When I posted this on reddit, a user there said I should also post it here, so... here it is!

Pokémon Fool's Gold is a Pokémon Crystal ROM hack where everything is familiar, yet different...

We've been working on this as a side project since about January 26, 2019. I know it's not super impressive compared to a lot of the amazing projects shared here, but as Pokémon fans who don't really have programming experience but grew up playing Pokémon ROM hacks we wanted to have fun and make one together, and we're really proud of the end result!

In this game, all of the Pokémon have been reworked... think Alolan/Galarian forms, for all the Pokémon. All 251 Pokémon are available in-game without trading. We've reworked all of the trainers and wild encounters to fit as well. In addition, there have been a few visual tweaks, and we've added a few new places to explore, too!

The story is all the same as vanilla Pokémon Crystal, so the experience is similar, but with the new Pokémon designs.

Here's the trailer: youtu.be/4UBiwAW_Ut8
And if you have any questions or just want to check it out, the code for our discord server is xMA9Udq.

FEATURES
  • All 251 Pokémon redesigned, with new types and movesets to fit
  • All wild encounter data changed, to better fit the new designs to the environments
  • All Pokémon available without trading, including trade evolutions and starters
  • A variety of aesthetic changes to the overworld
  • A few new optional areas to explore
  • Shiny rate raised to 1/1028... we wanted everyone to at least run into one shiny throughout their playthrough
  • A few new moves, both from other Pokémon games and original moves

I'm truly surprised that nobody has commented on this! I just applied my patch and started playing! I picked the Ice type cyndaquil. I love how you've given each Pokémon a brand new design while making them still feel familiar! It would be really dope if a patch with the running shoes or a difficultly increase could be released to spice things up! Congrats on the release!
Finally dropped my mixtape Venting session vol. 2! This mixtape is deeply personal to me as the 4 tracks touch up on themes such as Mental health, parental upbringing etc. Do consider tuning in!

This game looks dope! The sprites look really well done and the overworld changes are a plus as well. I really think this is a perfect idea for a hack that doesn't have a new region or story but a familiar one we've all played through. This slight twist alone is going to make the game all that much enjoyable for me and others I hope. Definitely playing through it. Great job.

P.S - This might be the game I complete my Pokedex in.

Starting to play yesterday, I enjoyed it GG

I really liked the idea, although not every new designs convicted me.

But there's a thing that I did not enjoyed, a really huge problem that could mine the experience
You did very well with the Typing, the evos and the new moveset..... except for the TM/HMs...

A few Examples: why a Shellder who is not not a water Type could still learn Surf, while Drowzee not although is a Water type in this game?

For now it's 7/10, Hope that you could fix this problem

I'm really loving this ROM hack. I can tell that this was made with love and care. I'm a big fan of differently typed Pokemon. So I'm all about rediscovering these Pokemon with their new sprites/types. It's like playing the game again for the first time. I love that feeling!

I've only made it up to the Day Care, but all the Pokemon designs I've seen so far are quality sprite work. Pidgey is a favorite of mine just because their stickman legs make me smile every time I see them. I hope I can find a Rattata... I've wanted one since I saw the tutorial trainer catch one. I'll definitely be putting my time in to Catch 'Em All on this one!

My compliments to everyone associated with this hack. This makes me happy. Thanks for this!

Hey, sorry, I don't really use Pokecommunity so I haven't been diligent about checking here. So to respond to some of the feedback...

To Danidark97, who asked about TMs and HMs, we have fixed these up for a near future update. (There's just one big bug to get out of the way and then it'll be up.)

To aicaimze, who asked about the new tiles, some of them are from scratch but most of them are adapted from either the Gen 3 games or the Spaceworld 97 demo.

To Gbcplayer, who asked how to catch Mew... You will know where to go once you enter Kanto for the first time. Bring Mewtwo. ;)

To Persondynamo2222, who asked if the evolutions are the same or not, some of them are the same and some are not. Trade evos have been removed. Here's a Google spreadsheet with information: docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1TphQvTjq8t77EKZAcPRRxdg91Q0UlFoBObdq2RM11GE/edit?usp=sharing (Check the page labeled "Evo Methods")

To SevenChurches, who asked about Revelation crashing, this is a known bug that has been fixed for 1.1 (bug fix update)

To PorygonDebugger... thank you <3

To Sanmyth, who asked about base stat changes... There have been a few minimal changes. Mostly not special/physical stuff. However, the physical/special split has been implemented for the 1.1 update and we are planning to rework some of the movesets to account for this.

Thanks for all the feedback!

I absolutely enjoying my playthrough currently! Although I do want to ask if I'll be able to catch a fire type anytime soon? I'm already 4 badges in and I'm yet to come across a fire type. Thanks!

You can get Corsola right at the start on route 46. With 1.1 it's not as rare anymore.
I forgot tk mention that I did catch a crosola, but is it really any good? I'm assuming the base stats haven't been altered too much.

You can see all locations, movesets and the altered stats (not many were altered) in the google doc that was posted some posts above. So yes, Corsola isn't that great. There aren't many fire types in Johto it seems, but you can trade an Abra for Tyrogue in goldenrod dept store.
Spoiler:
Also some Kanto starters are fire typed, you should explore the new location Tumbleweed Town for that, if you're strong enough. I'm not strong enough yet, so I haven't found them, and I hope this info is correct.

Ayee so i explored the newly added areas around Johto and i absolutely loved them! Out of curiosity, are there any newly added areas in Kanto? I'm not very close to finishing Johto yet, so i thought I'd ask.

