Well...I can read both hiragana and katakana since those are just plain easy. (Just memorise them and you're set...seriously, anyone can do it.) Sadly, my vocabulary isn't up to par with my reading...so I can tell you what it says, but I won't be able to tell you what it means. XD; I can read about 100-150 kanji, give or take a few, but when it comes to actually writing them...I don't know nearly as much. ;_;'
Speaking the language is a whole other story...I'm okay with the written language, but I'm not good at picking it up by ear or physically speaking it. Unlike French, I've only been learning Japanese in a school setting for about 2.5 years now--and even then it's only on Saturdays, so I don't get nearly as much practise as I'd like since there's no one I know who speaks the language natively other than my actual teacher and I don't have time for anime, etc. anymore...so that's definitely got a hindering effect on my fluency. :\ I probably couldn't get by if I were to go to Japan right now. I need a lot more practise before I could be at all useful in the country.
I'm currently in my last year of [high school] Japanese, so hopefully by the end of it I'll be better with translating it, etc. But for speaking, I'm going to have to either look into conversational lessons or find someone with whom I can speak on a regular basis or something to bump up that fluency level. <_<;; (I've never been really good at *speaking* other languages though...much better with the written language. XP)
I used to be oh-so-obsessed with all things Japanese and the like, but over the past few years that's worn off. I'm still interested, but I don't care nearly as much as I used to. I'm still planning a trip to Japan with a few friend at the end of high school but I doubt I'll live there or anything like my plans were a while ago. (I wanted to teach English in Japan but...that's so...clich?d. XD Plus, it'd involve kids and I hate them so...blah.)
