It really comes down to what pokemon you want. Like there are certain pokemon to each version, for instance you can only get, Palkia on pearl and Dialga on diamond. There are many other pokemon you should look at here is a linkhttps://www.serebii.net/diamondpearl/exclusives.shtml

I'm going to get Pearl when it comes out because it only has misdreavious and spheal on the exclusive list.

And for the starter go for the one you like.
like me i'm going for pochama because it's so cute, so just go for the one that suits you the best.
