[Poetry] Ode to the Third World: The Unfought [Monster Hunter]

Welcome, dear readers, to my first published work in the Monster Hunter fandom. As a sort of contrib originally for the Monster Hunter Club, I started writing poems in the style of Rise's intro poems for monsters, but specifically for the monsters from Third Gen that did not make it in (up to the 2.0 Update). The poems are being condensed at Archive of Our Own as a release site.

This is a work in progress and will be for a while, and the poems are not necessarily in the order the monsters have in the games but rather, largely, in the order I'm finishing them plus their tier. The only exception - specifically for PokéCommunity - is the in-progress Amatsu poem I'm working on, which will be later posted as a premiere.

This post contains a "Village Hub" style index of poems, some of which will be added directly to this thread, so as to aid in navigation.

Of your defeat and ruination

The skies adorning with clouds

Tribute her overreaching flood
Revolution of land maternal

Take refuge in contemplation
Of her season-breaking howls

Survive her and cultivate the grounds
Of blooming forests and valleys fraternal

Ocean of sands under the sun's light
Islands built on bones and crags
Creatures try to stay out of sight

This artefact of a submerged time
Fumes and stakes from its vast hideouts
For the targets of its next crime

One word from the prey does suffice
The vast maw emerges to take one bite
And a piece of the world pays the price

In the world of the wild, where predation is law
This beast wanders, irate and insatiable
Refusing no meat, no fish, no tail and no paw

If its visit is the luck for your meadow to draw
Flee, remember it while yet lush and living

TEACHER OF THE HUNTING INSTINCT

This dog of war awakens to a new day
To stamp his foot on nature's balance book
His children bark and bite eager already
To improve investments their elder once took

He saunters forth to lead his pack
On the journey where the currency is life
He endures their ludic distractions
As instruction for the times of strife

He marches his pack into the valleys
With a howl he calls off their recess
He beckons the children to form up
Their turn to become hunters, more or less

At his growl the pack charges on
Hopping and crying, their childish play a decoy
Their greedy bites distracting their prey
That his charge and bite may secure their ploy

ALLOTER OF CRAWLING DEATHS

A strange entity looms in the shadows, not of black but white
The warmth that others hoard as life, betrays them to its sight

It hangs above and around, breathing down on your neck
But with interests more filial than turning your day to wreck

Rather than gobble you whole it would spit you a noxious ordeal
And leave through tunnels and caverns in search of a happy meal

A hunter for its spawn, of method stealthy and crude
Yet parent nurturing and devoted to its bloodsucking brood

THE MOSSY MOUNTAIN

In the lucid dream of the Peaks
Even mountains seem to wander
Like the giants of lore, such freaks

Would your mind conceive of such beasts in the morass?
Spinning high in the air even with such mass?
Pummelling lesser beasts while munching on tender grass?

So if you catch their eyes amidst the green and brown
Of your leisurely illusion you better wake up
Or into harsh reality they'll hammer you down

FINALITY IN THE CURRENTS

In the dark and tumultuous rivers
Obscured herbs can put your hunger to rest

Another hungry creature nearby slithers
To put your patience and fitness to the test

Forage upon the wrong growths in the stream
And be introduced to the patron of this murky seat

Suffer the piercing spikes, the stunning gleam
But still, down you go whole, your failure complete

THUNDEROUS RULER OF THE SEA

To walk the ethereal path for survival
In the vast realm of blue under blue
Round up the packs, main the masts
For the shocking chaos soon to ensue

For in this endless war theater
In nature's wide open moat
The savage conqueror roams freely
Lighting up invaders both deep and afloat

Here comes the roar and the whip
That cracks and cackles at beasts and ships
The deadly edict of the seas' master
Heeding no surrender of whoever he grips

For your ivory tower he'll shed no tear
Into abyssal depths he'll raise your fear
And when he's done all shall disappear
But your last wish to never have left pier

WANDERING DETONATOR

When the mountain comes crashing in with chin up and stony brow
The goals of its enemies will face down an explosive row

Through fiery pits it gives chase, always the stones for a fight
With tremors, sweeps and gasses, not to mention dreaded Fireblight

On its rocky hide crits bounce, while its own detonations abound
So exploit its own strategy, bombs in tonne and a pound
