy, Professor Birch wasn't dumb enough to not know May's name!". I think I definitely called him Sam for some reason, and Barry a few times.

Buying LeafGreen I think I called the rival Gary because of the anime. In HeartGold I called Silver "Murtaugh" after the Eragon character because it felt somehow fitting (also because I planned to have a Dragonite "Glaedr" to go with my traded in Salamence "Saphira" - owner "Eragon").

Once I started reading Pokémon Adventures however, I've generally started naming both my player and the rivals after their manga counterparts, so Barry = Pearl and Silver = Silver. Kinda jars when you can't rename Dawn or May (Wally stays the same in the manga) or the rivals in Gen V - so I tend to be more likely to name my character in Black or Emerald after myself, or some other name like the aforementioned "Eragon".

In Black 2 I believe i just stuck with the name Hugh as I had kinda drifted away from pokémon somewhat for a couple of years after Black's release.

  • I was really unoriginal with my rival names, I would always either name them their name in the anime (e.g. Blue as Gary) or just my cousin's name Ryan who I played a lot of Pokemon with as a kid.

  • Wonder Trade is something that came in gen 6 where you trade a pokemon to a random dude and get a random Pokemon.

My first rival was in soul silver and I named him Bob just because I was stupid (Not the name I was just stupid back then)

  • When I first started playing the Pokemon games years ago, I tended to name my rival random things. That all changed when I started naming my character Mando (or Mandolore). Since that time, I tend to name the rival a name that previously used for a Pokemon nickname (the rule about not reusing names only applies to my Pokemon teams). The said name being Revan.

  • i dont think I actually ever named my rivals anything insulting, unlike most kids i guess. I just named most of them after my best friend at the time.

  • I tried to use Santiago but I think I decided on Zack/Zakaria in most pokemon games due to character limits.

That's like my go-to name for a rival-like character in any game or RP that I am in.