To Inner Rhymes... Fire type is definitely one of the more sparse types in Johto. As others have mentioned, Corsola is available on Route 46, and two of the Kanto starters, available in Tumbleweed Town, are Fire type. Apart from those, you can hatch Cleffa from the Odd Egg if you're lucky; Scyther is a 1% chance on Route 33; Dunsparce is in Mt. Mortar (1% chance but becomes more common as you move farther in); Growlithe is on Route 44 (extremely common at night, and you can also catch Arcanine in Victory Road). There are also a few ways to get Tyrogue (from Kiyo in Mt. Mortar or by trading for Abra in Goldenrod, or by breeding Hitmontop from Route 49) which you can evolve into Hitmonchan with a Fire Stone.

Additionally, there are no new areas in Kanto yet but that's definitely on the list for the future. For the upcoming update 1.2 we are adding new moves, overhauling movesets and base stats, and adding in some more new locations, including the areas from HGSS west of Cianwood.

With 1.2 I finally beat the e4 (not really saying "finished it" before I am done with Kanto). I'll put most of this behind a spoiler tag, since not everyone wants to see the new designs.

Spoiler:

After waiting for 1.2 to drop and planning my team in advance - with some ideas I read on discord - I grabbed it as soon as it was out. I caught a Pidgey for sprout tower and went to get my first MVP - Bellsprout. I then nabbed a Cubone, leveled it until it learned headbutt and shook all trees until I found one that spawned Scyther and Yanma. So. Much. Experience. I might have gone a bit overboard with leveling, because when I entered sprout tower I was level 22 with STAB bonus against weakness. Those Bellspouts did not have a good day.

Bellsprout line coverage is no joke (electro, water, fire, ice, steel, poison), and Spark being replaced with Thunderbolt in 1.2 is super op but fun. Bellsprout was level 25 when I went against Falkner and the levelcurve didn't catch up to me until Cinnabar. I pretty much ate Bugsy for breakfast as well.

I reset the Odd Egg until I got Tyrogue and evolved it to Hitmonlee instantly. Honestly, those two alone would have carried my whole game, between great physical and special coverage. There are a lot of steel, dark and fly types, so fight and ice is really good. Nevertheless I took the Eevee and evolved it to Flareon after it learned Baton Pass as well. It wasn't too useful in the end, didn't even learn its signature move before I fought the e4 and was left to mostly use Bite against some psychic types. But it's a purple Dragon, I need it. Need!

Chuck gave me some trouble, since Victreebel has a fight weakness and Hitmonlee has pitiful defense. I actually had to grind a bit to beat him, but the rest of the leaders fell easily. Before moving on to Blackthorn, I tried to get a lucky egg, but gave up when my team was almost level 50.

My last team member was Suicune, which I spent too much time on resetting for shiny, just to get one with horrible stats. Not that it matters much, it's still Suicune and one of my favorite designs of this hack. It wasn't too useful; Confusion is pretty weak, even with STAB, and Victreebel and Hitmonlee already knew ice and water attacks. It'll get Psychic in the postgame, though. And yes, I play fully like back in the day, offensive moves all the way :p

For what's probably my favorite design I had no room: Gligar. I had kinda hoped it would be able to be my Fly mon (well, it has wings, alright) but it wasn't, and between needing all 4 HMs on Krabby and a mon that can learn Fly, Gligar didn't stand a chance. Sorry, lil guy :( Once I am done with Whirlpool, I will make room for one. Gligar is one of those things I'd put on my desk IRL and pat it occasionally on the small little (plastic) stone head.
I mean, look at this cutie:

Honorable mentions to Ledian, which carried my first run on 1.0/1.1 (didn't reach HoF) and is also a great design. Other mons I really liked were Sandslash, Horsea line, Arcanine, Corsola, Stantler and Teddiursa. All of the designs are all pretty great, but some I just fell in love with.

Shiny odds are increased, so I found a shiny Diglett on my first run, and a shiny Yanma on my second run, in addition to some I reset for, like Eevee and Suicune. Shiny palettes are really nice, too.

I loved the attention to detail; changed card game in the game corner, changed lighthouse mon, the eeveelutions. Some of the new palettes are awesome, the area around Blackthorn, the mornings, the colorful touches on cities. Having Cherrygrove City with pink trees is so good. Some of those colors I want to rip straight out and take with me into every crystal hack ever.

A real pain was HM management. Gen2 has just too many (And other field moves! Ugh.) and it's so hard to plan a team and figure out who can learn what without being able to look up info. Especially with water HMs being seemingly random, with a bunch of mons being able to learn Surf, but not Whirlpool and/or Waterfall (this has always been the case in core games as well, and it has always annoyed me. It's not like being able to learn Whirlpool gives that great advantage in battle). Wanted to use Bellossom; nope, no Whirlpool. Wanted to use Voltorb; nope, no Fly. It took me forever to figure out that Krabby still can learn Surf, Whirlpool, Cut, Rock Smash and Strength (but no Flash, he), from which moment on it singlehandedly carried almost all my HM needs.

The only thing that makes me seriously paranoid is the lack of a move relearner. The game is so great, but later gens and other hacks spoiled me a bit in that I am really stressed out about having one wrong click possibly ruin a mon on level 50 by forgetting an attack it can't get back, and for which there is no TM. That's pretty much the only quality of life improvement I still desperately wish for.

All in all - thank you guys for this awesome hack.
