Get it? Cause Johto is west of Kanto?

First a disclaimer: I'm totally fine with glitching and consider it to be one of the best features of these early generation games. There are significantly less glitches in GSC than in RBY, but I'll be doing them and writing about them here, and provide resources as I go along, in case you're interested in learning more about them.

HYPE! These are, by far, my favourite Pokemon games. Playing Blue was fun, but I was much more into the anime at that time. Gold & Silver are the versions I fell in love with. I played the everloving heck out of them, and they are largely responsible for me joining this website (shout out to zel). Ever since the announcement of RBY in 2016, I've been itching to play these games on VC.

Let's dive right in. I'm not taking any particular nuzlocking approach. I really like the "only use first mon you encounter on any given route" limit (with the duplicate clause). Everything else is fair game. They can faint I don't care, they're still my babies and I will revive them over and over.

And with that, Pokemon trainer ALEX set off on his adventure. Well, not quite. I set off three times, in fact. Due to a tear in the space-time continuum, I chose all three starters, one after the other, opting to choose Cyndaquil last. I've done the famous duplication glitch but instead of saving right in front of the PC, I saved right before choosing my starter. This meant that, while executing this glitch, I would reset the game to choose another starter, and have my previous starter waiting for me in the Pokemon box in Cherrygrove. :) Rinse & repeat, and I've got all three mons before even getting the Pokedex. Neat!

As a side note: I love how much my "New Friend Online!" light is blinking. Really shows how many people were hyped for these titles. :)

Now back to the way the game was meant to be played. I ran into a dude named ??? and promptly changed his identity to REYES by speaking to a police officer. How that makes any logical sense is beyond me. Time to become the champion. But first I need to task my mother with saving my money. That'll give her something to do at home. Alone. Every day.

That's it for now, then. The team is Cyndaquil (Lv. 8). Catch you next time!

Violet City: A path through rose-tinted glasses

Well that makes it sound like I'm not having fun. I am, I promise. It's the first pun that came to mind.

I spoke to an old man whose design makes it look like he has a really long and pointy nose. Pretty sure it's supposed to be a beard. He showed me around Cherrygrove (which, by the way, you can see the whole place by standing in the centre and pivoting) and gave me a map card for my Poke Gear and left. OK, thanks Pinnochio.

Before going too far out I decided to catch myself a Hoothoot and name him HOOTER, after my favourite restaurant chain. I need him to buff up a bit so he can help me on my journey. I'm forcing him to fight many of his own kind (he must really hate me) but that'll all be forgiven when he's a majestic Noctowl.

OK, HOOTER is level 7. Let's start fighting these trainers. I swear, these guys are so immobile, they should be hired as royal guards for the Queen. HOOTER has his first grown up battle against a level 4 Rattata and wins handily. Very cool. :sunglasses:

I'm almost at Violet City but.... let's take a detour into Dark Cave. It was really dark but also really cool. I first found & caught a Zubat. But the real prize here is my lucky Dunsparce! I recently read that's a 1% drop rate. HOOTER's must be my lucky charm. After debating what to nickname my little feather-eared land snake, I decided on DUNSPARCE. Brilliant.

The team is pretty weak, but Cyndaquil had no problems carrying us to Violet City unscathed. Time to save and get ready for the next adventure.

Safely in Violet City, the team is: Cyndaquil (Lv. 10), HOOTER (Lv. 8) and Dunsparce (Lv. 4).

Sprout Tower, Falkner and Union Cave

My first order of business in this town was to trade this poor sap a Bellsprout for an Onix. Never has a better trade been offered to me. This kid is so lazy. The route east of here is infested with Bellsprout. Thanks for the Lv. 3 ROCKY. Real original nickname, by the way.

Second order of business was chase REYES into Sprout Tower and stop him from making a fool of himself. I caught a female Gastly named CALVIN on the second floor of the tower and swept the rest of the bellsprout trainers with her. She levels up so quickly. CALVIN and I will be long-time friends, I can feel it.

I finally caught up to REYES only to discover he beat the poor, old, lead monk as if he had something to prove. Pitiful. I then also beat up the lead monk and left with HM05.

Well I suppose it's time to beat Falkner. ROCKY hadn't got any experience out of Sprout Tower, so I trained him up to Lv. 5 and tested his luck against the Flying-type gym. It was very easy. He swept each of Falkner's underlings and also managed to faint Falkner's pidgey. Pidgeotto was stronger, so I swapped in Cyndaquil to finish the battle. And just like that, I had earned my first gym badge. Fantastic.

