Type:
Ability (Normal): Limber (1st) / Technician (2nd) / Unnerve (Hidden)
Ability (Alolan): Fur Coat (1st) / Technician (2nd) / Rattled (Hidden)
Appearances:
- Meowth
- Alolan Meowth

- Alolan Persian (Level up with Happiness)
Additional forms?: One
- Alolan (Introduced in Sun and Moon): Stats swapped around(65, 60(-10), 60, 75(+10), 65, 115)
- Hey look, it's another Pokemon that's had a big influx in popularity thanks to the anime. In all seriousness, Meowth and Persian are alright. I like cats, even if my mom can't stand being next to them due to allergies. I like how normal Meowth is based off of the maneki neko (aka. beckoning cat) that's supposed to give good luck, hence the little coin on their head.
- It is strange how the famous one from the anime is the only one that can speak legit human language throughout the entire series instead of just using telepathy like legendaries can. (I dunno.)
- Persian is cool, but I can't help but notice it's more based off of a siamese cat than an actual persian. I do not know what to make of their combat capabilities cause I never use them. (In retrospect, I know they're killer at using Fake Out.)
- The Alolan forms, on the other hand... I like them a lot more than the normal versions thanks to their Dark typing and Alolan Meowth's sassier behavior.
- Alolan Persian, oh my god. It's like a purple Garfield. Joking aside, it's likely that Alolan Persian is based off of the British shorthair breed of cats, who are almost a one-for-one match for our big dumb cat. I mean just look at em.

#054 - 055: Golduck Family
Type:
Ability: Damp (1st) / Cloud Nine (2nd) / Swift Swim (Hidden)
Appearances:
Stats of final evolution: 500 (80, 82, 78, 95, 80, 85)
Additional forms?: N/A
Thoughts:
- I've always liked Psyduck more as a character than an actual Pokemon to use for fights, to be honest. How they're always going "psiyiyii..." and have magic psychic headaches that let them wreak havoc despite not actually being a Psychic type? Eh whatever.
- Golduck is a bit more generic to me as it's just a blue duck that's not even Water/Psychic, which is strange considering how this wasn't even rectified with an Alolan form. What can you do, though?
- It's likely that the gold in Golduck comes from the fact the Psychic type uses gold as part of their colors. Then it gets weird when you realize it's pinkish-purple everywhere else.
- Cloud Nine is outrageous in that it cancels any weather effect on the field, even the ones caused by Primal Kyogre and Groudon... Yes, a little duck somehow has the power to undo weather caused by gods.
-
#056 - 057: Primeape Family
Type:
Ability: Vital Spirit (1st) / Anger Point (2nd) / Defiant (Hidden)
Appearances:
Stats of final evolution: 455 (65, 105, 60, 60, 70, 95)
Additional forms?: N/A
Thoughts:
- Angry pig monkeys! That's all I have to say about that. Primeape is strong, but being pure Fighting and not having great speed or defenses means you're going down hard in today's games.
- I am curious/worried about how it's always mad and how it lives and dies angry with no friends (apparently, but who holds the Pokedex as the gospel truth? Especially with the Rotomdex being a troll)
- Anger Point would be a lot scarier as an ability if it weren't for Primeape's awful survivability. It's a free Belly Drum (maximized attack) if they get hit by a critical, so the only way they'd be able to make good use of it is if a partner used Frost Breath or some other weak move with a high critical ratio.
-
#058 - 059: Arcanine Family
Type:
Ability: Intimidate (1st) / Flash Fire (2nd) / Justified (Hidden)
Appearances:
Stats of final evolution: 555 (90, 110, 80, 100, 80, 95)
Additional forms?: N/A
Thoughts:
- I love dogs. Let me just say that now. Growlithe is a precious puppy.
- Arcanine, on the other hand, has a bevy of things under its collar/belt/who gives a caramel. Not only are they a giant flaming dog, they're still pretty strong even today. Intimidate, Extreme Speed and Flare Blitz with that kind of attack is no laughing matter.
