Games:
I remember enjoying the hell out of Sapphire when I first got it. There was a lot to love, ranging from the absolutely stunning soundtrack (Hoenn's the best in the series for me), two teams to fight (Although you get both in Emerald), the variety of interesting places you could visit (Sealed Chamber and the Sunken Ship, for one), and most importantly the new Pokemon.
I can't believe I almost forgot to mention Secret Bases, the best thing ever. You could have your own customizable pad and in ORAS they let you challenge other people in it... leading to the incredibly useful Blissey bases where some generous people deliberately create self-terminating Blisseys with no attacking moves. Effectively, that means you could get some of the highest possible EXP payloads in the game without even having to raise a finger.
Oh, there was also the addition of Double Battles and Abilities, both of which added a tremendous amount of variety to the metagame due to all of the strategizing players would have to do now that there's two Pokemon fighting at once on both sides along with unique, possibly game-changing skills.
Contests were a cute little diversion from normal fighting and I appreciate that ORAS made it more cinematic in a way... but it's not like you see me clearing it multiple times.
Anyway... Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire improved the original game by quite a bit, complete with a neat little postgame storyline that... oh, you know, introduced that everything from Gen 6 onward is an alternate timeline. Just your everyday remake. Aqua and Magma were also expanded upon to the point where they actually (mostly) made sense and didn't want to just expand the ocean/landmass for no reason.
I feel that, on average, Gen 3 has the most well-rounded Pokemon in the series, which I consider a step up from Gen 1's basic-but-effective and Gen 2's appealing-but-overall-weak Pokemon. Hoenn's theme about nature and how they relate to other Pokemon/people is particularly interesting because now that means the landscape is actively shaped by Pokemon and human relationships.
For example, Fortree is a town built in the trees along with Pokemon, Pacifidlog is built over a Corsola colony and so on.
All in all, they're some of the best games in the series even if they have aggravating terrain to go through.

Spoiler:
#252 - 254: Sceptile Family
Type:
Ability: Overgrow / Unburden (Hidden) / Lightning Rod (Mega)
Appearances:
- Treecko
- Grovyle (Level 16)
- Sceptile (Level 36)
- Mega Sceptile (Sceptilite)
Additional forms?: One
- Mega (Introduced in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire): +100 (70, 110(+25), 75(+10), 145(+40), 75, 145(+25))
- The Sceptile family is really cool, all things considered. It takes the theme of "plant dinosaur" in a different direction in that they're a slick, fast and powerful gecko monster that unfortunately wouldn't hit their stride until Gen 4 and its Physical/Special split.
- I'll admit, I remember Grovyle a lot more due to their huge supporting role in the Mystery Dungeon Explorers games. They were pretty badass and I could respect them due to how hard they were fighting to save the future.
- Mega Sceptile adds some red, gives them a dragon typing and kicks their speed into overdrive because yowza that's fast. They also get Lightning Rod as an ability (because that tail has to be used for something, you know), which means they're a good swap-in to any powerful electric type. All in all, a good Mega evolution for a good Pokemon.

#255 - 257: Blaziken Family
Type:
Ability: Blaze / Speed Boost (Hidden and Mega)
Appearances:
- Torchic
- Combusken (Level 16)
- Blaziken (Level 36)
- Mega Blaziken (Blazikenite)
Additional forms?: One
- Mega (Introduced in X and Y): +100 (80, 160(+40), 80(+10), 130(+20), 80(+10), 100(+20))
- It's the KFC fighter!
- I mean, yeah. Torchic is a lovable little pile of feathers and Combusken is... alright, but it's Blaziken that takes the cake on this one.
- They're an flaming, bipedal kung fu chicken... What a concept. Blaziken looks like someone that would seriously mess you up, not helped by their great attack stat and practically broken hidden ability - Speed Boost.
- Speed Boost being the ability that raises your speed every turn even if you don't do anything...
