Companionship

  • We've all played a game where we've unwillingly had a companion (or even worse, a group of 'em) thrust upon us to "help" with whatever goddamn situation you're in at the time. In my experience, 99% of the time they are an absolute liability. They get in your way, steal resources, untract unwanted attention and the like. So...what are your views on it? Any favourite companions or absolute miserable stories you want to share?

My Rainbow 6 Siege team, it's like a pack of idiots running around doing nothing and can't aim at all

I'm not better either tbh, I can aim but I am as braindead as it can be

only game where they've ever really been a problem for me is skyrim. They alert enemies, trigger pressure plates, etc.
And if you have to follow someone? They walk at a snails pace :(

The only other games I can think of where you have a companion, they benefit you.

  • The best companion in any game ever. And that's just V2! They're very slowly working on V3 (Possibly?)

Most vanilla Skyrim followers suck. Turning off essential and Unrelenting Forcing them off a cliff never gets old.

Usually in Pokemon I wouldn't mind Gen IV type companions, but recently in Renegade Platinum, I was trying to get a Murkow in Eterna Forest but Cheryl wouldn't stop KOing it. God that was annoying. I wanted it early so it would get some EXP gains but had to wait till I escorted her out.

I don't think I've ever had an actively, extremely helpful companion, but I enjoy the company anyway, haha. Usually helps if they are entertaining. So in Skyrim, Cicero was my favourite follower. He couldn't die, so that wasn't bad but I just thought he was funny.

Voice in Victor Vran is, sadly, the best example I can think of when it comes to companions that I don't want to strangle, throw out a window, or otherwise mutilate in horrible fashion. All he does is offer ridiculously snarky and sarcastic comments, and it makes a very average Diablo-esque game quite entertaining at points. If you run away from battle too much he sings a song about how brave you are for running away. Pick up a weapon and he'll occasionally comment on it. He has something to say about pretty much anything, and most of what he has to say is so phenomenally trivial and unhelpful that it's actually quite funny. Too bad he isn't in a better game, really...although if he was he probably wouldn't be as amusing, because he KNOWS how utterly rubbish the whole thing is and takes a perverse sort of delight in it.

The Watcher in Darksiders III falls into a similar category, although her banter with Fury isn't as frequent as I would like. She also gets bonus points for being a companion that you actually get to kill.

Otherwise...yeah, no. It might be dangerous to go alone, but I'll take my chances. Death is preferable to someone trying to help you not die.
