Game Help: Unable to tell if my game is fake

I bought a japanese pokemon black and the game showed up with no previous save file and does not work on my 3ds. i can connect to wifi and download mystery gifts, but am unsure whether it is legit or not. does anyone know whether either of these things can prove it is fake or legit? i only want to use it to transfer pokemon from previous generations to my pokemon y, so it would be a shame to beat a game in a foreign language and realize i wasted my time. thanks :)

thanks for the link, after some research i found that japanese 5th gen games are region locked on anything DSi and above, but can still be used in pokemon bank. looks like my game is legit :)