- I do find it strange how it's considered a legendary Pokemon despite, well... not actually being a legendary. Perhaps the term was more loose back in those days because, as we've seen, a really strong Pokemon is actually kind of rare in Gen 1. It's fascinating to see how much things change as time passes.
- Arcanine themselves are likely to be based off of the shisa, mythical dog-like creatures with statues that serve as wards to protect a location from evil spirits. Maybe that's what they meant by legendary all along, to be honest.
-
#060 - 062 / #186: Poliwrath Family
Type:
Ability: Water Absorb (1st both) / Damp (2nd both) / Swift Swim (Hidden - Poliwrath) / Drizzle (Hidden - Politoed)
Appearances:
Stats of final evolution (Poliwrath): 510 (90, 95, 95, 70, 90, 70)
Stats of final evolution (Politoed): 500 (90, 75, 75, 90, 100, 70)
Additional forms?: N/A
Thoughts:
- A family of Pokemon based off of frogs and tadpoles... Poliwag is adorable, but Poliwrath is literally just an angry Poliwhirl. The fact the black swirl on their stomach are their organs on display isn't exactly comforting, so I'll just leave that off with... damn, I don't think I ever wanted to get one.
- This changed with Politoed. Not only are they a proper frog, they're pretty lethal with the right set-up (assuming it's the Drizzle Politoed) and are just so gosh-darn cute.
-
#063 - 065: Alakazam Family
Type:
Ability: Synchronize (1st) / Inner Focus (2nd) / Magic Guard (Hidden) / Trace (Mega)
Appearances:
- Abra
- Kadabra (Level 16)
- Alakazam (Trade)
- Mega Alakazam (Alakazite)
Additional forms?: One
- Mega (Introduced in X and Y): +100 (55, 50, 65(+20), 175(+40), 105(+10), 150(+30))
- Abra may be infamous for running away, but that's just because they're not ready yet.
- Kadabra is notable because a real life magician called Uri Geller tried to press charges against Nintendo under the grounds that Kadabra was an unauthorized, anti-semitic parody of himself... Leading to Kadabra being removed from the anime altogether. Oops.
- Alakazam is really cool, especially for one of the early Pokemon in the line-up. They're a powerful, wise wizard that served as one of the pillars of the game back when Psychics ruled everything. Today they're just as deadly now that they have something like Magic Guard and a mega evolution under their belt.
- Mega Alakazam is practically Jesus or the Buddhist equivalent. Like no joke, the long flowing beard and the meditating stance is a sign that they have ascended. It's a pretty awe-inspiring design and the power that comes with it is equally appropriate. Sure, give them a good sucker punch and they'll go down in a snap, but that's still risky. It all works, even if Alakazam isn't an outright favorite of mine.
-
#066 - 068: Machamp Family
Type:
Ability: Guts (1st) / No Guard (2nd) / Steadfast (Hidden)
Appearances:
Stats of final evolution: 505 (90, 130, 80, 65, 85, 55)
Additional forms?: N/A
Thoughts:
- For the longest time, I didn't know what to think about the Machamp line other than they're buff as fuck and that I couldn't get one due to a lack of people to trade with.
- Now, though? Not only do I have the obvious Jojoke, Machamp with No Guard is actually pretty amazing. See, Dynamic Punch used to be more risk than reward - it was a strong move that had a 100% chance to confuse but only hit half of the time due to its piss-poor accuracy. No Guard takes that and makes it go from "situational" to "busted", even more so than Hurricane and Mega Pidgeot.
- Admittedly, the sight of a Pokemon wearing clothes (in this case a speedo and a champion's belt) is very questionable but I'm not even going to try to figure out the logic behind that.