- Things get wackier with Mega Blaziken, who somehow received their Mega Evolution a game before the rest of their starter friends... that's either foreshadowing ORAS or a big fat load of favoritism.
- Mega Blaziken recieves a tremendous boost in attack, rounds the other stats to nice 80s, and hands them Speed Boost... again for some reason. I guess it's for the people who didn't go through the effort of getting Speed Boost on their normal Blaziken, I dunno.
- Blaziken is great, but not my favorite... primarily due to them being a pain in the ass during competitive and the fact they're not The Best to me.
-
#258 - 260: Swampert Family
Type:
Ability: Torrent / Damp (Hidden) / Swift Swim (Mega)
Appearances:
- Mudkip
- Marshtomp (Level 16)
- Swampert (Level 36)
- Mega Swampert (Swampertite)
Additional forms?: One
- Mega (Introduced in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire): +100 (100, 150(+40), 110(+20), 95(+10), 110(+20), 70(+10))
- You bet your ass I like Mudkips! Out of the Hoenn trio, the Swampert family has to be my favorite because of how dopey they are. They're these big mud fishes that kind of serve as the more badass (and viable) counterpart to Quagsire due to their better stats and (for me personally), a more fleshed out design.
- Mudkip has a meme because of how many people like it, for christ's sake.
- Mega Swampert is what would happen if you feed Swampert super-steroids. It's amazing how an already good design is improved just by giving them giant balloon muscles. It's not for show either, because a hefty attack boost and access to Swift Swim turns them into a beast of Kingdra-like proportions.
- ... In fact, they may even be worse because Kingdra at least had 95 in both offenses while Mega Swampert has 150 attack even without rain. Now that, my friends, is outrageous.
-
#261 - 262: Mightyena Family
Type:
Ability: Intimidate (1st) / Quick Feet (2nd) / Moxie (Hidden)
Appearances:
Stats of final evolution: 420 (70, 90, 70, 60, 60, 70)
Additional forms?: N/A
Thoughts:
- Not gonna lie, the Mightyena family is one of the best designed early game Pokemon. They're black hyenas that fight dirty, for corn's sake! Mightyena is so cool to me, you don't even understand.
- It helps that they're one of the first Pokemon to really showcase the new ability system - Intimidate is both really useful and annoying to get hit with since it cuts your attack. It makes sense - you're not going to want to charge towards something that intimidates you.
- That said, there's certainly better Dark Pokemon out there... but for a Pokemon you find at the beginning of the game? They're actually really badass!
- (I also did not know that Mightyena as supposed to be a hyena and not just a wolf.)
-
#263 - 264: Linoone Family
Type:
Ability: Pickup (1st) / Gluttony (2nd) / Quick Feet (Hidden)
Appearances:
Stats of final evolution: 420 (78, 70, 61, 50, 61, 100)
Additional forms?: N/A
Thoughts:
- Linoone is another nice one, if a bit too simple for my likes. Zigzagoon is cute since it's a racoon based on zigzagging patterns... while Linoone is a straight line.
- That speed is nice, but everything else is average. Then again, this is the best shade of average we've gotten so far - I actually really like how Linoone looks and it's not terrible.
-
#265 - 269: Dustox and Beautifly Family
Type:
Ability (Dustox): Shield Dust / Compound Eyes (Hidden)
Ability (Beautifly): Swarm / Rivalry (Hidden)
Appearances:
- Wurmple
- Cascoon (Level 7 depending on personality value)
- Dustox (Level 10)
- Silcoon (Level 7 depending on personality value)
- Beautifly (Level 10)
Stats of final evolution (Beautifly): 395 (60, 70, 50, 100, 70, 65)
Additional forms?: N/A
Thoughts:
- Wurmple is neat... not really because of any competitive worth, but from an appearance standpoint.
- Dustox is arguably a more interesting version of Venomoth due to having a more vibrant color palette and a mischevious look on its face. Aside from that, they're actually weaker than Venomoth, so...
