Not sure if this is supposed to go in here or Misc. Hoping here's alright.

As some of you have probably noticed by now, Bulbagarden is down. We seem to have suffered a Direct Denial of Service attack. At this point in time, the main suspect is a person going by the name of Ph34r, a known wiki vandal who had hit Wiktionary and the Mozilla Community wiki before deciding for some reason to target Bulbapedia. This is something much larger scale than he's ever done before though, so we cannot be totally certain that he was involved. We also have no idea what the motive of this person could possibily be. If it was some site politics, it'd make a lot more sense, but there's nothing to tie this person to any site at all. It seems we were just the unlucky targets of a random bastard.

Bulbagarden *will* be back....but we don't know when as yet. We're currently talking to our hosting people, and I'll be posting more news as the situation develops.

    hmmm,sorry for being ignorant...but whos bulbagarden?n wats it?cant express mroe detail?sorry XD

Bulbagarden is a Pok?mon website run by Archaic. The link is in his signature.

Anyway, that Ph34r guy is annoying. He'll (hopefully) get bored soon, and go away. =\ Until then... I'm not sure what to suggest.

Oh, and I believe this thread belongs in General Discussion, which is a subforum of Webbies. :P

ooo...sigh...they are a lot abd guys on the net de...maybe too free, nothing to do.... X(

    Archaic, try to remember that all website discussion belongs in the 'webbies' section ^^;

IF and only IF you are on a Linux Server (with cPanel) I may be able to save you! First, get that prick's IP adress. THEN Go into cPanel and click IP DENY. Then put his IP into IP deny, and it will be denied from the server. Assuming its on a shared server, this will prevent the PH34R from accessing ANY of the server. Next, IP Ban him on Wiki software (whatverver you use). My friends site, also got hit with by Ph34r. He did what I told him and had no probs

Imakuni? the cPanel IP ban is usually useless, the people doing something like this are usually runing proxying/rotating/etc IP address's. I've had it happen when the former RPG on my site got destoyed, reporting the fake IP's are ususally useless, I got lucky cause when the person returned to the site he got sloppy and used his real IP adress and I was able to get rid of him for awhile.

That is why you use a Proxy Detector

edit- post the IP and I will use NetTo0lz to ping and then trace it.

How depressing. Oh well, hope Bulbagarden comes back to life soon...

That fscking sucks. I really hope things will get cleared up soon. We'll still have all the threads up, right...? Line Inspiration was going so well.

nice try but he's launched a DDoS against bmg / bmgf.. 1000's of random IP's using normal http requests... can't do squat about them :(

I knew something was up when I got that account has been suspended message when I tried to get into Bulbagarden.

I really hate now being at BMG. That place was the first ever Pokemon Forum I ever signed up at. So, that site has a lot of sentimental value to me.

There must be something that can be done. I know we managed to weather the storm when this happened to us back in 2003, on our old hosts.

But it will be back up soon, right?

EDIT: It can't be that hard to get it back up, can it? I mean, it's just "suspended" not 'destroyed". Please say yes...

Don't worry, nothing has happened to the actual data. The whole suspended thing is just so he doesn't crash the server and harm all the other sites on there. The worst a DDoS can do is eat up bandwidth. We'll be back soon enough.

Welcome back BG. Hope you are able to take some action against that Ph34r guy. Who hosts you BTW?

*Points up* As you may have guessed from Steve's post, PPN is our host currently. We used to be on our own dedicated server, but it ended up being cheaper in the end to go off a shared server. I don't even want to remember what we used to pay.
