I never really noticed it until I uploaded my current avatar, but even if you link from a hosting site like Imgur that supports it, transparency is not kept, and alpha values are automatically changed to white (or the nearest color if semi-transparent).

Is there a way that transparency could be allowed with avatars? I mean, it's allowed with signatures and images contained within threads, why not avatars?

It is. If you see, mine is transparent. :) If you upload something bigger than the limits of your avatar size, it'll resize it and add a white background. I'm not sure if linking to it on Imgur causes it to lose transparency but if resizing it to within your limits doesn't work I suggest saving it and uploading it yourself as well.

I personally think it's better to resize an avatar to whatever your available limits are. I've noticed that if you let PC resize the avatar, versus resizing the avatar yourself, there's some loss of quality. This is just me being picky probably, but it's just a thought. :)
