"A Tale of Tinsel"
"...and this one goes right here..." a brown haired boy muses as he hangs a red and silver ball ornament on a Christmas tree before calling down to some other children with similar features "Okay, I think we're ready for tinsel!"
"Here you are, Forest." a black haired girl smiles as she hands the boy some gold tinsel.
"Thanks, Dawn." Forest replies as he drapes some tinsel over a branch.
"Ash, where does tinsel come from?" a younger girl asks a black haired boy as she hangs some ornaments.
"The tinsel factory, maybe?" Ash replies, a note of frustration in his voice as he untangles a strand of lights.
"Actually, you have a group of Spinaraks to thank for tinsel, if Johto lore is to be believed." an older male voice interjects.
Forest looks up and smiles as he sees an older boy with similar features enter the room. "What did a bunch of Spinaraks have to do with tinsel, Brock?" he wonders as he climbs off the stool he his standing on.
"Yeah, tell us!" another boy agrees.
"If you need a break from decorating the tree, I'll tell you." Brock assures the children. The children abandon the boxes of ornaments, lights, and tinsel and crowd around an easy chair as Brock sits down in it. Ash and Dawn, meanwhile, keep working, but listen intently as they inspect the children's work.
Once everyone is quiet, Brock begins. "The story goes that long ago in Johto, in a part of Johto whose name is lost to us, there was a family that lived in a cabin in a forest not far from a town. The family was very kind to all they met, and so they had many visitors--the two children's classmates, townsfolk, friends of the mother and the father, and when the weather turned cold, millions and millions of Spinaraks and Ariados that scuttled about the nooks and crannies of the house to escape the snow and biting wind."
Suddenly, Ash sees movement on the wall out of the corner of his eye, and looks at the wall, only to find nothing there. Figuring he was only seeing things, he gives a strand of lights to a yellow mouse creature to hang.
"Now, one Christmas Eve, everyone was finishing up their preparations." Brock continues, stifling a giggle over Ash studying the wall. "The mother was baking gingerbread and roasting a Combusken for Christmas dinner, and the father was out shoveling the walkway so well wishers could get to the house on Christmas morning. The children, meanwhile, were decorating the Christmas tree with lights, ornate balls, holly, and pine cones."
"Just like we're doing!" a girl smiles.
"Only we don't have holly nor pinecones..." Forest sighs.
"Later that night, the mother shooed the rest of the family upstairs so she could finish cleaning the house." Brock continues. "Once sure her family members were in bed for the night, she went to the closet and took out her biggest broom. The Spinaraks, who had been keeping warm by the fire, hurried back to the crevices, nooks and crannies of the house, for they feared that broom. If they weren't careful, they would be swept away with all the other dust and dirt."
Ash, however, has abandoned the Christmas tree and is studying a tiny Spinarak crawling across the wall. To squish or not to squish, that is the question...
"So, as the mother swept the floor and cleaned the drapes and furniture, the Ariados cautioned the Spinaraks to stay with them until all was well." Brock continues. "Once sure the house was clean as it could be, the mother put away her broom and went upstairs, the Spinaraks and Ariados watching all the while. When she fell into a deep sleep, the Ariados figured that the coast was clear, and they all came out from their hiding places."
Just then, Brock is jolted from his tale with a WHAP!!! "What was that?" Dawn asks, concerned.
"Tried to squish a Spinarak on the wall, but it got away." Ash explains. With that, he returns to the tree, figuring the Spinarak is gone.
"Now, where was I?" Brock muses. "Oh...The Spinaraks and Ariados saw the Christmas tree and the stockings, and spent many hours exploring the lights and decorations. Before long, they too fell asleep. Santa came not long after that, but as he was delivering the toys and gifts for the family, he was shocked to find cobwebs all over the Christmas tree!"
"Did the Spinaraks get in trouble?" a boy asks.
"No...Santa was puzzled at first, but when he saw all the Spinaraks and Ariados sleeping with happy smiles on their faces, he figured that they had wanted to help the family get ready for Christmas. As far as he was concerned, the Spinaraks and Ariados were part of the family too." Brock continues, unaware that the Spinarak Ash tried to squish earlier is hanging from the ceiling over the tree, spinning an ornate design. "So with a little Christmas magic, Santa transformed the cobwebs into streams of tinsel of many colors before continuing on his way. When everyone awoke on Christmas morning, everyone, including the Spinaraks and Ariados, gasped in amazement at how beautiful the tree looked. The mother told all the townsfolk about the sparkling tinsel, and ever since then, we decorate our Christmas trees with tinsel to remember those Spinaraks and Ariados that discovered the magic of Christmas...the end." he concludes.
Dawn then gasps when she spots what looks like a huge cobweb over the tree. "Look!"
Everyone darts over to the tree and looks up. "Me-rra?" one girl attempts to decipher the swirly writing in the silk.
"Merry Christmas! The cobweb says Merry Christmas!" Forest gasps.
"Do we have our own Christmas Spinarak too?" a girl wonders.
Just then, the Spinarak descends and lands in Ash's hand. "Oh, so you wanted to help decorate too?" Ash asks it. "Okay.." he smiles as he sets it down on another chair. "I'm sorry I tried to squish you earlier." he apologizes as he pets it.
"Well..." Brock smiles at the girl. "I believe we do."
