A deceptively simple trick I learned: Register for an account in Niantic's other game, Ingress, and pop it open for a moment just to peek at the map.

Those clusters of white-blue dots are where you're likely to fine Pokemon spawn points when you go back into Pokemon Go.
Use this to your advantage: learn where spawn points are in your area and track Pokemon much more efficiently when they're on Sightings.

Except those huge portals - those are gyms, and I don't know if gyms have spawn points.
But for example, Pokemon spawns can be found in those two spots to the upper-right of the portal, and that one spot where I am just below the portal.

Woah, neat! I've never actually thought to try this game. Is it any good?

I don't really know, I'm literally only using it for seconds at a time to check where clusters of dots are in the area.

My first impressions are that it's really complicated RIGHT away instead of being complicated at high-level play like Go is.