-
#069 - 071: Victreebel Family
Type:
Ability: Chlorophyll / Gluttony (Hidden)
Appearances:
- Bellsprout
- Weepinbell (Level 21)
- Victreebel (Leaf Stone)
Additional forms?: N/A
Thoughts:
- Bellsprout is so weedy and lanky that it amuses me. Weepinbell is equally dopey.
- Victreebel, on the other hand, kinda scares me not only because it's vicious but also because it's based on a carnivorous pitcher plant. You know, those plants that ensnare bugs and small animals and melt them with digestive fluids. Poison type for a reason, you know...
- I remember James's Victreebel the most out of any in the series just for how it latched onto his head, but that's about it.
- Despite the surprisingly decent offenses, I wouldn't recommend them in this day and age where Fire, Flying, Ice and Psychic types hit harder than ever.
-
#072 - 073: Tentacruel Family
Type:
Ability: Clear Body (1st) / Liquid Ooze (2nd) / Rain Dish (Hidden)
Appearances:
- Tentacool
- Tentacruel (Level 30)
Additional forms?: N/A
Thoughts:
- Ah, the aquatic counterpart to Zubat. I guess it's appropriate that when they evolve, they get good too. Tentacruel isn't half bad. Slap an Assault Vest on them and they can tank pretty much anything that's not a physical attack, even if it's super effective. Acid Spray is great too just for how it drops an opponent's special defense by two stages.
- I think it's hilarious that Liquid Ooze isn't a more common ability for Poison Pokemon due to... well, you're draining health from a Pokemon that's part poison.
- I remember how they had to ban a certain episode of the Pokemon anime thanks to a giant Tentacruel smashing apart a skyscraper... after the events of September 11th. Thankfully the episode's been put back into rotation since then after the controversy died down, but damn.
- Tentacruel was originally going to have the incredibly badass Man o' War as a beta name. It is also a name for a jellyfish-like creature that, unlike actual jellyfish, is made up of tons of smaller organisms called zooids. That's pretty neat.
-
#074 - 076: Golem Family
Type:
Ability (Normal): Rock Head (1st) / Sturdy (2nd) / Sand Veil (Hidden)
Ability (Alolan): Magnet Pull (1st) / Sturdy (2nd) / Galvanize (Hidden)
Appearances:
- Geodude
- Graveler (Level 25)
- Golem (Trade)
- Alolan Geodude
- Alolan Graveler (Level 25)
- Alolan Golem (Trade)
Additional forms?: Three
- Alolan (Introduced in Sun and Moon): The same stats
- I've chalked up the name "Geodude" to early installment weirdness given how genders weren't a thing (barring the Nido family), but to be fair you can call anybody a dude. It's not specific to anybody in particular, so it only makes sense.
- Golem and pals were... just there for me. Sure, the occasional wild sturdy Graveler using Explosion is amazingly awful, but they get outclassed by the Rhyperior family in a heartbeat.
- However, the Alolan forms being Rock/Electric... changes things. It makes its weaknesses less obnoxious, it has a bitchin' beard (which both genders can have, by the way - this applies to Mega Alakazam too) along with a fancy new ability called Galvanize.
- Galvanize is the Electric counterpart to Pixilate, Refrigerate and Aerilate in that it turns Normal moves into Electric, which is really cool. The protrusion growing out the top of Alolan Golem's body reminds me of a railgun and that's badass.
- The Alolan forms might have saved this one from being just average to me.
-
#077 - 078: Rapidash Family
Type:
Ability: Run Away (1st) / Flash Fire (2nd) / Flame Body (Hidden)
Appearances:
Stats of final evolution: 500 (65, 100, 70, 80, 80, 105)
Additional forms?: N/A
Thoughts:
- Let me just say this: The first horse Pokemon we get in the entire series is a unicorn that's on fire. The shiny version also has blue fire - that, my friends, is metal.
- True to their name, they're fast and kind of strong, but... yeah, they're not too impressive. I still like them quite a bit, but they're just not good enough to use in a real fight.
