22 years of memories

With the anniversary of Pokemon Red and Green's release taking place yesterday, the franchise is now 22 years old, and still going strong. Some of you might have been on board in the very early days of the franchise, while some others might not have become a fan until recently.

I'm curious, what are some of your earliest memories of Pokemon, and what do you think it was that hooked you on the franchise?

My earliest memory of Pokémon was whilst playing Pokémon Yellow and getting stuck for hours on trying to beat Brock. I couldn't for the life of me work out how to overcome his Onix using my intimidating Pikachu x Metapod combo! Looking back on it I could have possibly given this a little more thought... :D

Regarding what got me hooked I'm really not sure. It was so long ago at this stage that it all feels like a very distant memory, but if I had to guess I'd probably say the anime? I used to watch it allll the time back when I was a kid and I was definitely hooked on that for sure - I guess the games just followed on naturally!

My earliest Pokemon memory was at 9 years old. It was Christmas and i really wanted Pokemon Red for some reason. I think i saw it on a store shelf or i was watching the show. I remember waking up and entering the room, my mom holding the game. I ran to it, hugged my mom, and proceeded to focus on only that game all day.

Another memory as a kid was going into Kmart and looking at Pokemon Yellow. My mom didn't want to waste money on a game she thought was the same as red, so she asked what was different. I told her, and as i begged her to buy it, she drops it in the cart and i get filled with all kinds of excitement on the way home.

One of my favorite memories was my hype over gen 2. I looked at Pokemon magazines showing off the starters, i patiently waited for Pokemon Johto on tv, and i got an issue of EGM with my favorite legendary Ho-oh on the cover. I read the article on gold and silver over and over. When i finally got the game, it became my favorite of all time. Then HGSS reminded me of that love. I haven't stopped loving this series for the last 20 years.

Thankfully because i have Red, Yellow, and that EGM magazine, i can relive those moments all over again.

It was around the time of Pokemon Crystal's release and I finally had made a good friend at my new school. I was usually reluctant to confide in people how much I loved Pokemon. We were finishing elementary school, and while that's the perfect age for a beginning Pokemon trainer about 10, being silly I thought I was getting old for Pokemon, and figured that I would get teased for watching a baby show. But I felt I could open up to this one person, who had confessed pokemania to me. She was also nice and mature and happened to be from the state I had just moved from.

I was the awkward girl so it was unusual for me to invite anyone over, but Jenna was special. My mum was so relieved that I was making friends that she went out of her way to make it a nice weekend. She picked us up from school then took us to a bakery in town and let us pick deserts for our pokemon-athon. Me and my friend left with all kinds of scrumptious cookies, then got ourselves some cheese burgers, fries, shakes from a diner next door. The third stop was a local video rental store-- and of course we searched for anything related to pokemon. There weren't many titles, most of them were older but I remember renting The Power of One dvd and a tape with some different episodes on it I think Pokemon Shipwreck, Island of the Giant Pokemon and the ep Tentacool and Tentacruel.

When we got home I showed off the jewels of my collection, my Dragonites, my Espeon, my legendaries. Then I demonstrated all kinds of glitches you could do with the gameboy color, parts parts of GSC that she didn't even know existed. We traded witch eachother and completed both of our Pokedexes. I was really happy to have a Gengar from her. Then I presented my Pikachu plushie

Over the course of the weekend we went swimming and played tag with my German Shepherd-- the woods were behind my house and the beach was close by and the weather was cool. We played old N64 games, not all of them were Pokemon, but of course some were like Pokemon Snap, Pokemon Stadium 2, and even the Supersmash brithers series since I usually played as Pikachu (when I wasn't Kirby or Ness.) We eventually ordered pizza, watched all the pokemon episodes and movies, and when it was finally time to go home mum woke us to a delicious breakfast of bacon, scrambled eggs sausages, orange juice and waffles. Oh, that was a good weekend.
