Otonashi and Kanade didn't even really belong together; it just came out of nowhere.

Kanade stole Yuri both the show and the guy. In the end Yuri ended up alone and two other major characters (Hinata and Otonoshi) got themselves a partner. Truly a great way to screw your series protagonist.
