At my high school, Pokemon has been taken to an underground level, as is the case with many places. I'm a big Pokémon fan, and a lot of people know so, but what I thought was odd was that next to nobody, save for a few people, actually hassle me about the whole subject. I wear a Latios keychain on my lanyard, and everybody who stops to take a look at it gets a smile on their face and says something along the lines of "Dude! That is freaking sweet! I want one!"

This led me to thinking, even though most people who grew up with the game and anime in the first and second generation are now in high school and college and consider Pokémon to be shunned, do they still harbor some sort of an attachment to it? A lot of people at my high school receive detentions for playing with Game Boys and DSs in class, and what games are they most frequently playing? Pokémon! Therefore, I think that people who grew up with the game in the first and second generation still enjoy it, but are afraid of being insulted by the few who started the idea of Pokémon being outdated and dumb. After all, nobody likes being talked down upon.

    What do you think?

I was a late bloomer (Gen III), but I always looked at my cousin's Pokemon Silver with awe and jealousy... but oh no, my parents wouldn't buy me a Colour :(. So when I finally got Ruby, I was so happy, and told all my friends, and was then shunned. But now, I talk to a lot of people, and they're all, "Oh, you had Ruby! That's an awesome first choice. I remember when I got LeafGreen, it was so 'ZOMG Wireless Adapter!!'." etc etc. It is secret, though. Nobody ever announces their catching of that elusive Latios in public, do they? And a LOT of people have got DPPt, I notice.

Yeah that happens a lot around me. I only recently found out that about 5 people who were actually people I would have thought to put people down for liking Pokemon are actually vivid fans themselves.
I am a bit underground myself when I am at school or in public, but around family or friends who like Pokemon, I am as open as a 24 hours McDonalds!

I guess I'm an underground Pokemon fan. XD I remember this kid I barely even know randomly came to my house one day and saw Pokemon Diamond on the side, and was like "woah, you've got Diamond too!" I was kinda confused cos he's like one of the most popular kids in our year. O_O The next day he bought his Diamond version around which was full of Lv. 100's. I was kinda shocked that other people were playing these games - especially 'popular' kids! :P

I'm not a "closet" fan. I wouldn't bring it up in conversation, but I occasionally play DS in the playground, and people ask what I'm playing, and are like oh, pokemon, cool. However pokemon, the DS and the younger grades do get a lot of jokes at assemblys and stuff :D.

I guess I'm a "closet" fan. No one at school likes Pokemon, and some people that do are made fun of, and I'm shy anyways.

Pkmn is not an underground thing at my HS, but I am a closer Agenr Zero due to...well, I can't have stereotypes throwing me off'a some of my podiums.
There are, however, varying types of fans. There are likely a few like me...there are some ultra-nerdy ones who blab about the most mundane subjects (Ponyta needs an alt that is a pegasus ~_~...it had a poor name, too). Then there are others who sing the theme songs, write on the board when the next Team magma meeting is, and tell me that Togetic has a new evo (as if I didn't know <<). It's cool to know your pkmn. There's, in fact, only one single demographic that openly detests this love for pkmn that most of us have, and I'm not going to say because someone will take offense (PM if you HAD to know)...

I sort of let a lot of people know im a fan my friends know and their not very big fans themselvs the only other fans I know are my Brother and my friend I hang out with on my street he also goes to my school but he is in a higher grade than me so Idont see him at school much

i agree completely. its similar at my school accept at my school for some reason the "nerds" if you will really rule the school and i like it but everyone has some connection to pokemon. me and my friend have discussions about strategies and episodes all the time.

Nope, I'm public. I draw them and put them on my binder. I have a Jigglypuff wrist band, a Charmander shirt, and plenty of plushies. I get hassled-- a lot. And I jump people when they say any Pokemon jokes. I have a few friends that still play, and a few that play because I brought some memories back for them, but for the most part, people are arses and make fun of me. I've grown up getting made fun of for something, so it really doesn't bother me.

Oh, and I carry around a copy of "The Best of Yellow" in my purse. Let them complain all they want. I choose what to wear and what to read. They can eat it. :D

Edit: Also, I was at Spencer's in the mall once and someone from my old school saw me and asked me what to do at a certain point in Emerald. That just shows the legacy I had at my old school as "the Pokemon girl" still lives on.

I have no need to hide my obsession with Pokémon. People in my school either love it or they don't. There are no "jocks, "preps", or "cool group" to pick on or beat up those who do. The closest thing we've got to those are the dancers and some stuck up jerks for actors. Otherwise, most people are cool with us. I go to an uber geeky school.

Well I have been playing Pokemon since R/B/Y
I would say I don't care if people shun me...
Because the same is done for everything...
There is always someone who thinks childish of you..
    It's life..
    Harshly put, but true...

    Ima hidin.

I'm the biggest "closet fan" there is. Not just about Pokémon. It's like I've got to lives. One is in real life, with friends and parties and school and work and anything you can come up with. The other one is with online friends, fanfiction, anime and manga, games, mainly starting for real when I joined PC, and realized there were other people like me around the world. Is that sad? I don't know. I feel good with it. I think. Though it's a bit confuzzling sometimes.

As for Pokémon, I like it as a phenomena, not necessarily the games at all times. And that's what's "worse" in shunners' eyes than just playing the games just because they're great games.

When I was very young, I used to eat, drink and breathe Pokémon.
But I changed Primary schools when I was nine, no one liked Pokémon (and being trapped in a class of 8) and shunned my interest in Pokémon (they discovered I watched the anime religously), so I used to lie and hide every trace of Pokémon from my house for 5 years. It was horrible. They wondered why I got no Christmas presents (all Pokémon gifts of course ^^).
Everything, from fan-art to my precious GBA SP to my dolls I hid. I only had two out of school friends who liked the games.
Last year, I brought Pokémon Diamond the week it came out and used to play it secretly. I soon learned all my friends at purchased the game too. =D I was overjoyed, and encouraged more of them to play. Me and one of my best friends would be spend of French class making our tag team.
I was the amazing expert, and was proud. I knew everything there was to know! ^^
Unfortunally, the hub-bub died down onto other, bleaker interests. But I still love my Diamond version, and I'm happy that my friends have Pokémon too!
I know how it feels to lie about liking Pokémon, though. My primary school friends never liked Pokémon. *shuns 'em* XD

Dude, I love you guys so much for this thread.

If they knew I liked Pokémon they would laugh at me!
But my brother knows I like playing the games but he doesn't care how I am a big fan.
No one knows that I play people online using shoddy and even that I am a member of and visit The PokéCommunity nearly everyday.

For me, it's not that it's really a closet hobby of mine so much as it just doesn't come up.

I don't care if anyone finds out I still play the games or anything, since it's not really something I feel ashamed of, and I know my friends aren't petty enough to make fun of me for it. If the subject comes up, I'm more than happy to discuss it. It almost never does, but that's okay with me too.

As far as I'm concerned, anyone who can't deal with the fact that I like something that they think is stupid doesn't need to be my friend anyway.

might have to challenge you for that title :P

Like, no-one knows even slightly that I like pogeymanz, mainly because I keep it so desperately secret that I only go on PC on my laptop when I'm in a room on my own. Then, if someone borrows my laptop, I start fretting that they're going to find a trainer card stored on the hard-drive or somehting. >.< in fact, I got so worried about this, that I made a hidden folder where I keep all my pokemon files and bits. its called the very inconspicuous 'stuff'