- Beautifly is a more vicious and elegant counterpart to Butterfree, seeing as it's more aggressive than it actually looks and sucks out the blood of its victims. (Disclaimer: Yes really.)
- I don't like how it's effectively randomized if you get one or the other, seeing as there's so many things that go into "personality value" that you may as well not even bother.
- Even with that in mind, they're... alright. I'd get one, forget I have it and move on with my life.
-
#270 - 272: Ludicolo Family
Type:
Ability: Swift Swim (1st) / Rain Dish (2nd) / Own Tempo (Hidden)
Appearances:
Stats of final evolution: 480 (80, 70, 70, 90, 100, 70)
Additional forms?: N/A
Thoughts:
- Alright, what happens when you combine the best of a Mexican stereotype with a pineappe and a kappa? You get this magnificent beast. Lotad into Ludicolo is so messed up that it's amazing - like you have to really think outside of the box to get stuff like this.
- It doesn't help that Ludicolo has Swift Swim - combine that with their typing (Water/Grass is only weak to Flying, Poison and Bug) and the fact people pair them up with Politoed and you have a monster on your hands.
- Lethal Joke Character doesn't even cover it.
-
#273 - 275: Shiftry Family
Type:
Ability: Chlorophyll (1st) / Early Bird (2nd) / Pickpocket (Hidden)
Appearances:
Stats of final evolution: 480 (90, 100, 60, 90, 60, 80)
Additional forms?: N/A
Thoughts:
- Shiftry isn't as ridiculous as Ludicolo (because come on, you can't top that), but they are still neat in their own way.
- Seedot is okay while Nuzleaf is... a strange little grass goblin person whose name became the basis for a self-inflicted challenge for Pokemon players. Nuzlockes are crazy even at their most basic level - you are limited to catching the first Pokemon in the route and if any of your Pokemon die, it's game over for them. It turns otherwise simple segments of a game into a nightmare and I have undying respect for people that can actually complete them.
- Shiftry is a step up from Nuzleaf in that they are a dark kabuki tree with wind fans for arms... and a really huge nose. It's great.
-
#276 - 277: Swellow Family
Type:
Ability: Guts / Scrappy (Hidden)
Appearances:
Stats of final evolution: 430 (60, 85, 60, 50, 50, 125)
Additional forms?: N/A
Thoughts:
- Swellow is a cool cat in my book. Their only strong attribute is their ridiculous speed, but they also have a neat design to go along with it.
- The red and the blue work really well with the calm and composed stance they take... and to a point, they even remind me of Falco from Star Fox. I don't know why.
-
#278 - 279: Pelipper Family
Type:
Ability: Keen Eye (1st) / Drizzle (2nd) / Rain Dish (Hidden)
Appearances:
Stats of final evolution: 530 (60, 50, 100, 85, 70, 65)
Additional forms?: N/A
Thoughts:
- Wingull and Pelipper are a seagull and pelican respectively. Now, can someone tell me when Pelipper became the cheaper substitute for Politoed? It's really weird how I've just now started seeing Drizzle teams with Pelipper in them.
- That said, they're alright. I don't particularly love them or hate them - they're average to me.
- I like how they serve as the "mailmen" of the Mystery Dungeon universe, though.
-
#280 - 282 / #475: Gardevoir Family
Type:
Ability (Gardevoir): Synchronize (1st) / Trace (2nd) / Telepathy (Hidden) / Pixilate (Mega)
Ability (Gallade): Steadfast / Justified (Hidden) / Inner Focus (Mega)
Appearances:
- Ralts
- Kirlia (Level 20)
- Gardevoir (Level 30)
- Gallade (Male Kirlia exposed to Dawn Stone)
- Mega Gardevoir (Gardevoirite)
- Mega Gallade (Galladite)
Stats of final evolution (Gallade): 518 (68, 125, 65, 65, 115, 80)
Additional forms?: Two
- Mega Gardevoir (Introduced in X and Y): +100 (68, 85(+20), 65, 165(+40), 135(+20), 100(+20))
- Mega Gallade (Introduced in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire): +100 (68, 165(+40), 95(+30), 65, 115, 110(+30))
- Damn, I really had to wait to get to this one.
