Here is where you can discuss the finale of the Kanto Grand Festival and the long awaited official rematch of May v. Drew in "Channeling the Battle Zone!".

    My review to come forthwith.

I've waited for this one, to see how May loses...Wait, she beat Drew?? That was really close...and she copied Taylor (I hope I got that right)...well, she did say it was like a Contest Battle X)

    And Drew STOLE MY IDEA!!!

About time Ash caught that Aipom...and now we go to the Battle Pyramid again...

Prepare for trouble--I mean, fun! (I still can't believe TR basically never came up except as an afterthought at the end...)

Well I really loved this episode. During the battle between May and Drew I was on the edge of my seat, practically yelling at my TV. May parents came in to see whats wrong. The fire spin bubble combo was very unique, and looked really cool with all thoose sparks coming off it. One of the funny things that caught my mind was when Harley said "I'm gonna wring her little neck with that bandana!!" that made me laugh sooo hard. Then of course, Ash catches Aipom. Not really a surprise but it was a cool moment. I do wish they'd shown us more of May vs Solidad. That would have been an interest battle to watch, but I guess they only wanted 3 GF episodes. Oh! I almost forgot... MAY BEAT DREW!! Finally, I had no idea she'd beat him. I thought for sure that he was going to beat her with that water pulse, but then she used Sky Uppercut. Ah yes, the joys of being a May fanatic. And it's about time Combusken learned overheat, I thought it'd never learn. One last thing, I'm glad we got to see more of Combusken. It was largley unused in Houenn, but started to be used more in BF. So, I'm glad it was in both of her GF battles.

I loved the battle. Drew actually lost to her... oo It surprised me, because I thought I remembered hearing that Drew one. It was nice that she won though... but it was a bummer she lost to Saori though.
Even though I figured that she would, I was HOPING May would win.

And her Combusken's Overheat was awesome! x3

This is probably one of my favorite episodes now. ^^
    I missed this one in Japanese, but I think that just made it easier to watch the dub that way, it made it better because things didn't bother me as much. ^^;;

And Omigod, May actually cried. *dies*
That was so sad... at least to me, I almost cried myself. xD Or at least got teary-eyed.
Mainly because I wasn't expecting it at ALL. She was all upset, but honestly, I never thought she'd cry like that. It ended up being a cute scene though!

I give her VA alot of points now. That was pretty darn good crying.

    *points at post times*

You were more than half an hour late. PC wasn't down THAT long.

XD Better luck next time! NOT!!

Drew: yeah, seeing May cry WAS surprising, but I was even more surprised that both Brock AND Ash tried to console her...I didn't think Ash was that smart...

I liked it but to me this felt really short for a Grand Festival. I mean I know that it was three episodes like the last one but this one felt really rushed. I was hoping it would be better.

I did like the battle between May and Drew. It was action back. I was a bit disappointed with Combusken learning Overheat though. To me Overheat is being overused and all with Torkoal and recently Charizard. To me the Combusken learning Overheat is just nothing impressive anymore. It has became as common like Flamethrower or Thunderbolt.

Also if you watch how Drew and May were battling you could foreshadow the future of a certain characters. Well two character for the ones that know what I am talking about. I don't want to spoil anything for people.

That was sad to see May cry. I mean she has lost before but I guess this one means a lot. She lost to another person. It was nice that Ash and Brock were able to confort her. It seems like Ash has mature a little doesn't it?

Another thing that is bothering me is the battle with May and Sarioi. It was too short. Still that was a bit sad because we really didn't get to see Sarioi really have a full battle. It was all just pieces of it.

Serves me right for being late. Heh. Like Reyna said, the pacing rather jars after the showdown with Drew (which was incredibly well done) and proving once again, the writers can't pace. While this isn't the first time they've pulled this (Groudon/Kyorge, the Silver Conference), this is the one time it's the most irritating. Of course, the most insulting is the fact May's match with Saori (I don't want to use her dub name) being woefully underwhelming as we see this budding Coordinator who pulls off an incredible victory against an established contender become a pathetic bumbler, whose Pokemon couldn't even launch one single attack.