-
#079 - 080 / #199: Slowbro Family
Type:
Ability: Oblivious (1st - both) / Own Tempo (2nd - both) / Regenerator (Hidden - both) / Shell Armor (Mega)
Appearances:
- Slowpoke
- Slowbro (Level 37)
- Slowking (Trade with King's Rock)
- Mega Slowbro (Slowbronite)
Stats of final evolution (Slowking): 490 (95, 75, 80, 100, 110, 30)
Additional forms?: One
- Mega (Introduced in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire): +100 (95, 75, 180(+70), 130(+30), 80, 30)
- Ladies and gentlemen, behold - the Dopey Pokemon. That's not me being a wise-ass either, that's what they're actually classified as. Slowpoke is precious, and it's true to its name by being one of the slowest Pokemon alive. I'm confused as to whether Slowpoke is an otter or an aquatic salamander, though.
- Slowbro and Slowking are where things get weird for me. I love Slowking's design and how it's a regal wizard king that got smarter when the Shellder gave him brain-enhancing juices...
- But then we have Slowbro who is just a bigger Slowpoke with the angry Shellder on its tail. (Which, funnily enough, looks nothing like other Shellder)
- Things get silly with Mega Slowbro, who is easily one of the tankiest Pokemon in the entire game with a ridiculous 180 Defense and Shell Armor to protect it from critical hits. Given how it can learn Calm Mind and Slack Off, that would cover even the middling Special Defense and then the only way to kill it would be to use Toxic... Not fun. It would have been cool if Slowking got a Mega Evolution, but whatever.
-
#081 - 082 / #462: Magnezone Family
Type:
Ability: Magnet Pull (1st) / Sturdy (2nd) / Analytic (Hidden)
Appearances:
Stats of final evolution: 535 (70, 70, 115, 130, 90, 60)
Additional forms?: N/A
Thoughts:
- It's so weird when you remember that Magnemite wasn't a Steel type in Gen 1. Like you could smack it around just fine. Magneton (and Dugtrio for that matter) are also guilty for just being the same Pokemon stacked on top of each other, even if I feel Dugtrio got more interesting when Gen 7 rolled around.
- Then there's the badass known as Magnezone. It goes from simply being a magnet to being a goddamn flying saucer that shoots thunderbolts. I love it.
- It helps that even with a crippling Ground weakness (despite visibly floating), they're wicked powerful. Like Magnezone is practically tailor-made to murder fairies, water types... and even other Steel types (barring Steelix) if you have Magnet Pull on them.
- The mons that beat them out are faster, more versatile Electric mons like Thundurus, but Thundurus is at least a legendary with access to Prankster so I don't feel that's fair to compare.
-
#083: Farfetch'd
Type:
Ability: Keen Eye (1st) / Inner Focus (2nd) / Defiant (Hidden)
Appearance:
Stats of final evolution: 377 (52, 90, 55, 58, 62, 60)
Additional forms?: N/A
Thoughts:
- I find that incredibly surreal that Farfetch'd is the first Pokemon that doesn't evolve from or into anything. However, barring their mildly amusing appearance and item (a leek onion stick), they are pitifully weak and kind of forgettable.
- Farfetch'd originally did not have 90 attack - that's a boost it got when Sun and Moon came along. Okay that's cool, but they're still pretty bad.
-
#084 - 085: Dodrio Family
Type:
Ability: Run Away (1st) / Early Bird (2nd) / Tangled Feet (Hidden)
Appearances:
Stats of final evolution: 470 (60, 110, 70, 60, 60, 110)
Additional forms?: N/A
Thoughts:
- A two-headed and three-headed dodo bird that can somehow fly despite dodos being flightless? Alright, cool, I'm just rolling with it. I like how each head has their own personality with one always looking depressed about something.
- I did not expect that good of an attack or speed, but I'll take it.
- This is what I'll always remember the Doduo line for.