After a quick stop at Dark Cave and the Ruins of Alph, I set off on the next route.

I really love this route because it has Mareep and leads to Union Cave, which is one of my favourite caves in the series. Can't wait to come back here with surf. I did some training with CALVIN and ROCKY and Cyndaquil. Caught a Mareep, though I don't plan on using it this time around (for now, anyway). I took the old man's old rod, which he seemed strangely happy about, and set out into Union Cave.

Union Cave was a lot of fun, although my team is noticeably weak to rock types. I had a hilarious battle between CALVIN and Onix, wherein Onix constantly screeched as CALVIN licked him to death. The battle proved so fierce, it motivated Cyndaquil to evolve.

I almost got full wiped outside of Union Cave to the climber's Lv. 11 Geodude. My mons were all fainted after knocking Geodude down to 1/4 health, I sent out Quilava at 1HP, gave him two potions and he clutched the rest of the battle. Close call, but we hit the Pokemon Centre and healed up, ready to take on Team Rocket.

Team in Azalea: CALVIN (Lv. 14), Quilava (Lv. 15), ROCKY (Lv. 10), HOOTER (Lv. 12), EGG

Azalea Town, Whitney and the Sexy Miltank

Right, so Kurt, being the old bonehead he is, broke his back trying to save the Slowpoke. Literally. And he didn't even save the slowpoke. Have no fear old man, I'm here and I love slowpoke. I cleared out the thugs like it was 2000 and head into Azalea gym to face my next challenge.

BUGSY won't bug me. I mean, really. Who uses a Metapod and Kakuna in their lineup? BUGSY does. She also loses to me. Every time. Thanks for the badge kid, and congrats on discovering Fury Cutter.

Before heading into Ilex Forest, REYES wanted to talk to me about how he hates weak Pokemon and Pokemon trainers. He must be struggling in his skin because I kicked his ass. Well, full disclosure: his Croconaw made me break a sweat, but I came out on top.

I herded a Farfetch'd, earned CUT, caught an Oddish who subsequently became the cut slave, passed by the Protector's Shrine and cleared the following route. Hello, Goldenrod!

I took a nostalgic trip around the city and into the Underground. The Egg hatched during this walk, and I named the Togepi MISTY. Maybe I should give Professor Elm a call... Ah, it can wait. First, Whitney!

I stepped into Whitney's gym and struggled a bit to clear her underlings, and decided it'd be best to have all my mons up to level 18 before fighting Whitney herself.

Then came the fight. One that has always been remembered as unexpectedly difficult. ROCKY and I were determined to beat her on the first try. Whitney lead with Clefairy of course, who landed two insanely good Metronome hits: Leech Seed and Water Gun. WTF? Is Metronome always this good??? ROCKY managed to kill Clefairy but was super weak. I swapped in Oddish for when Miltank came out, Super Potion'd ROCKY and let Oddish faint to Stomp. I swapped ROCKY back in and tried to land a Screech. No dice. Miltank used Attract. They say you learn a bit about your Pokemon in each battle you take, and I learned ROCKY has an irrational lust for cows. I mean, it's cool, ROCKY, no judgement. But when I'm trying to win a battle, and you are immobilized by love for 6 straight turns, it's not so cool. It's pretty f'ing annoying, actually, and it got you fainted. Queue HOOTER, with the clutch Hypnosis, that kept Miltank asleep until he could peck it to death.

Phew. Whitney down. She's also crying. What the heck? Do I console her? Is this normal for a gym leader? I want my gym badge, damn it.

Shameless rip-off of Ammako's formatting. Pls do not kill. Its very nice.

Kind of a quick update here before i keep playing my save. It was Sunday, so no Bug Catching Contest for me. :( I knew CALVIN would have lots of fun taking on the Morty gym, so I mainly focused on levelling him up, while getting HOOTER to evolve. I fought my way into Ecruteak city, visited the Kimono Girls and beat their beautiful eeveelution lineup. Kinda makes me want an Espeon or Umbreon, myself.

REYES was in Burned Tower and wanted to fight me again. When will he ever learn? Maybe after this one he'll recognize my superiority. I did some exploring down there and got close to the Legendary Dogs, but not close enough. They were unphased by my presence.

As expected, CALVIN had a field day in Morty's gym. He grew so much! He eevolved into Haunter just in time to kick Morty's butt. ezpz

My team is really suffering to rock and water types. I need to add some new mons. Now that I have Surf, I'm gonna go back around Union Cave/Ruins of Alph and do some exploring. Maybe I'll catch a Wooper. :) I also plan on buying Gold on my 2DS and evolving Haunter ASAP.

