    does anyone know where i can get a server that runs on my comp? i tried abyss web server but i didnt get it to work... thanks

    It helps to know what kinda of connection you have, what kind of OS you have...


    I'm pretty sure Apache would work for ya.


    (And just to let you know, a server kills you connection and really tears down on your computer)

    First you have to cheak with your ISP. You can get in a lot of trouble with your ISP if it doesn't allow you to run a server. Also it isn't a good idea since it will be really slow. There are also sercuity holes you will have to worry about and hackers. You'll need to leave your computer on all day and you'll need at least a Gig of RAM. So running a server on your computer is not a smart idea.

    Now for running a server for your own testing purposes, you probally won't have to worry about most of the above things.

    But I think Apache runs on Windows, so try that.
     
    Yeah, Apache runs on Windows, but not to its full extent or something like that. I installed it so I could test PHP things without having to spend all that extra time uploading pages just to see if things worked. o.o;
     
    So it does run? Wasn't quite sure on that. ^^;

    Methinks I'm gonna install Apache on my computer... if I ever get enough space. :P
     
    Ok, FIrst off, i have my own server and along with PPN i can help you here.

    First off talk to your ISP, you will need some sort of switchbox to switch from server to computer. Second off you will need a firewall router, it will help you keep the server running. Windows 98 will not work on a server, and Cable isn't that fast for it. I suggest Linux feora Redhat and at LEAST a T1 connection.

    Now, then you have to thing about installation and OS for the server. Will it be running a WHM and cPanel, and are you willing to pay $1500/yr for this OS. What kind of server are you looking for? What speed, but another thing.. what do you need it for? You do'nt have a big site that takes up alot of BW, and a server costs and arm and a leg, so basically, you should just buy hosting, it would be good enough for you.

    And a 256k upload speed is -okay- for a server, you can get a somewhat decent connection to others. But you'll want a real fast one if you want to get happy visitors.

    I said H E L L nothing else lol.. I'm not sure. I think its like 1022/512 so about 1mb/s. Its pretty quick. But I wouldn't host a server on Cable. T1 at minimum

    I have a stable server running on 256k upload, so meh. And people on cable can get a good 30 kbs download speed, so I'm content with that. ^^;
     
    my cabel is 100MPS and i got Knoppix and Redhat running on my servers int he basement but i gotta ask my ISP first
     
    Ok.. Your saying all of you have a $5000 server? Because i do'nt think you guys understand what a server is.

    A server is a supercomputer that runs sites. they cost alot and need special running gear to work.
     
    i bulit mine. i got a 20gb harddrive 100 mps connection redhat linux and a server software
     
    A server is simply a computer that's conected to the internet so that people are able to download stuff directly from the computer. To have a decent server, you need a good connection and a big harddrive.

    It doesn't have to be a "supercomputer".
     
    Well, if your looking at hosting a fast site, or something like that the best option is a fast server "super computer", but i guess your right.

    20gig HD? thats not much... lol mines a dual 120gig. So 340gig.. :)
     
    Why would you even need that much for a site?

    I have a 120 gig and I doubt I'll ever use 50 of those...

    ...unless of source I use up 100 of 'em for storage. XP Burning takes tooo long.