- The Gardevoir family has to be one of my top ten favorites (although at this point it's gonna be top 15 or 20 because of the sheer numbers) in the entire series just because of how much is going for them.
- Ralts is a precious baby that has no real powers - they always start off knowing how to growl but not much else.
- Kirlia steps it up by growing their hair(?) out and taking some lessons in ballerina-ing, apparently, given how their idle animation in the games after X/Y have them aggressively tippy-tap the ground.
- Gardevoir is where shit gets real for me, boyos. They are many things - elegant, powerful, and the biggest target for Rule 34. Yeah, Gardevoir has a very feminine design and that drives the internet crazy, despite the fact they can be both male and female. I guess they succeeded too well in making them beautiful.
- I love that they're always dedicated to protecting their trainer and... they can make black holes for some unholy reason.
- The added Fairy typing in Gen 6 was practically a godsend for them as now they laugh at Dark and Bug types with their brand new fairy attacks and Mega Evolution. Ghost is still a major issue, though...
- Gallade is the one part I'm iffy with, though. On one hand, I love their design seeing as they're a badass fist-fighting counterpart to Gardevoir that's also a knight... but on the other, their design is kind of doofy and well... I think it's ridiculous how only male Kirlia can evolve into Gallade.
- The japanese name for Gardevoir is "Sirknight" for god's sake! Sure, Gardevoir is generally depicted as female and therefore princess-like, but again they can be guys too. So it only stands to reason - why can't there be female Gallade too? Like come on, that's stupid!
- Mega Gardevoir puts them into a wedding dress. Like no kidding, the big pumpkin-shaped dress and the opera glove things on their arms is kinda pushing it . Still, it's pretty gorgeous - the shiny version turns the dress black, which makes them into one of the best-looking Pokemon yet. Good thing too, because Pixilate combined with Hyper Voice and that kind of Special Attack is godlike.
- Mega Gallade, though... I was kinda disappointed they didn't get anything that really made them stick out. I mean, the cape and the sharper arm-blades are badass but I was kinda expecting something more. Oh well, when you can hit like a tank on steroids and move as fast as that, I can't really complain. They're sort of overshadowed when compared to Mega Gardevoir, though.
- The Gardevoir family is excellent and one of my mainstays, that's for damn sure.
-
#283 - 284: Masquerain Family
Type:
Ability: Intimidate / Unnerve (Hidden)
Appearances:
- Surskit
- Masquerain (Level 22)
Additional forms?: N/A
Thoughts:
- Surskit was originally the first Water/Bug Pokemon until the Wimpod family came along in Sun and Moon. They have a cute design that's based off of something that, honestly, freaks me right the fuck out in real life: Water striders.
- They're these bugs that move across the surface of water and look more like the cockroaches of the sea than anything else. How Surskit managed to look as adorable as it does is beyond me.
- Masquerain is fabulous, though. It drops its unique typing and lacks that fighting gusto, but they still look fantastic. I like their name and that their wings form evil eyes, hence Intimidate and Unnerve.
-
#285 - 286: Breloom Family
Type:
Ability: Effect Spore (1st) / Poison Heal (2nd) / Technician (Hidden)
Appearances:
Stats of final evolution: 460 (60, 130, 80, 60, 60, 70)
Additional forms?: N/A
Thoughts:
- I didn't know what to make of Shroomish other than the fact that they were a different brand of cute than something like Pichu, but I thought they were alright.
- Enter Breloom who is not only the best designed out of the mushroom Pokemon (being an adorable fist-fighting dinoshroom) but is apparently a real badass when it comes to fighting! Spore, Mach Punch, a great attack stat and a Focus Sash turn them into a harbinger of doom, seeing as they'd more-or-less be guaranteed to survive an attack just to put you to sleep.
