I think it's just for cameo purposes, much like Jasmine was a Cameo in Sunnyshore in DPPt. I don't believe there's any true reason behind it other than to give you nostalgia and want to play those games again.

I really don't think that they are in the games only for cameos. They all are serving some important roles as already mentioned above by everybody else.