    Until next time!

    The Olivine/Cianwood Saga

Hoo boy, lots to catch up on here. I'll give you the short version.

As I mentioned in my last post, I backtracked to Union Cave, caught a Wooper named TOOTIE, and did the Ho-Oh and Aerodactyl Ruins of Alph puzzles. I explored Mt. Mortar (until realizing you need Waterfall to grab Tyrogue), cleared the routes to Olivine City, the Lighthouse and Cianwood. I focused on training HOOTER and Quilava in this stretch to take on Chuck and Jasmine. Neither battle was too difficult. Even at level 31, Quilava was able to take down Jasmine's Steelix.

By this point I thought, shouldn't I have released the legendary trio by now? Well, d'uh! I never picked up Rock Smash! So that's my next goal. And I'll also backtrack and pick up Fly. See you guys in the next one.

    Lake of Rage Saga

    Double-whammy tonight!

Last entry kinda sucked. :( Want to make this one better to make up for it.

Like I mentioned last one, I meant to go awaken the Legendary Dogs, which is exactly what I did. So that was fun. I also backtracked and picked up Fly for my own sanity. :) HOOTER is filling into his role quite nicely as a strong, tactical flying-type and transport owl.

Well, I'd already cleared the trainers on-route to Mahogany Town, so after sight-seeing, and noticing that there are NPC barriers everywhere except north (and west), I figured maybe I should head north. And I got got by Team Rocket! Feels Bad Man. They took $1000. And I just let them have it. Kinda annoying, but I guess I'll just go around through the grass next time.

After beating some trainers who apparently had no clue there were Larger Matters at hand, I made it up to Lake of Rage! And what a place to be. Everybody's freaking out over the Gyarados overpopulation. And there's one particularly angry one - their leader, I guess - in the middle of the lake causing a big raucous. I better catch it so I can have it be the life of the party in the PC. I also plan to trade it over to Gen 1 and teach it Mimic - it will come quite in handy.

I met Lance, the most badass dude in Pokemon (after Red), and we decided to go check out what that Mahogany item shop is all about. Its had a weird vibe since I got there.

Turns out it leads underground to some weird hideout/generator area. These boneheads are way out of their league cause I cleared the place like it was nothing. They're packing Lv.16 Rattatas and I've got my stacked team of Lv.30+. cmonBruh. I eventually gathered enough passwords to meet the heads of the operation, some Rocket Executives, who were still no match for TOOTIE, Quilava, or anyone else I chose to run. I finally beat enough of them that they run away in fear, leaving their generator vulnerable to shutting down. All it took was to faint 6 electrode and the generator shut off. Permanently. Lance and I saved the day.

Well, Quilava's Lv.34. I coooould go out and grind him up to 36 and get Typhlosion... oorrrr I could test my luck at Pryce's gym.

Turns out it was the perfect plan, because Quilava reached Lv.36 just as I finished beating on Pryce's last underling. Hello, Typhlosion! Let's go beat up Pryce.

I was packing a trusty Thunderpunch TM to teach Typhlosion for this exact scenario, and that proved to be the key to winning this battle without breaking a sweat. Seal and Dewgong barely stood a chance, while Piloswine's defense helped him endure Flame Wheel once, only to get hyper potion'd and one-shot by Flame Wheel the second time. GG Pryce, you're gettin a little too old for this game now m8

And as if I hadn't already saved the entire town of Mahogany and surrounding area, AND beat their proud leader Pryce, ELM calls right as I leave the gym. Give me a break, dude. He mentions something about Team Rocket over at the Goldenrod Radio Tower. Doesn't he know I JUST disbanded Team Rocket?

I opt to teach my Sudowoodo TM48 Thief (thank u Rocket hideout) and try to steal myself a Metal Coat off of Magnemite. This was a long and arduous process, as wild Magnemite tend to flee. I never gave up, even encountering Entei and Raikou for the very first time on the same route (unfortunately they both fled immediately), I finally got myself a metal coat! Very excited to evolve my ROCKY and start training him again. He's been totally neglected lately. I even boxed him so that I could carry around Eevee to build its happiness. :( Speaking of which, I should check on that...

