Here are some of the advice I want to give to webmasters and especially forum owners of administrators

    1) BACKUP :: Always have a backup of your site in your computer and not the C drive or whichever is your windows drive because if the server goes down, along with it so will your site. Though most of the High-level control panels provide backup facilities, my recommendation is to have on in your home computer and a CD Rom-Drive if possible.

    2) UPDATION :: Make sure you code new pages in your home, view it with a Browser to check if it is correct and then upload it to the server.

    3) IMAGES :: Whenever you upload images be sure that they are as small as possible. Try saving the images in 4 or 5 formats like JPEG, BMP, GIF, PNG and see which occupies the least space.

    4) LAYOUT :: Always remember to select layouts such that they are best viewed in 800x600, but at the same time give some importance to other resolutions too.

    5) If you are a guy who has absolutely no job and want your website to be on top of every search engine, try making your site fully HTML using as little PHP as possible.

    6) Don?t just try to popularize your site if you only have Pokemon Games and Movie info. Around 250 sites in the net have the same stuff, so try making your site as different as possible. Specialize in another field like Digimon, Fake Sprites, Pen Pals or just about anything (not webmastering).

    7) CUTENEWS :: Cutenews is an excellent script which allows you to enter news as fast as possible and it?s really simple to use. You need not have that much HTML Knowledge to use it and it can easily be edited to suit your web layout. Also if you do not have a comments page, please remove the Cute news Link called comments, it looks horrible if all the comments pages lead to 404 errors.

    FORUMS

This single point is the main reason why I opened this thread. Nowadays we see more than 1000 Pok?mon forums, but how many of them actually make it to the top? Very few. Only a few Pokemon forums like PC, PE2K, Pokemasters & Seribii are flourishing today while others are lying in the dirt trying to emulate the bigwigs.

My Say is, don?t create a forum just for your site, if possible. Try affiliating with other growing forums out there or combine with webmasters whose sites don?t have forums and make joint ones. Never ever beg for members bribing them with mod positions, that will never work. Merge forums. If you are forum has only 20-30 members, don?t just stand there, merge it. Try combining more than 2 forums so that the joint result may even shake the big wigs.

If you badly want to start a forum for your site alone, my recommendation is always Vbulletin ? the best forum ever. After starting your forum, try getting community sites, as that?s the way to make your forum grow. If you can?t get a VB, get a MyBB or PHPBB or IPB and change the skin to something attractive.

I hope after reading this, you understand about forums and start merging yours.

Hope this helps atleast some of you

this is great advice cc and should proberly be sticked?

Thats great advice CC,and yeah it should be stickied.

I don't think it needs to be stickied, because it's merely personal opinion.

    Backup good.
    2) UPDATION :: Make sure you code new pages in your home, view it with a Browser to check if it is correct and then upload it to the server.
View it in Firefox and IE and make sure it's vaild XHTML.
    3) IMAGES :: Whenever you upload images be sure that they are as small as possible. Try saving the images in 4 or 5 formats like JPEG, BMP, GIF, PNG and see which occupies the least space.
Use PNG. GIF is now outdated because the people who made the rendering engine now requires people to pay them to make GIFs and PNG is to replace it. JPEG is good for photos and BMP waste too much space for the low quailty and it's Microsoft.
    4) LAYOUT :: Always remember to select layouts such that they are best viewed in 800x600, but at the same time give some importance to other resolutions too.
I recommend making your layout with the width of 779.
    5) If you are a guy who has absolutely no job and want your website to be on top of every search engine, try making your site fully HTML using as little PHP as possible.
Using PHP is good for websites. To make the PHP search engine friendly, use mod_rewrite. It make something like:
    https://secretgamers.com/final/star/http.php
    Into:
    https://secretgamers.com/something/http.html
or whatever. That's how big sites do it to make their PHP site to be search engine friendly.
    6) Don?t just try to popularize your site if you only have Pokemon Games and Movie info. Around 250 sites in the net have the same stuff, so try making your site as different as possible. Specialize in another field like Digimon, Fake Sprites, Pen Pals or just about anything (not webmastering).
    Unique is good.

Cutenews sucks. Wait for my awsome news script with custom fields!

If you want a forum, start with a small amount of forums, like 10. Even 10 is pushing, but do start out with hundreds of forums. Never use vB, use either phpBB or wait for my awsome forum script.

Just wondering, why 779? Does 780 stretch the screen on 800*600 ressolution? Because I always make my layouts with a 780 width, and just want to know if I should make them smaller...

I don't know actually. I saw it on a tutorial to make layouts and that's what I always used. I guess 780 would be okay too.

Umm...Bold Text is what I wrote.

If you have your own server have RAID. Yeah. If not get a host that does back-ups too and do your own. You could do it on a Flash-Drive because they're cheap and big enough for a site, but don't yell at me. I've never tried it.

    2) UPDATION :: Make sure you code new pages in your home, view it with a Browser to check if it is correct and then upload it to the server.

View it with several browsers such as Firefox and IE. Also check it after you upload it.

    3) IMAGES :: Whenever you upload images be sure that they are as small as possible. Try saving the images in 4 or 5 formats like JPEG, BMP, GIF, PNG and see which occupies the least space.

