The Monotype Challenge:
Rules:
~You play through either Gold, Silver or Crystal using pokemon of only one type (including Duel types who must share the chosen type)
~If your chosen starter is not of the type you picked, you are forbidden to use it.
~No matter how stuck you get you must not use any other types.
~You are allowed to use only ONE set of TMs in RBY and ONE in GSC.
~Trading for evolution is allowed (Machamp, Alakazam, Golem, Gengar). You may trade between GSC games, so long as you do so, when you reach the place said pokemon would naturally appear (ie, Paras at Ilex forest)
~After you pass certain events or feel the need to update, you reply to the topic with details on how your progress is going, the status of your team, how hard it is, etc.
~You may have only ONE member of a family in your team. That means no duplicating a pokemon to fill your spots. No having two Pikachus to fill out your team.
~You are allowed to link if the pokemon's evolution requires linking. So Kingdra, Steelix, Scizor can be gotten early in game by trading. BUT you can't trade an onix, horsea, scyther, etc from another game so that you will have them in the start! The link is only approved when you have caught the basic pokemon in it's orginal habitat...(example, you can have Steelix in Violet city, if you have caught Onix, or traded one for Bellsprout)
~You can trade a pokemon that is version exclusive and not in your version(example: Vulpix if you play Gold), if you reach the place where its counterpart is caught(route 37, Growlithe).
~The challenge is considered complete upon the reaching, or defeat of Red(aka Ash).

Monotype Challange
Type: Fire
Version: Crystal.
As you've guessed, I picked Cyndaquil at the start of the game. It was a female. I trained him up a bit, as Falkner's birds were equipped with mud-slap, which, if working alone, can really hammer poor Cyndaquil.
We got to Violet city, thrashing trainers and fighting Pokemon like Hoppip along the way. I avoided the Poliwags and kept Cyndaquil at high levels. It took a while, as I made sure he was a couple of levels above the trainers, so battling the wild Pokemon was a pain.
Once Cyndaquil learned ember we went to the Sprout Tower and demolished the Bellsprout's. Cyndaquil got to level 14 and evolved into Quilava. Huzzah!
I wandered around to the left of Violet and, being Crystal, I caught myself a Growlithe. He was level 4, so I raised him extensively against wild Pokemon. At the moment he's level 9. I'll try and raise him to level 12 to take on Falkner.
Status:
Quilava [F]: Lv 14
Growlithe [M]: Lv 09
Location: Violet City

Player: Steve
Type: Steel
"I need you to run an errand for me," Prof. Elm said. "I'll give you a pok?mon for a partner. They're all rare pok?mon that we just found."
"Ooh, are any of'em those new Steel-types you told me about?" As soon as young Steve had heard about this new type, he knew he wanted to experience it.
"Erm, no, sorry. They're the Grass-type Chikorita, the Fire-type Cyndaquil, and the Water-type Totodile."
"Eeh..."
"...tell you what. If you want to catch and raise Steel-types, I'd suggest you take Cyndaquil. We've learned that Steel-types are weak against Fire, so with Cyndaquil at your side you shouldn't have a problem capturing them."
"...okay!"
Steve got Cyndaquil!
On his way to Mr. Pok?mon's house, Steve remembered that Skarmory roosted in the mountains just north of here, but when he went from Route 29 to Route 46, he came up against cliffs that he couldn't climb. If he wanted a Skarmory, he'd have to go the long way around. As he passed through Cherrygrove, he asked the people he met...he got a Map Card, but no info on where he might get Steel-types. As he worked his way up Route 30, he reflected on his position...training Cyndaquil was fun, but it just wasn't what he truly wanted to do...
"Cynda."
"Huh?"
"Cyn, cyndaaquill."
"What!? I don't hate you, I...I, uh...yeah, sorry, I'm not really being fair to you, am I? You are doing well. I'll try to work with you a little better."
"Quil!"
When Steve arrived at Mr. Pok?mon's house, he was swept up in one excitement after another...Mr. Pok?mon giving him the egg...Prof. Oak pronouncing him 'fit' and giving him a Pok?dex to fill...and then Prof. Elm calling and gibbering about something that had gone horribly wrong back in New Bark.
Steve and Cyndaquil headed back to New Bark, but on the way they ran into a mysterious, bratty red-haired kid with a familiar-looing Totodile...Cyndaquil beat it easily thanks to Cyndaquil's Smokescreen ability, but Steve was left wondering...and when he reached New Bark, his suspicion was confirmed. Prof. Elm's Totodile had been stolen, by the boy named Kyle...
Current team:
L8 Cyndaquil
Tune in next time, when Steve actually gets a Steel-type!

Progress:
As I was traing Tantalos in the Growlithe Patch on route 34 it reached l.10. I was tired of the slow progress I was making and said I would try my luck at the Violet City Gym Again, I tried to defeat the Pidgey with my trusty Zubat but Leech Life just couldn't do the job. Ariathne quickly disposed of the flying foe, but was no match to the strong gust of Pidgeotto.
As we woke up before the pokemon center, we would try again since it gave us exp.points of defeating the darn Pidgey over and over again. Zubat tried to defeat the Pidgey yet again, but failed. I had to recall him because he had 1 hp remaining. Ariathne disposed of the Pidgey AGAIN and faced the strong Pidgeotto. He managed to cut through 3/4 of the Pidgeotto's HP and Poisoning him before he went to sleep. I called my 1HP remaining Zubat to face the awfull bird creature. I used Supersonic. Finally the slap back from confusion and Poison killed the mighty Bird pokemon. My 1HP Zubat had won the badge! He grew to l.11
I recieved the Bagde and made my way up to route 32 witch was my destination ever since I came to Violet. Because that is the route were I can catch my beloved Ekans. My all time favorite of the Poison type. I fixed the puzzel in the Ruins of Alph and started Leech life'ing the Unown until Tantalos reached l.12 and finally learned a decent attack: Bite!
I caught a male Ekans on route 32 and I'm now training it the piddybacking way or against Hoppip.
Current status:
Ariathne/Spinarak [F]: l.16 - Poison sting_Stringshot_Scary Face_Constrict
