US blames North Korea for WannaCry ransomware attack

If y'all remember the huge WannaCry ransomware attack that affected hospitals and other medical organizations worldwide earlier this year, then this story will seem familiar. This attack was so bad that it caused Microsoft to issue patches for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 (both of which have been out of complete support since 2014 and 2015, respectively!).

It seems that the United States has decided to pinpoint the source of the attack onto North Korea, months after the UK had already speculated it was them. Why is this just now coming out, month after the attack from the US? Who knows.

EDIT: Since I've posted this thread, the article has been updated to state that Australia, Canada, and New Zealand also suspect North Korea being the source of the attack as well.

One possible reason for this is if they had pinpointed the attackers very quickly, and released that information right away, it would tell the attackers that they need to completely change their tactics, since it didn't take much to trace it back to them. By releasing it much later on, it instead can look like it took a lot of time and effort to analyze that attack, which means if the attackers believe that, they may use the exact same tactics next time, or only change them slightly. That way, The US and others would have an easier time analyzing the same kind of attack.

Just some speculative opinion, but it seems like a valid possibility.
