Let us play the games in English...but choose to have the Japanese names for places, people and pokemon

you'd have more options under "Options"
    Text styles
    Pokemon: English/Japanese
    People: English/Japanese
    Places: English/Japanese

some of the Japanese names sound a lot better for the Pokemon and cities

then play it with the names in English

    that's why it's an option

But if you're going to have the option to use the Japanese names, then what's the point of localizing the names in English, French, German, etc? It would make more sense to just leave all the Japanese names as the official name and not bother localizing Pokemon, people, or towns in any other language.

because people like you want them localized, so they'll be localized for people like you, but people who prefer the original names will also have it their way

    Creator: Let's call it Fushigidane
    English: Well...little kids can't pronounce that, let's call it...Bulbasaur

"People like me"? I never said I wanted them localized. I said it'd defeat the point of localization. And I've seen members here that aren't considered kids that can't even spell Bulbasaur, Darkrai, and various other Pokemon, which is similar to pronunciation. Plus, it'd be confusing for other people. One person might use the localized names, and the other person might use Japanese names. You can't expect everyone to know both names, or more in the case of other languages. Maybe for a handful of Pokemon, sure. I know Japanese and English names for quite a few, but you can't expect children to do so. It's better off just leaving it as is. If you want to use foreign names of Pokemon, that's fine. But by giving us that option, you're creating a potential language barrier for players.

what if it was strictly game side?

in-game, they're whatever you want it to be, and when you go to a Union room or whatever, then it's...whatever, localized or something

But if you went in the WiFi room and it used the opposite of what you used, it'd be confusing. I mean, I'm not trying to shoot down your idea (I like Japanese names more, usually), but I just see it as causing confusion among gamers.

perhaps multiple WIFI rooms to choose from?

    Japanese, English, [other region here]

only main problem I see there is mixing in different languages, like a german going into the Japanese room...

The games are made in a number of languages though, so that'd call for a lot of wifi rooms, sadly. :(

You could always just name Pokémon by their original name you know. Bulbasaur's name might not fit, but there are plenty that would.

    your sig...what is that from?

and yeah, I could, main problem is that I might have to rename it
I usually do it for Legendaries and single stage evos

Keep in mind that all the games already auto localize foreign Pokemon as well. You get a Fushigane from Japan and it becomes Bulbasaur unless its nicknamed. They didn't localize them cause fan's couldn't pronounce the names, it was to give a unique name sake per region that would be easily identified to the culture's dialogue. Bulbasaur isn't really any easier to say than Fushigane, but Bulbasaur sticks easier cause we know what a Bulb is and what a Dinosaur is (the two words that make up Bulbasaur's name as well as two ways to describe it)

I've seen children pronounce some of the Japanese names better than the English names and then there are the Pokemon whose names don't change like Groudon, Kyogre, Rayquaza, Palkia, Dialga, Arcues, Mewtwo, Pikachu, ect.

It would be interesting because I also like a few of the originally translated names over some of the localized names (Washibon > Rufflet, Washibon sounds so much cuter too), but I agree that it would be a pointless endeavor to add in. That's a LOT of useless code to put in that could very well take away from the game performance.

sad truth...well, for now, guess I'm sticking to nicknames

    Wargle, for one thing

That would kind of ruin the point of localizing names.
I think ruin is a little bit of a strong word to use in this context... nevertheless, I understand your concerns. It could probably work if it was, like, an unlockable feature. Maybe as a 'reward' for beating the Elite Four for the first time? I probably wouldn't use it myself, but I imagine that other people would really enjoy going through all of these new places and looking at their Japanese names. And it would have to be an option - definitely not a compulsory thing as, yeah, that would probably piss a lot of people off.
