So this isn't really widely known as Belarus is a small former soviet European country but essentially: The president has been in office the ENTIRE TIME the country has been independent, is noted to be authoritarian, and completely mishandled the COVID pandemic. It's believed the election was rigged and lied about as he is still president despite the opposing leader receiving the most votes.

The protests stand out because, according to UN, mass human rights violations are taking place against protestors such as: being detained and mistreated, tortured, sexually abused and raped.

And also because of the whole scandal, such a thing has happened in various other countries were the leader was forced out.

Personally, I think it's abhorrent, especially the treatment of the protestors.
