in fire red, is it possible to change the default names for the male/female player characters? can you make there be only one default name like in some of the other games rather than a list of them?

It is definately possible for all games, but FR i already know how to do it, you would insert the text somewhere and modify the pointer.

Yes, the default names can be changed through the use of a hex editor. Just open the desired game in the hex editor, then search for one of the names -- the rest will be around it. After finding the names, use the hex editor to make the desired changes. ;)

This is a way of making it work, but it can limit how long the names will be, that is why you should rather modify the pointer to go to a different name.
