4th Gen Can't decide.

Fire not so much.

but Chimchar is useful against Roark when it learns mach punch

I am not a big fire type fan, I liked Blaziken, because he was also Fighting. Which fit him into my Weirdling group. I know Chimchar does as well become fighting once he hits Monferno, but my kid is going to pick Chimchar, so I want to pick one of the other two, as I can just get an egg from him later on.

But thank you for the opinion on Chimchar.

I started with torterra. For in game he was awesome. Somehow when i first went in to the E4 he was almost lvl 80 He can kill Drapion but nothin else for the first e4. Although if you train a Staraptor this won't be a problem. The next one just kill quagsire, whiscash, sudowoodo, and golem with a grass att. I prefer wood hammer to leaf storm because of its - effects. plus torterra has hp to spare. earthquake works pretty well on Hippowdon. The next guy is fun. You may think fire oh no but w8. Earthquake the rapidash, infernape, and steelix. Crunch the drifblim. And just kill the lopunny. Now Crunch mr.mime, alakazam, and girafarig. Earthquake medicham, and figure out how to kill brongzong. Only fire effects him greatly so just try to kill him. Now the champ is easy. Couple atts takes out spiritomb, grass att milotic and gastradon. Garchomp is a pain but if you have ice or dragon then your fine otherwise just kill it.earthquake both roserade and lucario.Make sure you have ethers or an elixer. Hope i helped.

actually, someone confirm this, but i think that the fact that he is water/steel makes it so the attack is only regularly effective
Ground is 2x effective, Electric is 2x effective, fighting is 2x effective, fire and grass are normally effective, and the rest are not very effective except Poison which isn't effective at all.

As for starters, pick which one you think will do the best... I picked Turtwig even though I didn't like him the first time I saw him (when the game was still in japan and they were announcing new Pokemon, I thought just about all the new Pokemon looked weird, but I realized they're actually cool and good to use in battle), but when I looked again I was like "I have to choose him for my starter Pokemon."

You should just start of with chimchar.

Honestly, Empoleon is the worst starter of them all. Go with Torterra. Empoleon... He's just too slow to sweep, and his defenses are too poor to tank. He's also got a cruddy movepool. So... Yeah. Torterra FTW.

Piplup is way better and easier to progress through the game.

Let's analyze that statement.

Roark: Can be bested by all three starters.
Gardenia: Chimchar has the advantage. Turtwig is neutral. Piplup is bested here.
Maylene: No one really has the advantage here. If Prinplup has Peck, he'll kind of have an easier time.
Crasher Wake: Grotle's got the upperhand.
Fantina: Nobody really has the advantage here, either.
Byron: Infernape and Empoleon have the advantage, but Torterra isn't too hateful, either.
Candice: Infernape has the advantage. Torterra fails. Piplup is neutral.
Volkner: Torterra. has the definite advantage here. Earthquake will cream Raichu and Luxray, and electric attacks have nothing on him. Infernape is neutral, and even though he's part Steel, Empoleon fails. :x

ELITE FOUR:

Aaron: Torterra won't be very useful here, but neither will Empoleon.
Bertha: Empoleon and Torterra can both beat her, and quite easily, too.
Flint: Empoleon wins here, but Torterra can Earthquake Flint's team without getting hurt too badly by Fire.
Lucian: Nobody wins here, really. Infernape, however, loses.
Cynthia: Each starter can own at least one of her Pokemon, so it really doesn't matter much :x

So let's tally.

Turtwig and Evos: 4
Piplup and Evos: 5
Chimchar and Evos: 5.

So technically, Turtwig is the worst. If you're thinking type advantage. However, when thinking stats, Piplup still has a crappy stat total and movepool. :\
