Pokémon Black 2/White 2

Returning to the Unova region two years after the original events of Pokémon Black and White, things have changed. The gyms have new leaders, N has vanished, and the weather is acting strange throughout the region. There are still many similarities though: team Plasma is still as strong as ever and the world still needs your help! It is now your job to defeat Team Plasma, collect all of the badges and conquer the Unova region. Many think of Black/White 2 as an add on to its predecessor but it is far more.

There are many nuances in Black/White 2, one of them being that many of the Pokémon from the other regions have migrated to Unova. It's a nice change to see grimer as well as a sewaddle in the wild. The mix of Pokémon makes the game seem more realistic. As well as seeing a larger variety of Pokémon in the shrubs and lakes around you, trainers have a larger variety of Pokémon as well. There are more trainers to verse in the game, and the gyms are more intense than ever.


While battling through these gyms are still the main target of the game, the designs of the gyms are more elaborate and more thought out. From crashing through Roxie the rocker chick's gym to charging through Elesa's electrifying runway, the gyms are more fun and difficult to advance through this time around. Unfortunately though, there are only eight gyms and after that the Elite Four. Players can play the game again in Challenge Mode after they have beaten the game. This makes the gyms leaders twice as hard and the Elite four even harder.

Enjoy battling? Then Pokémon Black/White 2 is the perfect game for you! Additional opportunities to test your team and flex your skills include the Pokémon World Tournament, a new in-game event where you can face off against gym leaders and champions from past titles. The inclusion of a constantly running tourney is a brilliant addition as it allows players to never get bored while refining their skills.

Not a fan of battling? This time around Pokémon Black/White 2 offers a multitude of other activities for a finely balanced experience. A plethora of other activities such as Join Avenue and Pokéstar Studios have been added. Join Avenue allows players to hang out with your friends, after thy have been registered over wireless communications. In Join Avenue players can open up shops. There are eight different types of shops to open: Raffle Shops, Beauty Salons, Dojos, Markets, Flower Shops, Antique Shops, Cafés, and Nurseries. Souvenirs are earned as players visit your shops. This way, players can gain more rare items to help them throughout their quest. There is also Pokéstar Studios! In here, players can make short movies with your favorite Pokémon. There are three different types of endings: Good Endings, Bad Endings, and Strange Endings. Each time a player makes achievements in a film, they will unlock fans. The more films you make, the more fans you have!


The Dream World now has a larger role with the use of the Entralink. With the Entralink, players can catch Pokémon met in the Dream World, as well as pick up Dream World items called "Dream Remnants". Besides finding new Pokémon with Dream World abilities, there is not much else to do in the Entralink. The Entralink provides players with short games called Fun Fest missions. These are missions consisting of 3-10 minutes where players can participate in games such as finding treasures in a cave to talking to all of the clowns in a city. The Entralink is a fun feature, but there needs to be more implemented in the system. Besides catching Pokémon, there really is not too much to do.

One of my favorite features of the game is the creation of medals! There are over 200 different medals, and they can be earned in many different ways. By dressing your Pokémon a different way, to defeating a certain number of trainers these covetous medals make a nice piece to your collection. The colors of the medals and the symbols are unique. An additional reward for players who beat Black/White 2 is the unique Memory Link system. In the Memory Link players will be able to see flashbacks of Unova's past. You will be able to see N during his time in team Plasma and some of the things that have happened between Black/White and Black/White 2. After defeating the game, N's Pokemon, such as zorua, will be available to find in the wild. Players will also be able to verse Bianca and Cheren numerous more times.


Pokémon Black/White 2 has the same 2D graphics of its predecessors. The game looks the same as Black/White. The graphics are slightly refined and has much color like its predecessor. Many had wished the game to be completely in 3D, but there are small 3D aspects throughout the game. A few of the towns such as Nimbasa and Driftveil have expanded in size. There are also new places to visit such as Black City (for players with Black 2), White Forest (for players with White 2) and the entralink. You can also pay a visit to N at his castle once you defeat the elite Four. The music throughout the game goes well with the mood; it has been revamped a little since Black/White but is still similar. Each Pokémon has a unique sound. The battle music is intense, especially when challenging prominent opponents such as Ghetsis or the Elite Four.

Pokémon Black/White 2 follows the traditional Pokémon game with great new features GameFreak offered new features such as a Challenge Mode, Pokémon Battle Tournament and the Entralink to create difference from Black/White. With a new story and more to accomplish, Pokémon Black/White 2 is more than an add on- it is a true sequel.