Irony being that we know better with her. The ignomious battle itself started 20 minutes into the episode, so there was some time to pace out a mini-battle, alas, that wasn't meant to be.

Now, this isn't the first time a character becomes de-powered in order to promote another, but this is a bit crossing a line given all the build-up May has had and the focal point of the episode (success over Drew). Or, on the other hand, as we learned in May's first Contest: no matter what you do or how good you are, there are plenty of people are simply better. But unlike the first event, this one offers deeper shades of humilation, if only by what we were shown.

And of course, Saori, who like Tyson/Tetsuya, who wins the whole event. Unlike Tetsuya, who had proper separate coverage/characterization/pacing with his matches, she seems like she was created only compliment Drew and once that was explored, any traces to strengthen her character all but disappeared. That said, given her lack of turmoil, overwhelming strength, her charming looks, you could almost say she's a Mary Sue. Heck, even Morrison had more than that. Now, if she had another episode to explore herself rather than her relationship with Drew, then this defeat wouldn't be as hard to take.

Anything I want to further explain is laced with upcoming spoilers, so I'll wait. Either way, my top theory would be that this would be the sequel to the Silver Conference finale or simply, May's take on it: defeat the Big Bad rival, lose (but unlike Ash's loss as it was an cropped up, humilating way to go), and the episode would quickly dispatch with the finer details of the Festival. The following examples here would be a lack of exploration with the other trainers that washed out, an actual reason why the Rockets didn't perform their usual tricks given their infiltration, the fact Overheat is now the middle class Flamethrower and Torkoal further having the shaft, a Vivian/Lillian reunion, etc. One minor positive is the fact we have an actual winner here, nothing like the mysterious "Jon Dickson" (or whatever his Japanese name is, I think it's Toshiya?)

That all said, I don't come off that negative. The battle itself between May/Drew is excellently done with nice continuity (such as Ash remembering Tucker's fusion move), music, battle flow, Combusken and Squirtle proving themselves nicely, the resolution of the wandering Aipom (which deserves a separate heading), the voice cast finally getting comfortable in their roles (in this case, it would be the triangle: May, Harley, and Drew), and Brock -- who has supported her from the beginning -- and Ash -- who initially didn't as he focused on himself, but since rectified that -- providing more than fitting comfort. The latter scene was a nice homage to Ash's friends doing the same for him at the end of the Indigo Plateau arc. All in all, it offers several nice effects, but not enough for the dangling plot threads.

Another interesting point I forgot to mention is the fact the writers have given Ash yet another unexpected Pokemon during the arc. Just as he got the bizarre Glalie during the first Festival after only catching the Snorunt a handful of episodes before. Sorry I forgot that given all the parallels that's been thrown around with this Festival. Heh.

Complete with nice closure to the real focus of the Festival arc in the final minutes: Drew and May. Actually, if you ignore Saori, this arc would have turned out nicely. And even the dub fared well. Here is hoping the next Festival will have the continuity and pacing of the first and all the character building of the second.

This episode: 6/10. Great until the Saori battle.

The arc: 7/10. Nice focus on Drew and great growth on May, but other than that....

I completely forgot about the Fusion trick with Bubble and Fire Spin. It was a nice effect to see that happen then the refrence to Tucker made it even better. I love when they make refrence to old episodes.

Many great points there Dark Charaxes. I completely agree there on all. When you look at it this was just like a mini repeat of what happen to Ash back in the Indigo Championship and a little bit of the Silver Confrence. Still I would be much happier if they just gave the Grand Festival one more episode. A good battle against Sariori and then a quick send off like how it did with this one. A good final for what will happen later for May.

Still this episode to me is to help set up for what will happen in later episodes and much more. I am talking about what will happen many episodes from now and into the next saga. Both thinkgs I don't like but it is leading up to there.