- They're kind of predictable and suffer from a horrendous Flying type weakness, but if you can use them correctly then they're a great Pokemon to have.
- I've always wondered how Breloom can punch things if it has little stubby arms, but... as I've recently learned, their arms can stretch a lot longer than I would have imagined. I find this both amusing and terrifying.
-
#287 - 289: Slaking Family
Type:
Ability: Vital Spirit (Vigoroth) -> Truant (Slaking)
Appearances:
Stats of final evolution: 670 (150, 160, 100, 95, 65, 100)
Additional forms?: N/A
Thoughts:
- I like Slakoth for the same reason as Slowpoke - it's so content being lazy that I can't help but love it.
- Vigoroth gets into its more proactive phase and is so roused up that it can't even go to sleep! However, things change back to the status quo when they evolve into Slaking.
- Let me just say... Sweet banana-eating Jesus, those stats are tremendous! You'd expect some world-rending mayhem out of numbers like these!
- Except... there's just one thing. Slaking has legendary-level strength but has one major thing holding it back - Truant. Truant means that Slaking can only attack every other turn, effectively making those impressive numbers meaningless as they can get walled out by anybody that can learn Protect, aka. goddamn everyone.
- I guess they had the mindset of "hey, let's make a really strong Pokemon but limit them with an awkward ability". That's neat and all, but damn, imagine if Slaking had something like Huge Power... There wouldn't be anything left.
- As it remains, I like Slaking for being a big, laid back sloth-gorilla.
-
#290 - 292: Ninjask Family
Type:
Ability (Ninjask): Speed Boost / Infiltrator (Hidden)
Ability (Shedinja): Wonder Guard
Appearances:
Stats of final evolution (Ninjask): 456 (61, 90, 45, 50, 50, 160)
Stats of final evolution (Shedinja): 236 (1, 90, 45, 30, 30, 40)
Additional forms?: N/A
Thoughts:
- Nincada is already neat because it's a ninja cicada... then it evolves into Ninjask and DAMN, that's one fast bug! It helps that Ninjask looks badass to go along with its super-speedy ninja aesthetic. Speed Boost is also helpful when it comes to using Baton Pass...
- But then there's the shell left behind. Shedinja is one of the most unique ghost Pokemon in the series as it not only looks amazing but also has a clever gimmick going for it - it only has 1 HP. Only one point.
- This is where Wonder Guard comes into play - it blocks all damage that's not super effective or indirect, like Stealth Rock, weather or status effects. In the hands of a more powerful Pokemon, it would turn them into one of the most frustrating opponents to fight in the entire series - without question. It's that good.
- Shedinja is far weaker than Ninjask (220 less BST), but I can accept it in this case as it's the possessed shell of the original Pokemon.
-
#293 - 295: Exploud Family
Type:
Ability: Soundproof / Scrappy (Hidden)
Appearances:
Stats of final evolution: 490 (104, 91, 63, 91, 73, 68)
Additional forms?: N/A
Thoughts:
- Whismur is almost more adorable than Ralts, although the deafening screams they emit would probably change my mind otherwise. I find it weird how it has a little hole coming out of its back - I know it's probably supposed to be the same as a plug for an earphone, but it straight up looks like... yeah.
- See, the Exploud family are... well, they're what you'd expect. They're living boomboxes and can shatter eardrums with enough potency to break through solid brick.
- Boomburst is the greatest example of this, as a Scrappy Boomburst powered by Helping Hand and Choice Specs would turn everything into a fine red paste. Not even ghosts are safe.
- Outside of that, they have neat-if-silly designs and not much utility afterward.
-
#296 - 297: Hariyama Family
Type:
Ability: Thick Fat (1st) / Guts (2nd) / Sheer Force (Hidden)
Appearances:
Stats of final evolution: 474 (144, 120, 60, 40, 60, 50)
Additional forms?: N/A
Thoughts:
- Hariyama is straight up my favorite fighting Pokemon out of Gen 3 - it's primarily because they're a sumo wrestler with a ton of beef and attack under their belt. Thick Fat gives them a resistance to Ice and Fire too, which adds to their impeccable tankiness.
