"Clefairy and the Moon Stone" Episode Discussion

Wow. 6 episodes in and they already get to a boring one.

There's a time when the scientist sounds like Meowth (Maddie Bluestien's not the one in this episode), kinda cute. Otherwise, I don't care about his voice.

Who else completly forgot for about 50 episodes Brock actually caught that Zubat? I'm sure the next time it appears is in "The Purr-fect hero" which is around the 50s.

I remembered, but I didn't really cared. Heh. Does that count?

Anyway, here's the episode comparison. Dogasu goes on characterization issues and a few dialogue and paint edits, respectively:

I'll get into my usual psychoanalysis later.

It was an OK episode. I didn't mind it, though I'd have to kind of agree somewhat with Jorah. It did get a bit dull at time. ;( Then again, I'm not complaining; cause, in my opinion, this seemingly "sort of boring" episode is nothing compared to the newer episodes nowadays (even the ones that the animators TRY to make exciting), lmao.

Really? This, honestly, has to be one of the most boring episodes ever. There was a thread a while ago and quite a few people mentioned this episode, so I'm not the only one who think so haha. It has to be one of the few Indigo League episodes I skip if I ever decide to watch it on TV.

I thought it was a great episode an I still like it because the anime makes Clef seem so mysterious.

I'm undecided on this episode. This episode showed Team Rocket as a threat. On the other hand, Jorah just reminded that Brock caught Zubat here. Poor Zubat. Then again, I can't even remember Golbat.

Yeah, I don't actually remember him with Golbat. I just remembered it also evolved into Crobat. How neglected.

This episode showed Team Rocket as a threat.

That's why I liked the episode so much, but more on that later.

This episode is important to me, as it's the first time I actually paid attention to game canon in the show. Being a Rockemaniac, I was expecting more than J/J/M, as Mt. Moon is the first encounter with the evil organization. So, I was disappointed by no team effort, vis-a-vis, the Grunts.

Of course, this is before I truly realized the writing pattern of the Team Rocket organization, thus I created a major letdown for myself later on. I'll discuss my epiphany in depth whenever that episode arrives.

However, J/J/M did an excellent job fending for themselves here. We see the start of their usual underhanded tactics (smokescreens and absconding with the item du jour) and Koffing fought back hard with Counter on Onix and Meowth almost had Misty, as well. They almost succeeded, weren't for the deus ex machina that is Clefairy's Metronome.

On top of that, there was a very intriguing exchange (probably, my favorite in the whole series):

Jessie (to Ash): You're just jealous, boy.

James: Because we won't let you join us.

Interesting they viewed their enemy that way, as that's the line of thought we've seen in the games, Pokemon Special -- proselytize their enemy. It's the only time this is addressed, and I wish the anime writers went further with it. In the prior episodes, did they ever consider extending an invitation to him? More of that wasted potential, as I alluded in their first episode.

Makes you wonder how Ash'd look in a Rocket Grunt uniform. Shifty eyes.

This episode was very good.

It is, but care to explain why?

I forgot to mention this, but didn't Seymour's/Rikao's glowing glasses remind you of Professor Tomoe from the Sailor Moon anime? Of course, Moon was ending at 97, while the anime was just starting, so that could be it.

If anyone wants to do a picture to picture comparison for me, that would be nice.
