Serious Black History Month

The month of February draws to a close, and what a month it has been! There have been many holidays to celebrate this month from Lunar New Year to Valentine's Day, and I think here in Off-Topic we have kept that spirit of festivity and love alive and well. In my country February is also Black History Month, and I would like to add to Off-Topic a thread for recognition and celebration of the achievements of African people and their descendants. During this time of year we celebrate both contemporary and historical people of great significance to us.

While Black History Month was first observed in the United States, it is recognized in multiple countries of the world, and this thread is intended to show appreciation for black people in all places of the world, Africa, Europe, the Americas, Asia, you name it!

You do not have to be black to give some love and appreciation to your black brothers and sisters. It's a holiday meant to be a time of tolerance and education where everyone is welcome to participate, celebrate and learn.

If there is an inspirational figure to you who is black, please share here! They can be politicians, activists, heads of state, scientists, psychologists, astronauts, inventors, artists, actors, writers, musicians, athletes, business people, reporters, philosophers, spiritual leaders, educators, anybody whose story or contributions you admire.

I personally have always loved Martin Luther King, for his message of inclusivity and universal love, and the inspiration he drew from Gandhi to lead a nonviolent civil Rights movement, and how he took a stance against war and strove to lift people out of poverty. Bishop Desmond Tutu is another hero of mine.

A black writer whose work I enjoy is James Baldwin. He has great psychological study of characters, colorful language and reflective social commentary. He was also a great thinker and debater, and offers a unique perspective into the civil rights movement as black man who was gay.

Who are some individuals from the black community who have had a strong impact on you?