Oh well, THE TEAM! in Ecruteak City:
    <table cellpadding="5"><tr align="center"><td><img src="https://serebii.net/pokearth/sprites/silver/095.png" /></td<td><img src="https://serebii.net/pokearth/sprites/silver/093.png" /></td<td><img src="https://serebii.net/pokearth/sprites/silver/157.png" /></td<td><img src="https://serebii.net/pokearth/sprites/silver/164.png" /></td><td><img src="https://serebii.net/pokearth/sprites/silver/195.png"</tr><tr align="center"><td>ROCKY? Travelling Though Time and Space

Through the wonderful advent of technology, I was able to trade Gengar and Onix to Gold version on my 2DS. We've got some fully-evolved 'mons on our hands! Steelix is a total beast. And it's really easy to grind him up due to the exp boost since he was originally traded from an NPC. Gengar is also really strong, and I'm considering trading him to my Yellow version to teach him Psychic so he can sweep Bruno at the E4.

But, back to the story... I wanted to check Eevee's happiness, but the Happiness Lady's house was blocked off by the Rocket goons. Ugh. Why are they always in the way. Fiiiine I guess I'll clear them out of the Radio Tower. But they better learn this time, and disband for real. This will be the third time I break up their antics.

The goons kept boasting about holding the Director hostage up on the 5th floor. It became obvious that my task was to rescue him. And when I finally knocked enough of them out to reach him, it was an impostor! Wtf? He fought me - and he was actually pretty strong - but I managed to beat him with Steelix and Typhlosion. He told me the director is being held in the basement, and gave me the key. OK thanks I guess u want me to foil ur plans lol

On my way to the basement, none other than REYES decides to show up. Do I have to disband you, too? Once again he asks me to prove my superiority and I do. He shows no sign of clueing into reality afterwards. There's no hope for you, REYES.

Back to important matters. I found the director and he's OK. He gave me the card key to go find the people messing with the transmissions. I got there and met the one who seemed to be in charge - he was packing some cool mons like Houndoom. It was a challenge, but the team came out on top.

I saved the day! The director came upstairs to thank me with a Silver Wing. A whole wing. Geez. Do you collect Piloswine tusks, too? Suddenly I doubt you were worth saving, Mr. Director.

Apparently this wing summons Lugia. I'd like to go catch him, but Ultra Balls are only sold in Blackthorn City. But, I've got nothing stopping me from heading there, so I will!

    Soon.

First, I decided to travel my Gyarados through time, to a land where he would fit in with his peers as a common, blue Gyarados. In the past, another player named "GF" taught him Mimic, went out to find a Ditto and traded the Ditto back to me. It was blue! How weird is that? First Gyarados, now Ditto. Maybe there's a bunch of Pokemon with odd discolouration?

    Until next time...

    A Theory, Confirmed

So, I had a theory to test. Gyarados and Ditto can't be the only pokemon to coincidentally have discolouration, there must be more... so I bred my blue Ditto with a Pokemon caught in the wild. I bred and bred and after about 25 eggs, I got this!

    Spoiler:

Again - don't believe in coincidences - there must be tons of Pokemon with possible discolouration! I wonder if anyone knows about this? This is huge!!!

So of course you can imagine I had to start training this Zubat up. I wonder how Golbat and Crobat look? Golbat kind of had this funny green shade about him (like Zubat), but Crobat is pink! Like super pink. It's hilarious. He's not intimidating at all. I named him ADELADE, and he's the best.

For this all to happen, I decided to take a pit stop at the Whirlpool Islands, which are pretty annoying to navigate. I grinded up ADELADE's levels all through here until I finally found Lugia, and realized that my movepool was not well equipped to deal with Safeguard, Recover and Aeroblast... I decided I'd come back with a Master Ball. Which means, I'm off to fight Claire.

Finally at Claire's gym, ADELADE evolved into Crobat. And I am sure glad he did! TOOTIE was able to Ice Punch all three of Claire's Dragonairs down, but Kingdra was another story. TOOTIE was fairly weak so I swapped her out for Typhlosion's Thunderpunch, which managed to paralyze Kingdra, but was not effective enough to counter Surf. Typhlosion fainted unfortunately, and I tried CALVIN's luck. He got Kingdra down to red health, and Claire used a hyper potion. Sadface. Kingdra was able to KO CALVIN, but not before CALVIN got him down to orange health. Cue, ADELADE! Combo'ing Confuse Ray, Fly and Bite was enough to take the paralyzed Kingdra down.

I did it!!! I got all eight badges!!!! Err... hold on. What's a Dragon Fang? Why is this necessary? Why are you such a sore loser, Claire?