Never use bmp unless you are download something like a Desktop background for Windows. Be careful with PNG some older browsers don't support it.

    4) LAYOUT :: Always remember to select layouts such that they are best viewed in 800x600, but at the same time give some importance to other resolutions too.

Make your layout stretchable if possible, like with expandable tables. Like this very forum. (excluding certain layouts) Don't use flashy colors that hurt people's eyes and MAKE SURE THE TEXT IS READABLE ON ALL RESOLUTIONS!!! (Very important)

    5) If you are a guy who has absolutely no job and want your website to be on top of every search engine, try making your site fully HTML using as little PHP as possible.

No, PHP is good. Use it. And do that thing that Kip-Kip said earlier if you are concerned about that. Which you shouldn't be since there are other ways to advertise.

    6) Don?t just try to popularize your site if you only have Pokemon Games and Movie info. Around 250 sites in the net have the same stuff, so try making your site as different as possible. Yes, be creative, make up your own stuff!

Cutenews sonunds sucky to me of course I like to do things myself a lot so I'd write my own news script but that's me and not one of those newbies who don't know how.

To be a good site you need interaction and input from your members. A forum is one of the better ways, but there are others. Oekaki is one, a shout box, polls, blogs, etc. Make up your own if you want to be creative!

Didn't help me much except what Kip-Kip said about the whole search engine HTML thing.

    So pretty much...we should just wait around until Kip-kip finds time to make these scripts that are labeled awesome before they're even done? v.v;

CuteNews PWNS! Its user-friendly interface, combined with uber-easy posting/editing/templating/etc makes it the current top choice for automated news.

PHP rox, so, don't diss the PHP. It's much better than HTML, and really is more flexible too. Search engines should get used to it *shrugs*.

Merging forums is a good idea IMO. Anyone want to merge or accepting Community sites?

Interesting points CC, nice of you to compile all this advice ^^

Yes. They are awsome because they will offer things scripts have never, or at least the popular ones, done. Use Cutenews, than mine when they are done. Pretty much it's promotion of my stuff. :classic:
PHP isn't a bit releated to XHTML. PHP, ASP.NET, ColdFusion, etc. are server side programming languages. XHTML is browser side scripting meaning the browser processes XHTML, like Javascript. XHTML is not a programming language. So they can not be compared by saying one "rocks" over another. But yes, PHP is much better tha what's out there.

That's what I was referring too. PHP coding is much better than using strictly HTML. I know the difference between them. v.v

PHP is also better than HTML in some ways, such as <----variablewhatnot----> things, as PHP handles it much better. They can be compared in some aspects.

I don't think it needs to be stickied either though some of this could be added to Razzy's Guide.

@KK :: Dude, we can't wait all year long just for your so-called SPECIAL SCRIPTS to comeout. So we choose the best available.

    1) PNG is really good but takes more space sometimes. My current banner is 220KB in PNG and 104 in GIF. This makes a huge difference while loading up doesnt it.
    2) I know PHP rocks to the core and I do use it for my site and so does everybody else. But I merely recommended using HTML because they rank higher on search engines today and well, this could get your site helluva more visitors. Can you tell me how do I make my pages .html but still contain PHP.pages.
3)KK, I don't understand about forums - do you want people to have 20 forums?

@PDF, you have merely repeated what KK said.

Hope this helps people in some way!

    1) PNG may not always be smaller than GIF, but it allows images to be transparent, has a higher compression filter, and produces a better quaitity image. PNG should be smaller, but ..."some implementations [of the compression filter] make poor choices of filter methods and therefore produce unnecessarily large PNG files." ~Wikipedia.
    2) Use mod_rewrite . Make sure your host has it enabled. You do this in the .htaccess file. Very few sites, if any, that make it high on Google's list use pure XHTML. Most use the mod_rewrite thing for PHP to appear as XHTML files.
    3) By forums, I mean sections like Webmaster's and Computers.

My special scripts should be done by the end of this month. Should have been last month, but too many things got in the way.

I've just completed one of my special scripts (personal, but I can abstract it and customise for others, or we can integrate it into StarCMS Gary) and am working on the upload script.

I'm wondering - if we use an AddType in .htaccess to force all HTML pages to be parsed as PHP, will that help the search rankings? Probably not...

really, unless your site is formatted like index.php?id=blah, using php pages shouldnt hurt your search engine results any. most spiders mainly have problems with urls that have extra junk after the extension. thats why the googletap mod for phpnuke not only makes all the pages html, but the main point is that it turns urls such as modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=100 to something like Forums-topic100-title.html

That's what we're talking about with mod_rewrite. >_> That stuff is done by mod_rewrite, and we're saying you gotta do it to have the search rankings done properly. We almost all use index.php?id=blah at the moment.

Hmm...Interesting!! I'll keep an eye out for them. Do you really mean you programmed the script for a FORUM?

Anyway Search Engine SPIDERS find it easy to navigate to sites using .html, so if you mod_rewrite, you have a great chance of figuring on the top of the best search engines especially Google, Yahoo & MSN. Don't know about Lycos though.

    I worked out mod_rewrite! <333333 XD
