Has anyone found that every 1st Gym besides Johto has had Rock type as a primary type is rather repetetive and boring?

My opinion is yes. I'd really like the first Pokemon Gym to be Electric or even a Dark type.

It seems they tried to make it fair for the Fire-starter by allowing it to evolve at lvl 14 and gain "Mach Punch"

I choose not to pick a fire type just because of that.

And what was up with them giving you Pikachu and then expecting you to go against Brock that early in the game? Bull.

But I don't mind it. The fires are usually not my faves anyways.

unfair to the water types? Like how rock is unfair to the fire types?

I would have thought that normal would be a kinda obvious choice for the first gym, seeing as none of the starters has an advantage.

Normal is one of the most formidable types in the game @_@
It has the most utility moves and then there's that crazy Tauros with Return...
    And Fake Out Ambipom :O

Electric-type at low levels would basically have Thundershock and Tackle. A Geodude could solo the entire gym :/

I personally like the "tradition" of having the first gym be rock type. Besides, its not that hard to just use more than your starter pokemon. It's a revolutionary and unheard of theory, I know, but it just might work.

Mr. Person is right, in Red, Blue, and Yellow, you evolve Caterpie to Butterfree and use Confusion. Skipping Johto, in Hoenn, you can get a Lotad or Seedot very early on, both having an advantage. In Sinnoh...help me out on this one, I haven't played that part for a while now.

For Kanto there's also Mankey and both Nidoran's, Hoenn there's Wingull and Shroomish and Sinnoh has Psyduck and Machop.

I don't really see what's unfair with that. You could just go choose the starter with a type that's the gym leader's pokemon's weakness.
You could also capture other pokemon along the way or you could train your pokemon to about 5 to 10 levels higher than the gym leader's pokemon.