- Not much else to say, as they get slaughtered by everything that's a Psychic or a Fairy type.
-
#298: Azurill
Already covered in Gen 2 with the rest of the Azumarill family.
Additional thoughts:
- Azurill looks so sad. Poor baby.
- Has anyone noticed how they're 75% female, but when they evolve into Marill the gender rating is 50/50? I have no idea what's going on there, but given Game Freak it's probably some clever-as-shit explanation behind the scenes.
-
#299 / #476: Probopass Family
Type:
Ability: Sturdy (1st) / Magnet Pull (2nd) / Sand Force (Hidden)
Appearances:
Stats of final evolution: 530 (60, 55, 145, 75, 150, 40)
Additional forms?: N/A
Thoughts:
- Nosepass is an Easter Island moai head as a Pokemon. You can't ever really go wrong with that.
- However, Gen 4 decided to share its love with this little guy and let them evolve into... well, Probopass.
- Probopass is kind of ugly-looking at first, but I can't help but laugh when I see the "moustache" and the hat because it reminds me of Mario as a Pokemon. It's genuinely really cool because it's still a Moai head, only with more bits and bobs thrown in... Based off of a thing in real life, funnily enough.
- I like that it has little companions that make it out to be like the compass Pokemon.
- All in all, I don't necessarily see why people trash on it? I mean yeah, it's a weird design that's a far cry from something cool like Gardevoir or cute like Raichu, but it's still hella creative.
-
#300 - 301: Delcatty Family
Type:
Ability: Cute Charm (1st) / Normalize (2nd) / Wonder Skin (Hidden)
Appearances:
Stats of final evolution: 400 (70, 65, 65, 55, 55, 90)
Additional forms?: N/A
Thoughts:
- Skitty is one of the most adorable Gen 3 Pokemon... Of course, this means they can't fight for beans.
- Delcatty is honestly a bit of a step down from Skitty. It's not as cute, if that makes any sense, and it doesn't help that there's much better cat Pokemon out there.
- There's no real use talking about their battle capacity, but Normalize is very interesting as it's the opposite of the -ilate moves that turn Normal attacks into another type.
- Nah, son, Normalize turns every move into a Normal move... That sounds cool until you realize you are doomed to never hit ghosts and do scratch damage to anything that's part Rock or Steel.
- Cute just doesn't cut it with stats like these.
-
#302: Sableye
Type:
Ability: Keen Eye (1st) / Stall (2nd) / Prankster (Hidden) / Magic Bounce (Mega)
Appearances:
- Normal
- Mega Sableye (Sablenite)
Additional forms?: One
- Mega (Introduced in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire): +100 (50, 85(+10), 125(+50), 85(+20), 115(+50), 20(-30))
- I've been fascinated with Sableye ever since I first laid eyes on them. They're a mysterious gem-eating gremlin that lurks inside of caves and... gruesomely enough, has eaten so many that even its eyes and parts of its body are made up of gems. It's also a giant trickster and put on this big shit-eating grin from time to time, so that's great.
- Dark/Ghost is a powerful typing that originally had no weaknesses and was also incredibly sinister when you think about it - you are such a scumbag ghost that you can't be comprehended by psychic types and bug
heroescan only do neutral damage to you. If the Fairy type didn't come along, this would be an even bigger pain in the ass to deal with. - Pre-Gen 6, Sableye would have been okay. Personally, I would have loved them regardless just because of their twisted looks and prankster personality.
- ... Then Mega Sableye comes along and becomes a massive pain in the ass for everyone involved. Their eye stones glow red and they shoot out a giant red crystal out of their chest that they use as a shield. Not exactly what I was hoping in terms of design... was expecting a big murderfucker ghost with shark teeth, but it just descends into insanity when you realize what they can actually do.