-
#086 - 087: Dewgong Family
Type:
Ability: Thick Fat (1st) / Hydration (2nd) / Ice Body (Hidden)
Appearances:
Stats of final evolution: 475 (90, 70, 80, 70, 95, 70)
Additional forms?: N/A
Thoughts:
- It's a seal. Or, well, in Dewgong's case, a dugong/manatee. I find them cute, but that's where the positives end. They're not too memorable or all that strong, so what can you do?
-
#088 - 089: Muk Family
Type:
Ability (Normal): Stench (1st) / Sticky Hold (2nd) / Poison Touch (Hidden)
Ability (Alolan): Poison Touch (1st) / Gluttony (2nd) / Power of Alchemy (Hidden)
Appearances:
- Grimer
- Alolan Grimer
- Muk (Level 38)
- Alolan Muk (Level 38)
Additional forms?: Two
- Alolan (Introduced in Sun and Moon): The same stats
- A pile of living sludge is a Pokemon. As much as I'd like to go "eeech" to that, I actually kind of like the Muk line. They're so disgusting that I both love them and hate them at the same time. How they can turn a virgin lake into a cesspool in like a few seconds is absolutely disturbing.
- Alolan Grimer and Muk take this up by a whole few new notches - not only are they even worse when it comes to the poison (because now there's industrial sludge), but their chemical make-up is now so fucked that it's incomprehensible as to what they're made out of. Hence the Dark typing and why Psychic doesn't work on them anymore.
- I love Alolan Muk's rainbow color and all of the extra little bits it has, it's just so psychedelic.
- I can tell Alolan Muk's going to be far more useful now that it's part Dark. Those defenses plus the removal of a Psychic weakness? An undeniable monster.
- (Of course Ground will still be a problem.)
- Power of Alchemy is an impressive sounding ability, but what does it actually do? Essentially, it lets Alolan Muk copy the ability of a fallen ally. My head is practically spinning with all of the combos you can do with this, so woof.
-
#090 - 091: Cloyster Family
Type:
Ability: Shell Armor (1st) / Skill Link (2nd) / Overcoat (Hidden)
Appearances:
Stats of final evolution: 525 (50, 95, 180, 85, 45, 70)
Additional forms?: N/A
Thoughts:
- Aside from the obvious naughty joke that will get baby Dan smacked by a newspaper, Cloyster was always a Pokemon that I never knew could be useful. I just never looked into them that much.
- My initial perception of them was shattered when I learned three critical things: Skill Link, Shell Smash and Icicle Spear. Those three things turned an otherwise unimpressive Pokemon into an absolute serial killer.
- Skill Link guarantees Icicle Spear to hit all five times and Shell Smash gives offense and speed a giant boost at the cost of some defense, but who needs it when you're going Sanic Speed?
- I like Cloyster now and I plan on getting a shiny one soon just because I'm a masochist that way.

#092 - 094: Gengar Family
Type:
Ability: Cursed Body (As of Gen 7) / Shadow Tag (Mega) / Levitate (pre Gen 7)
Appearances:
- Gastly
- Haunter (Level 25)
- Gengar (Trade)
- Mega Gengar (Gengarite)
Additional forms?: One
- Mega (Introduced in X and Y): +100 (60, 65, 80(+20), 170(+40), 95(+20), 130(+20))
- Hooo boy, we've finally gotten to one of my legitimate top ten favorites.
- Gastly is an ethereal mass of smog that comes directly after Cloyster in the Dex... and they have the same face. Make of that as you will.
- Haunter is great to me just for the towering abomination that is the Black Fog Haunter and their original Gen 1 sprites. These are the eyes of a coke fiend - emphasis on fiend.
- Gastly and Haunter are alright in of themselves due to being spooky ghosts, but it's Gengar who really sells it for me.