She told me to find a Dragon Fang in Dragon's Den, and then I earn the badge. Wtf? ok. Dragon's Den is super cool, it's got such an eerie and mystic atmosphere. And finding the Dragon Fang was pretty easy. I feel like this was just an excuse to teach one of my mons whirlpool... Why was this necessary again Claire? What have I proven that wasn't already painfully obvious while battling you?

I quickly grabbed that badge. Finally!! I have all eight!! WOOO!!!

As soon as I exited the Dragon's Den, I got a call from ELM. Sure, I'll come by! I was planning on visiting home now, anyway, since I'm so close.

ELM greets me and gives me a Master Ball. It can catch anything without fail? Cool! Let's go get Lugia.

Knowing the exact route to get to the mythical beast, I quickly make my way there. The beast and I lock eyes. It's on.

    Master ball ur mine teehee.

That was fun. Also, due to a glitch in the PC, I was able to duplicate my master ball. How freakin cool is that. I need to catch the Legendary Dogs next.

HOOTER had been struggling, so I decided it'd be best to swap him out for ADELADE. You will be missed, HOOTER.

Until next time... THE TEAM in New Bark Town:

    Hello everyone,

It has been a trying time. A time of patience. A time of mistakes and of learning.

For the past few days I have been training Tyrogue. First I trained a Hitmontop, whose move pool is so lackluster, I should've never bothered. I trained him to Lv.31 before giving up.

I then decided to train a Hitmonchan. However, I got the stat values wrong and accidentally evolved a Hitmonlee (which drained my funds and savings buying Protein). This was very frustrating but I decided I would swallow my pride and train another Tyrogue.

After clearing the routes east of New Bark Town and Victory Road, as well as fighting REYES and winning, I can take on the Elite Four. Hitmonchan is level 40, and so is most of the team. Let's do this!

    The Elite Four

GUESS WHO'S LEAGUE CHAMPION? Me! And the team! We did it!

It was quite the saga. Will was arguably the toughest battle, which had me worried since I was using so many healing items right off the bat. I didn't have anything super effective on Psychic, so I had to rely on Typhlosion. He took out the Xatus and Slowbro with Thunderpunch, and Flame Wheeled Jynx and Exeggutor.

Next was Koga. Quite a simple battle really that Typhlosion was able to clear with ease.

Then came Bruno. His Hitmontop's Detect was annoying, as it was too easy to use against ADELADE's Fly. But thankfully Detect only has 5 PP in Gen 2 and I was able to out-Fly his Detect and one-shot him. ADELADE took care of most of the other Fighters, except for Machamp which I got ROCKY's help on. TOOTIE made quick work of the Onix, and we were off to face the next challenge.

Karen the dark-type user, traditionally the boss I struggle the most with, was quite easy this time around. I had an answer for every one of her mon's secondary type. Hitmanchan took care of Umbreon and various other mons took care of the rest. CALVIN made his one and only appearance in this battle, against Karen's Gengar, which he quickly one-shot with Shadow Ball.

Ah, finally! The real challenge. My good friend Lance. With my mons all healed up, and Hitmonchan in the first slot, we were off.

Thunderpunch took down Lance's Gyarados fairly quickly. It also used Rain Dance which gave TOOTIE an advantage against the following Aerodactyl. Then came the three Dragonites. TOOTIE was ready with Ice Punch, and punch Dragonite she did. She even took a couple of hyper beams (with the help of hyper potions) and next thing I knew, the third Dragonite was down for the count. All that was left was Charizard, who was no match for Surf. Boom! Done! Champions! Props to Typhlosion and TOOTIE for being the true MVPs of this challenge.

Whew, I wasn't sure how it would play out. I was worried I'd have to bring the team up a few more levels. Lance took me to record my Hall of Famers. What an accomplishment. This past week has been nuts!

Hello everyone! I'm not dead I swear.

I've been slowing down my pace since getting to Kanto. When I was a kid, learning that there was the entire region of Kanto to explore made me absolutely ecstatic, and it was part of why I loved the games so much. Lately, though, Kanto hasn't been too enticing. Probably because I've played it so many times, and GSC's version of Kanto is very bare. Nonetheless, I'm still playing it, but very slowly.

I've spent most of my time deciding who to replace CALVIN with, which will be Houndoom. But I thought I'd try to hatch a shiny Houndour, since Zubat only took about ~25 eggs. Not so lucky this time, but I did hatch one after 107 eggs.

I've beat Lt. Surge and Sabrina so far, planning to go do the Power Plant mission next.
