Can you battle between dpp and hg,ss?

Hey, so my little brother just got Soul silver for his birthday and I only have Emerald and diamond versions.

Is it possible to battle between sinnoh and johto? and if so whats required? something like the ruby and saphire was needed in fr/lg?

All 4th generation games can battle together, you don't need anything extra.

Ok, how long till we can battle? on his game it wont let him do wireless battles yet.

does he need some gym badges or something? because I got some low level teams together for him to test his power against me.