- Not only are they a great deal more creative than just being a ghost, they're supposed to be a doppelganger. It's likely they're the evil shadow of a Clefable, but as far as I see it, that's just a theory.
(is shot before I get to say a game theory) - They have a creepy-cool design and are so strong that they had to be nerfed in Sun and Moon to have a different ability than Levitate. Won't stop me from using them, though.
- Mega Gengar, though. Holy fuck, as if this monster needed more firepower. Their already cool design is made amazing with the third eye and the overall sharper appearance, but what really makes them shine is what they can do.
- Shadow Tag combined with Perish Song and Protect are so insidious that they've been banned in a lot of places, and they've given me my personal share of headaches. They're practically the Grim Reaper in this form... and even without that, they're still incredibly lethal! I love my big dumb ghost.
- The fact shiny Mega Gengar is pure white is amazing, because you'd expect a phantom, a master of the black arts to have a dark color scheme... but no, we're breaking stereotypes here.

#095 / #208: Steelix Family
Type:
Ability: Rock Head (1st) / Sturdy (2nd) / Sheer Force (Hidden) / Sand Force (Mega)
Appearances:
- Onix
- Steelix (Trade with Metal Coat)
- Mega Steelix (Steelixite)
Additional forms?: One
- Mega (Introduced in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire): +100 (75, 125(+40), 230(+30), 55, 95(+30), 30)
- Onix is a badass idea for a Pokemon - a giant rock snake. Unfortunately, it's not too good by itself thanks to a lion's share of weaknesses and embarassing stats barring defense.
- Enter Steelix and Mega Steelix, successfully redeeming the poor Onix into an iron supertank... snake. Not only are the designs really cool, the mega evolution also gives them a tremendous attack boost and makes them effectively impregnable to anything physical no matter what it is.
- The only thing that can beat them out in sheer bulk is Mega Aggron. They even get some special defense because we needed to make it harder to kill, apparently.

#096 - 097: Hypno Family
Type:
Ability: Insomnia (1st) / Forewarn (2nd) / Inner Focus (Hidden)
Appearances:
Stats of final evolution: 483 (85, 73, 70, 73, 113, 67)
Additional forms?: N/A
Thoughts:
- Oh hey, look, it's Pokemon's resident bad touch mon. Like it wasn't enough to have a dream-eating tapir with psychic powers, we had to have its evolution that whisks sleeping kids away.
- In all seriousness, Hypno and Drowzee are weird and kind of weedy compared to other Psychic types, but that's sort of what makes them interesting to me.
-
#098 - 099: Kingler Family
Type:
Ability: Hyper Cutter (1st) / Shell Armor (2nd) / Sheer Force (Hidden)
Appearances:
Stats of final evolution: 475 (55, 130, 115, 50, 50, 75)
Additional forms?: N/A
Thoughts:
- Crabs. There was this one time where I found a crawdad in a rain puddle near the buses in my school and I swear to god it was one of the most terrifying things I've ever seen. Sure, we put it in a proper source of water afterward, but damn.
- Despite my association with crabs and crawdads, Krabby and Kingler are... average. One has a giant claw to smack people around with a whopping 130 attack, but that's all I can really say about them. They're alright.
-
#100 - 101: Electrode Family
Type:
Ability: Soundproof (1st) / Static (2nd) / Aftermath (Hidden)
Appearances:
Stats of final evolution: 490 (60, 50, 70, 80, 80, 150)
Additional forms?: N/A
Thoughts:
- Christ, that is one hell of a speed stat. Sure, they might not be able to fatally wound anything but that's just woah.
- Electrode and Voltorb fascinate me because they're based on the concept of mimics - particularly, monsters that assume the form of treasure to lure in adventurers. That's a cool idea even if their design is literally just a Pokeball. Then again, it's a giant Pokeball that sucks in electricity and explodes if provoked, so that's terrifying.
- Electrode has that grin that makes them look like a mischevious uncle. I can't help but giggle a bit at that thought.
