They get zapped by this "reddish light"(actually a naughty 4 year old kid with a super strong laser pointer)which hurts the pokemon so much that the pokemon shrinks into thin air!

Do you mean when he tried to get in Erika's gym? In that case, so he could battle Erika without her knowing that it's him who she met and figured out he hated perfume, and so do eye XP it's nasty. Or, he thought he looked good in a blonde wig and wanted to show everyone in the gym.

Why do pokemon only say their names, growl or screech?
 
Mudkip! Because all he had to do was put the fire out of Charizard's tail, then Charizard realizes that the fire on his tail is out, so he Fire Blast's his tail, which hurts himself so much that he fainted...