- Mega Sableye doesn't get much in the way of offensive capabilities, but their defense practically skyrockets. Given their typing only leaves them with one weakness... that's bad in of itself.
- Then it turns out they get Recover and the ever-coveted Magic Bounce... Mix all of this together and you get a complete disaster! I mean damn, even with Fairies, this monster is just too much.
- It's fitting that Mega Lopunny is the one that beats it up in that little animated trailer for Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, then.
- Sableye is a trickster to the bitter end and as much as I hate its Mega form, it does exactly what it wanted. Godspeed.
-
#303: Mawile
Type:
Ability: Hyper Cutter (1st) / Intimidate (2nd) / Sheer Force (Hidden) / Huge Power (Mega)
Appearances:
- Normal
- Mega Mawile (Mawilite)
Additional forms?: One
- Mega (Introduced in X and Y): +100 (50, 105(+20), 125(+40), 55, 95(+40), 50)
- Hoooo boy! Mawile is the other tried-and-true favorite of mine out of this generation, and I'd say I would have loved them even before Mega Evolution came along to buff them up.
- They're this adorable little creature that has a larger, more menacing second mouth growing out of the top of their head. This is a reference to the futakuchi-onna, aka. a japanese monster that is essentially a woman with a second mouth growing out of the back of their head... and honestly?
- Mawile is one of the most visually appealing Pokemon out there despite their odd origins - they remind me of kimono girls, to be frank, and their big scary mouth isn't enough to distract me from how cute they are. Too bad there wasn't much to them besides that.
- Until Gen 6 came along and introduced the fairy typing and Mega Mawile to salvage the poor mon out of their funk. Not only is the initial appearance made gorgeous with two mouths and some purple, they become one of the most physically powerful Pokemon... well, ever!
- A Mega Mawile at level 100 would have an attack stat of 678(!!) thanks to Huge Power. That's without boosts, yet it's still enough to seriously threaten anything that's not a dedicated wall like Mega Aggron and Steelix.
- Mawile has come a long way from simply being a niche Pokemon that people liked for their design... Burns and a lack of recovery may hold them back, but when you're as cool as this? I don't even care.
-
#304 - 306: Aggron Family
Type:
Ability: Sturdy (1st) / Rock Head (2nd) / Heavy Metal (Hidden) / Filter (Mega)
Appearances:
- Aron
- Lairon (Level 32)
- Aggron (Level 42)
- Mega Aggron (Aggronite)
Additional forms?: One
- Mega (Introduced in X and Y): +100 (70, 140(+30), 230(+50), 60, 80(+20), 50)
- Aggron is a Pokemon that I've always wanted to get before the Elite Four but couldn't because of that damn level mountain range. I mean, can you blame me? It's an iron-plated triceratops that has the balls to claim an entire mountain as its territory!
- It's like the metallic counterpart to Tyranitar - I'm glad they picked up on this and made it and Tyranitar rivals as the years passed. I assume it's only appropriate to note that it gets a Mega as well.
- Mega Aggron is a moving fortress tougher than old boots made out of adamantium. You cannot topple this beast with physical attacks - I repeat, you may as well give up if you're using physical moves. That defense is impregnable, made even more so with an ability called Filter.
- Filter reduces the amount of damage a super-effective hit would do by 25%. Seeing as Mega Aggron converts to being pure Steel and it gains a small amount of Special Defense in the process, you better bring out your best magic user otherwise this will be a problem.
- Design-wise, Mega Aggron is kind of fat, but I still find it really amusing because... well, yeah, when you emphasize bulk and defense, you're going to look a bit bloated with all that armor protecting your soft, squishy flesh.
-
#307 - 308: Medicham Family
Type:
Ability: Pure Power (Normal and Mega) / Telepathy (Hidden)
Appearances:
- Meditite
- Medicham (Level 37)
- Mega Medicham (Medichamite)
Additional forms?: One
- Mega (Introduced in X and Y): +100 (60, 100(+40), 85(+10), 80(+20), 85(+10), 100(+20))
- I originally didn't know what to make of Medicham. They're this strange big-lipped yoga/belly dancer fighter that's also probably a genie. I mean, they're not exactly a bad design - I like them quite a bit, but not to the same extent as I would like... say, Gallade. They're just sort of... meh.
