Hey guys, I'm new here as of today. Used to be a big Pokemon fan years ago and then decided it was time to "grow up." Well after seeing the 20th anniversary commercial all the nostalgia rushed back and I've decided to screw "growing up" and get back to my childhood gaming roots lol. The last Pokemon gave I played was Platinum and didn't really even play that one too much, the last one I really committed myself to was Diamond version. So I haven't played any games SS/HG and later, but I played a game in each series prior to that. Can anyone recommend a good strategy for getting back into playing Pokemon and reintroducing myself to it? Like what versions I should play to catch up and which ones I can skip or even if I should skip any, I just need help with a strategy because I've missed a lot of games.

I'd really appreciate it! Thanks in advance!

I'd recommend starting with generation five games if you still have your DS. If you don't, I wouldn't say it's a big deal, as they could still be played via emulators. After them, hopefully, you should be all caught up with our current generation--gen six!

I think it's worth a try! You're never too old for Pokémon. :)
I agree. One of the greatest and happiest revelations I've discovered upon becoming an adult is that I don't have to put down the things that brought me such joy as a kid, because it continues to make me happy as an adult, and even makes me feel like a kid again ^^ And even more, is that it continues to get bigger and better throughout the years, as does my passion and enjoyment for it :)

Well... I'd say OmegaRuby and/or AlphaSapphire could be the best games to help you ease into it. While they are remakes of games you have probably already played, they are also the most evolved in terms of gameplay mechanics. Also, being modern reinterpretations of the story you already know, they should be great at showcasing the progress and the changes that happened to the series since you stopped playing.

I would still advise you to at least try Generation 5. Especially Black 1 and White 1, they are very different from the rest of the series, and, if this forum is any indication, the main story is rather divisive, but IMHO worth trying, just to see whether you like it or not.

EDIT: and, yeah, I don't think there is such thing as "too old for Pokémon". I got back into it when I was... what, 24 or 25?

Finally, I can make use of this gif, oh thank Mew.
    Spoiler:

Why not revisit your Pokeroots? If you began from Gen I (Red/Blue/Yellow), then lucky you! They are going to be re-release for the 3DS again! You know what's good about these re-releases? You can trade and battle without those nasty trade cables like back in the ol' days. And since they are release under the 3DS, save file disappearing (due to internal battery being unusable) isn't likely to happen!

Gather your friends and family for #Pokemon20, enjoy and celebrate the biggest moment of our franchise!

Sorry for sounding like a pushy salesman, just trying to relate to you as a person who began from Gen I games, haha. ;)

Although people are saying to go with gen V or VI, it might be worth it to look into HGSS, since you missed out on them an IMO are the best games 4th Gen has to offer. Gen V has very few mechanical changes outside of the two new battle types(Triple Battles which are mostly in Black and Black 2, and Rotation Battles which are mostly in White and White 2), so it might be worth looking into them before hopping into Gen VI. Also BW1 have the most in-depth story of the series, and makes it so you can only use 5th Gen Pokemon before the post-game to make the game feel unique, while BW2 have one of the best Post-games in the franchise with features like Pokestar Studios(Featuring what are currently the only fightable opponents that are not Pokemon so far in the series) and the Pokemon World Tournament (Battle all the different gym leaders and champions from gens I-V)

I'd probably start with either RBY, HGSS, or ORAS. To me, I'd be more inspired to get back into Pokémon by revisiting something familiar rather than diving head first into something new. HGSS and ORAS would especially be good since they're technically still new games for you, even though they're remakes of older games you've played before.
