Well actually he don't
When he beats Ganondorf/Ganon and has rescued the princess. They talk and Link returns back in time, while the whole hyrule is partying. He returns seven years back in time. And then not even princess zelda could know what the future would bring. I think the end is a bit sad. I wanted so much that Link should stay in that time, but he returned to his childhood

Oh :/ But Ganondorf was still alive then...

Yeah, but remember that Link saved the future, so the same things wont happen again :) So he saved Hyrule as the legend spoke of ^^
