Hi there, I'm new to the competitive Pokémon scene. Anyone have any tips in how to get started? Should I breed and build a team around one Pokémon or should they all compliment each other? What is the thought process going into single vs doubles?

If you search around you can find sample teams that are made for the purpose for giving you something to start with, so you can just hop into battle without spending time building a team that might not be any good anyway. It's not something that you have to do though.

One of the key things when it comes to team building is to prepare for the common threats in whichever metagame you're playing in. If your team can't handle what you're going to see often, your battles are going to go about as well as a trip into the desert without an ample supply of water. As you get more experience you'll naturally just catch on and remember what's meta, but another thing that helps is to look at usage data. Two sources of that would these: https://www.smogon.com/stats/ https://www.pikalytics.com/

Before you go putting two mons into the Day Care, I would highly recommend doing some reading first. Since you're new to the competitive scene you should at the very least learn the basics and lingo -walls, tanks, sweepers, hazers and phazers, etc. - before diving in. Just to piggyback on what Nah mentioned, here are a couple other resources to check out: https://pvpoke.com/ and https://pokemonforever.com/teambuilder.php.

I would like to draw your attention to the article written by PolymersUp titled Ultimate Team Building Guide on https://pvpoke.com/. PolymersUp goes over some basic terms such as cores which is the backbone of any great team build. Hope this helps and good luck!
