4th Gen A guide to chaining

CAUTION: N00BY QUESTION ALERT. How do you reset the rader? I took a wild guess and walked 50 steps without leaving the grass/stepping in a patch and when I used the radar again, my chain broke.

How did it broke, after walking at least 50 steps and using the radar again, it should reset new patchs, not break them. Thats weird... unless you reseted and ran into a similar looking patch that had a different pokemon from your chain, without noticing that you did, that breaks it obviously.

Hey, ShadowTails, just wanted to thank you for the guide, and was wondering, should I start out just doing Starlys? And, is there a certain limit to how many steps I can take from where I started the Pokeradar?

I'm still researching how many steps, I think it's 4 away from a patch, as long as one of the patches that shook is still on screen it should be fine. I haven't had time to check, but I'll get to it... I accidentally walked over too far and lost my Bagon chain, I'm trying to get a Shiny Adamant/Jolly one, but I'm looking and I'll get back to you as soon as possible.

Is it the farther away the patch you walk into the more likely its going to break from common patches, that you run into, either though its the same patch?

From what I know, further the patch isn't bad, it's usually good, it just depends on luck some times.

Well i guess thats always true, i've been chaining for starlys, and if i go to the furthest patch im more likely to run into one, but if its not furthest, i get those damn bidoofs again. ^-^

Thank you very much man, this is so much help!

6 away from a patch... tested today... thats when the patch goes offscreen and it ends the streak

I got a Shiny Adamant Starly once. Thanks for the guide though. Edit: I used the Pokeradar to get the Shiny Adamant Starly.

I seem to suck at chaining. :( The highest I ever got was 11...

It takes practice, I'd suggest starting on a swarm Pokemon.

ok, I'll try right now, the swarm is cubone.
a problem I have is when I kill something, only one patch of grass will shake sometimes, and it's right next to me, and looks nothing like the one I am trying to get a streak of.

You have to keep walking back and forth and keep resetting the radar until you get a total of four patches that are shaking, then walk into the one that's farthest away, as long as it is 4 or more spots away from you, then you should get a good streak going. :)

ugh im a little angry at myself right now X_x

I was chaining machop today... got the shiny at 43 (after using 70-80 repels on the several chains before that and that one (30 alone above 40)), and then I kept going... didn't get another shiny by 66 (which made me angry) and to make it worse 66 is my 3rd place record... needless to say my streak ended on a geodude :(

Usually when I get to 40 I reset for a shiny patch, then most of the time I can get another one on 41, otherwise I usually just go up to the next 5 and reset for a bit.

yeah the ironic thing was just before I reset and saw the patch that I was going to walk into I said to myself that I was going to reset until I saw a shiny so I could atleast appear on my records for my effort... sadly I seemed to forget what I told myself right before that... ah well I'll do that next time

>_< I am mad, I chained Buneary all day yesterday, got up to 40 twice and I got no shiny patches after like a few hours of reseting... I never saw any shiny patches.

shiny patches can end your streak but only if they are in corners or near edges...

determined that on my oddish streak the other day

Hmm... I got that when I found my second Shiny Bronzor, odd because it wasn't in a corner it was just right above a tree... the tile below it didn't have any grass, but it was just by itself.

I'm still not too impressed that I chained Buneary for nothing.
