The value of a pokemon is dependent on it's demand.
IF every one want's a shiny mewtwo, then your shiny Mewtwo can possibly fetch a couple of strong, eved pokes and items.
But since few people demand specific shinies such as Buizel, you might only get another shiny or some items for trade.

You can trade before getting the national dex. I know this because when my friend got Pearl I gave her a cyndaquil almost right at the start. I believe you only need one badge to trade any pokemon.
