Which protagonist do you usually choose in order to have a rival of a boy or girl? Which rival would you usually have mirror to your choice?

I am making a Fan Game, but I wonder which one of the protagonists would you choose? The Boy or the Girl? What gender of a rival would you want to mirror your character, the male rival or the female rival?

I always choose the character that represents my own gender. I prefer my rival to be of the opposite sex personally. Those characters have a rather interesting look, by the way. Their clothes are super baggy like it's the 90s and the guy's hair is wild. lol