(The less I say about nipple pants, the better. I am mentally a 6 year old.) - Mega Medicham certainly makes them cooler, though. The ghostly, floating arms and the hefty attack boost give me the impression of a Hindu deity - Shiva in particular. Pure Power is effectively Huge Power with a different name and, like Mawile, could prove very powerful in the right circumstances.
-
#309 - 310: Manectric Family
Type:
Ability: Static (1st) / Lightning Rod (2nd) / Minus (Hidden) / Intimidate (Mega)
Appearances:
- Electrike
- Manectric (Level 26)
- Mega Manectric (Manectite)
Additional forms?: One
- Mega (Introduced in X and Y): +100 (70, 75, 80(+20), 135(+30), 80(+20), 135(+30))
- Manectric is a maned wolf that's based off of a monster called the Raiju, a shapeshifting creature in Japanese mythology whose forms include a blue wolf that's covered with yellow lightning. Neat design, even if the actual Pokemon themselves is a straightforward Electric type that's effectively a more powerful counterpart to Raichu.
- Mega Manectric... puts me in a fit of laughter because holy cow, look at that freakin' hair! It's like they took lessons on how to go Super Saiyan 3.
- In fact, this is what I think of whenever I see Mega Manectric. I'm not sorry.
- Despite the comedy associated with ridiculous hairstyles, Mega Manectric is no joke and taking one lightly will be the death of you much like a real Super Saiyan 3. 135 on both Special Attack and Speed is a hefty increase, made even better with access to Overheat and Volt Switch to maximize the damage while simultaneously running to safety.
- Intimidate may seem weird, but given how it's puffing it's hair up to look more threatening, I can see why. I personally like Manectric a lot.
-
#311 - 312: Plusle and Minun
Type:
Ability (Plusle): Plus / Lightning Rod (Hidden)
Ability (Minun): Minus / Volt Absorb (Hidden)
Appearances:
Stats of Plusle: 405 (60, 50, 40, 85, 75, 95)
Stats of Minun: 405 (60, 40, 50, 75, 85, 95)
Additional forms?: N/A
Thoughts:
- Was it this generation that introduced Pikaclones? Pichu doesn't count since it's actually part of the Raichu family, obviously.
- Plusle and Minun are a cute little novelty duo - they're little electric bunnies that get more powerful when they're together and are based off of magnets. Funnily enough, even the games themselves acknowledge that they're not fit for front-line fighting.
- This is made more obvious due to the fact their most prominent move is Helping Hand, a move that boosts the strength of their ally's next attack. Given how there's better and stronger Pokemon that know Helping Hand, you're really better off leaving Plusle and Minun as cheerleaders that are far away from the actual battle. They can't get hurt that way.
-
#313 - 314: Volbeat and Illumise
Type:
Ability (Volbeat): Illuminate (1st) / Swarm (2nd) / Prankster (Hidden)
Ability (Illumise): Oblivious (1st) / Tinted Lens (2nd) / Prankster (Hidden)
Appearances:
Stats of Volbeat: 430 (65, 73, 75, 47, 85, 85)
Stats of Illumise: 430 (65, 47, 75, 73, 85, 85)
Additional forms?: N/A
Thoughts:
- Volbeat and Illumise are definitely winners when it comes to looks. They're the firefly Pokemon - Volbeat looks perpetually grumpy while Illumise is practically asking for someone to draw a cute anime girl version of them.
- Access to Prankster is nice, but when you have Pokemon like Whimsicott and Klefki out there... yeah, tough luck.
-
(Only 488 more to go! ... Oh man, this is gonna be really clutch if I somehow manage to get these all out before the year ends.)
